Miss Mechanic by Emma Hart is my second book by Hart that I’ve read. What I enjoy and what had me picking up this book is that she puts women in a role that is consider a man’s job. I like seeing the reversal and having women working in jobs that aren’t normal.
Now, I’ve got mixed feelings on Miss Mechanic. It’s got sexism, sexual harassment, and dubious consent, but it’s also got some things I enjoyed and so, I feel conflicted.
Jamie and Dex don’t hit it off. They hate each other for no other reason then gender. He doesn’t think a women can do a man’s job and so, they are at each other’s throats through the whole book. They snipe. They bicker. They verbally spare. It’s like for-play for them. Dex constantly says sexually explicit things to Jamie or demean her gender, but Jamie does the same and gives as good as she gets.
I’ll say I liked that Jamie gave back, but I’m also conflicted on what came out of Dex’s mouth when these two did spare. I like that Jamie’s a mechanic and that she has a passion for it. She won’t let anyone crush this passion and drive to be the best. As for Dex he’s a hot mechanic, but he’s a sexist.
I want to also mention their first sex scene: When they do get together the sex is safe sex. I do need to state that I think the author forgot that they used a condom. Why, I say this is; because at the end of the scene Jamie mentions she needs to clean up, but what does she need to clean, unless the condom broke. This whole scene was either a set up for a surprise later or the author forgot. After finishing the book I think Hart forgot. Though I was not thrilled about where they had sex, how it came about, and the end of the scene.
Miss Mechanic left me feeling conflicted. With what’s going on with sexual harassment in the world, this book may not be right.

If you like a little snark in your stories, OK…a lot of snark, Emma Hart is the author for you! I’ve read some of the reviews that feel this is a sexist book with all sorts of politically incorrect stuff going on. I think they’re taking their literature too seriously. Miss Mechanic isn’t great literature. That’s not a put-down, not all books are written for the sake of achieving lasting greatness and making a mark in the world of literature. That’s OK. In fact, most books are written for pure entertainment. They are not written to make a historical statement, solve third world crises, or to philosophically enlighten generations. Nope. Some are meant for just pure fun, entertainment, and brain candy.
Miss Mechanic is one of those fun, entertaining, pure brain candy kinda reads. The two main characters thrive on stubbornness and sarcasm, fight like cats and dogs, and eventually fall for one another just as hard as they fight. It’s got laugh-out-loud one-liners and plenty of awkward scenes. It’s just pure fun.
I wanted to like this story because it sounded so promising but it just wasn’t. The story very quickly gets bogged down with unnecessary minute. The dialog is juvenile and got old fast along with the continuous over-use of the F-word. It seriously needs editing.
“Bullshit,” she whispered. “Banana-split.” I grimaced. Bullshit. Banana-split. Awesome. Now my sister was teaching my niece how to politely call me on it. “Gotcha.” “See? She doesn’t take you banana-split. I like that in a woman.”
So, Charley absolutely steals the show! She’s adorable, quick-witted, and super intelligent. Not to mention, she totally calls out Dex on all his banana-split!
Jamie is an amazing mechanic who is never given a chance just based on her gender. When she applies for a job, she is given the chance because her name doesn’t scream “female!” When faced with Dex, she is immediately bristled. “I couldn’t tell if he was impressed or pissed at my mouth. And I didn’t care. If Dex Ryne was going to come into my town and run his mouth at me, I was going to teach him a thing or two about small-town, Southern girls. I was sweet as pie. Until you pissed me off. Then…Well, then, I’d shut you down quicker than a hooker shut down a guy after a free blowie.” This girl is super independent and has one of the strongest backbones, ever! Not only that…she also has a really big heart.
Dex gives on some sexist, jerk-face vibes, but there’s really a lot more to him that takes a while to bring out. He truly cares for his family, and wow are they a hoot! Even with a loving family, Dex has some pretty archaic viewpoints that he doesn’t mind sharing. He takes one glance at Jamie and thinks he knows everything about her, but he quickly finds out there’s much more to her than meets the eye. And once he sees all that is Jamie, he quickly finds himself intrigued. “Then again, today had shown me a whole other side of the woman I thought I knew. And hell, she was sexy as fuck. Adorable. Cute. Sexy. Fuck. My sister was right. I liked her. I liked her a whole damn lot. Motherfucker.”
This was another fantastic romantic comedy that flips gender roles on their heads. I loved seeing Jamie steam roll through any doubts that she was a capable mechanic, along with being a woman. Dex, although begins being a doubter, truly sees that Jamie is skilled regardless of her gender. Also, that family of his — wowza! A great story to laugh with and leave you with a full heart.
My goodness!! I knew I would love this book but kept putting off reading because I knew I would read it too fast!!
Jamie is something else!! I laughed so much during this book my husband was concerned for me. I could feel the pain she had when no one took her seriously as a mechanic. The push and pull with Dexter was intense at times and so so hot! I couldn’t wait for her to prove Dexter wrong! I wanted Dex to eat so many of his words!! But I also loved his tenderness to her at times! He also has the most hilarious family!!
I couldn’t put this down!! I loved this book so much and I’m hoping she has so much more for me to dive into like this one!!

I am so in love with this book. Right from the very start it had me hooked. The attitude and smart ass comments between Jamie and Dex from their first meeting were hilarious, and the fact that they start off enemies was awesome because thats a favourite trope of mine.
Jamies inner dialogue is hilarious, she is extremely sassy – “Since opinions were usually closer to assholes than anything else, I didn’t care what he thought”.
I was literally laughing out loud constantly at this book, it’s that funny. I sped through this and I really loved both main characters. The way they connect with each other and the way they work off each other with their hilarious arguments and banter is just awesome.
Jamie is a really strong female character, and I really connect with the fact that she does whats considered a mans job. She’s so determined to do what she loves and she doesn’t apologise for it. I totally loved her as the heroine in this.
Throw in Jamie’s meddling Mum, cool Dad, and then Dex’s meddling Granddad, Great Aunt and Sister, oh and don’t forget his adorable niece, and this adds up to some hilarious secondary characters, all of which I really liked.
I would love for Dex’s sister to get her own book too by the way. Please and thank you Emma.
I highly recommend this book, I couldn’t stop laughing throughout, it was well written and the storyline flows really well.
High five Emma Hart, high five. Can’t wait for more from you!
Miss Mechanic is a standalone comedy romance by the ever-talented Emma Hart. I have read her sexy as sin books and her hilarious as fuck books and have loved every word. Her female characters are strong, intelligent, and beautiful. I loved Miss Fix It, having the female in a role (builder) that you don’t see many woman in was badass. Now, it’s time to for a mechanic to show how she can do anything a man can do…and do it better.
Jamie needed a job. Dex needed a mechanic. She grew up in the shop. His Grandfather was the new owner and Dex was in charge. He didn’t want a woman in the back under a hood. He wanted one in the front answering the phones. He has seen a few woman mechanics but they didn’t look like the woman who just came in looking like she going out on the town. There was no way she had the skills she so arrogantly insisted she had. But, if she wanted to prove him wrong, then she would have to work for it.
Three weeks. Jamie had three weeks to prove that this arrogant asshole was wrong. That she not only belonged under a hood but that she would kick his ass every which way to Sunday. She wasn’t going to break. Especially for this asshole. Even if he was hot as fuck and made her want to throw him on top of a hood of a car. He drove her crazy. One minute she wanted to junk punch him and the next she wanted to kiss him. Fuck him. She had a job to do and nothing was getting in her way even her libido. But if she could have both? She hated him for what he said but his other sides are different. Men.
Dex hated her. Hated the way she wore her jean shorts. Hated the way she sassed him. Hated the way she kicked his ass on a daily basis with her words. Hated that his sister and niece thought she had his number. Hated it and damn if he wanted to kiss her for it.
Dex and Jamie’s relationship is maddening, hilarious, and sexy. Omg! These two. They can go all day. Fighting was their foreplay and it was dangerous and so damn hot. You are going to love these three weeks with these two! I know I did.
Overall…it’s another kickass comedy by Emma Hart. It’s no hearts and flowers romance. It’s a taco and sarcasm filled romance. Sometimes I just need exactly that. A good laugh. Fun atmosphere. Strong characters. Inappropriate elders. And smartass kids. This was that book.
Quotes:
“I like her.”
“Of course you do,” I replied.
“She doesn’t take any of your banana-split.”
“My eyes are up here, Romeo.”
“I know, but your legs are down here, darlin’.”
“You’re always on my nerves, Dex. You’re practically a medical condition at this point.”
This one was just pure fun. Enemies to lovers and this one was filled with lots of snark and over the hood action. Jamie needs a job and it just so happens the ad she answers is for a job at her Dad’s old garage. The only problem is when she shows up for the interview the owner, Dexter, takes one look at her and decides because she is a woman she cannot do the job. Mistake number one. She bets him she can do everything he requires over the next month or he can fire her and they are off and running. Definitely not to miss this one. It is a quick read or listen!
The banter between the couple in this book was witty but mostly antagonistic. It was a fun, easy read but I can’t say I enjoyed the hero and heroine’s personalities all that much. She was a little too snarky and he tended to be too arrogant and, with regards to her, too chauvinistic.

Review:
I really enjoyed this book. It’s right in Emma Hart’s ally. There’s a ton of banter and sass in this book. It has a strong female and equally strong, hot, male.
Somethings in this book where a bit over the top, like Dexters family. I wouldn’t like it if my family does what they do to Dexter but that’s me.
At som point the constant fighting became a bit to much but luckily it changed a bit after that. There was still fighting and banter but it became more than that.
What is this book about:
This book is about Jamie and Dexter (or Dex), both of them are mechanics. Dex owns the auto shop that used to belong to Jamie’s dad and where she used to work. Jamie is in need of a job and after some hesitation she decides to apply for the mechanic job at her fathers old shop. What she didn’t realize is that she would come to hate the new owner. She negotiated her way into the job and now has to prove herself. She would do anything to prove the misogynistic ass that woman can be great mechanics to.
She didn’t expect it to be so hard to not want him, to keep hating him. And while he believes that she is a good mechanic, he doens’t want someone in his shop that challenges his every word, his every action with banter and sarcasm. He also doesn’t want someone working for him that he wants as badly as he does Jamie.
Will Jamie be able to prove her worth and keep a job or will she walk away at the end of her deadline and lose it all.
What did I like about this book:
I liked the banter between the characters, but like I mentioned above it became a bit much at some point.
I really liked that Jamie and Dex have great chemistry, they can deny it all they want but it’s there and they’d cave sooner or later.
I liked that Jamie held her own in a male dominated work field. It shows how strong and resilient she is.
Overall it’s a great, funny read.

This was a fast paced romance that held hilarity and emotion.
Things happen that confuse Jamie and Dex, making them both question if their bet isn’t something more. I loved the banter between these two, and it goes to show their is a very fine line between hate and lust/love.
I would definitely recommend this HEA.
I enjoy Emma Hart immensely and enjoyed this book though I didn’t connect with these characters as deeply as I have with others she’s created. It was an original plot and an easy read. I finished it in a couple of days. I will definitely keep reading Ms Hart.
good book
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Jamie is a sassy, snarky woman who has worked hard to find her way in a man’s profession. Dex runs the garage that used to belong to Jamie’s dad, for his grandfather. He is completely sexist and doesn’t think that any woman can be a better mechanic than a man. I love the banter between these two and for those that complained about the sexism in the book – it’s a book, fiction, and reading how Jamie is schooling Dex is very entertaining. Which is exactly what a book should be, entertaining. Jamie and Dex’s chemistry is hot and it was fun watching their relationship unfold.
They hated each other at first but then ended up together in the end. Good banter between the characters. Lacked a relationship build and the internal dialogue got old.
I loved this book. It was a great book to read.
Enjoyed this one!
Cute story.
Very sweet. Loved them together.
Great book!
