Misfortune of Song (Druid’s Brooch #5) by Christy Nicholas
Stars:4
The brooch is in another family member’s possession and another story to tell. Like the previous story, I loved the family love that is Maelan has for his granddaughter, Orlagh. His love for her leads him to make some questionable choices. In this story, there is love, magic, and action throughout. At times, I did find it hard to stay focused and the story’s flow was a bit slow. However, the story did pick back up.
Misfortune of Song is the fifth book in the Druid’s Brooch Series by Christy Nicholas. This story can be a stand-alone book, but in my humble opinion I would read the other books as well. This book has all kinds of mystical properties. Misfortune of Song is one that brings a grandfather, Maelan to make an important choice for Orlargh. It this struggle that makes this story so good. Orlagh does not like make black or white decisions and tends to live in the gray area. There is a real struggle for Maelan because he wants to save her from some heart aches. Will Orlagh take her grandfather advise or will she take the other road?
MISFORTUNE OF SONG is the fifth book in the Druid’s Brooch Series but it can absolutely be read as a stand-alone.
This is a complex tale with many characters, situations and emotions throughout the story. As with the other stories in this series, the author has a way of painting the landscape with her words so that I was able to visualize the story as it played out.
This is an epic tale that spans many situations, relationships and battles. It is light vs dark and good vs evil but in a different way than expected. Based on what I read, I can understand how Faeries went from being nasty to being the super cute things they are today.
This is a fantastic series that I think everyone could find enjoyment in.

Misfortune of Song is the fifth book in the Druids Brooch series. This is another wonderful series that I feel many people will enjoy. Each of the books on this series can be easily read as standalone. This book is no different to the other books in the series, it is well written, and you will get to know the characters easy. You will find that this book moves at a good pace and the storyline flows perfectly. I do think that as the series carries on the characters in the books just keep getting better. Do you enjoy reading historical fiction books or fantasy books? If you answered yes, then you need to get your hands on this series.
Misfortune of Song: Druid’s Brooch Series: #5 by Christy Nicholas
Four Stars
I dislike parents that don’t know when to let their children go. To let them live and make their own mistakes. Tell them about the dangers in the world but let them choose the path. This story was really long winded. I say that because it took a lot of words to get the point and message across. Orlagh was a brat. I can’t believe she was “in love” after so little time. Then to do what she did to her grandfather! OMG! She made my brain hurt. But I do give her props for sticking to her faith that it was love and that she finding herself. It’s hard to put yourself into the mind of any person in the time that this book was set. To think that you only have so many choices of what you can do or become. Overall I enjoyed the magical and mystical parts of this story the most. I’ve always felt that there is more around us than we can see.
I give Misfortune of Song: Druid’s Brooch Series: #5 by Christy Nicholas, 5 stars.
It is the 12th century in what will be known as Ireland. Maelan is the warcheif for his clan. He is also in charge of his unruly granddaughter, Orlagh. He takes his position very seriously, but he also wants to be the best grandfather and protector he can be. Unfortunately, Orlagh is very strong minded and does not always do what Maelan thinks is right. When she decides to pursue what she believes is her one true love, he tries to put a stop to it. But she will not listen. Now he has to choose between his clan and his only living family. This will put him on an epic adventure where he will put his beliefs to the test, encounter the Fae, and test this old man’s love and endurance. Can he save Orlagh? Does she really need saving?
This was a perfect read for St Patrick’s Day. A historical fiction/fantasy set in older Ireland, this book interested me immediately. I have read previous books in this series and once again this story was exceptional. I am constantly amazed at how each book in this series can be so different from each other, but yet they all tie together flawlessly. The stories of both Maelan and Orlagh are so good. You can understand where each one comes from and why they make the decisions they do. The other characters are also done so well and I would love to see more of them in other books. The story itself has so much going on that there is not one boring moment. Not to mention a few surprises along the way.
If you are a fan of well written historical fiction, fantasy, and/or fiction set in Ireland, this book and series is for you.
This series is so rich, so detailed – I jump into these pages and gladly walk with the characters while on these fantastic journeys of fantasy. Although the fifth of the series, this book is written so as to stand well on its own. The characters are complex, relatable, vulnerable. The plot moves steadily and is filled with a wonderful pace that keeps the reader fully engaged. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
With cross generational clashes, Fae, and a plot you could get whiplash from, Christy Nicholas has added another winner to the Druid’s Brooch series. I hadn’t read a book from this series in a while and after I finished this one, now I want to go back and read the others all over again.
I am in love with all things Celtic so the traditional names, places, and mythology draw me in from the get go. However, people who aren’t as well versed will still find this story and the rest of the series to be in a fantastic world that will draw you in like quicksand.
Maelan’s confliction over letting his granddaughter, Orlagh, live her own life and make her own choices is a subject that every parent/grandparent will struggle with and how Christy expertly blends it into 12th century Ireland was my absolute favorite part of the plot line. The fights with the Fae are fantastic, don’t get me wrong. But the teenage struggles for independence and personal autonomy have always been fascinating to me and I love seeing it in this light and time period.
The fifth installment in the Druid’s Brooch series can easily be read as a standalone but I highly recommend the series.
This is the fifth book in this series, it is just as enjoyable as the previous books in this series. In this book, Maelan is faced with making a choice with his granddaughter, Orlargh. What will happen when she falls for Timurir? Will she rebell and what are the bargains Orlargh must make to save her? These are great characters that keep the story engaging and come to life for me. I also enjoy the Fae, they are creative and bring twists to the story. I highly recommend this book.
Misfortune of Song by Christy Nicholas is the fifth book in the Druids Brooch series. Each book can be read as a stand-alone.
As with the previous books this one is well written and captivating. The characters and the story just seem to come to life as you are reading about them. It was easy to picture yourself in the setting the author created.
The pace of the book was perfect, it flowed well from start to finish. Another book I have thoroughly enjoyed by this author.
Misfortune of Song is the fifth book in the Druid’s Brooch series. It can be read as a standalone.
The author has done a superb job of weaving an enchanting story. The characters come alive on the pages and the plot sucks you in. I loved the strength and sassiness of the main character, Orlagh, even though she does show her youth by making some rash decisions. There are many twists and turns to the story and everything may not be as it seems.
Misfortune of Song is a great tale of young love, heartbreak, betrayal, magic, and adventure.
I found the layers of the story and the attention to detail the most compelling. The characters feel real, the pace is slow and careful. This is definitely a book to read if you like magical realism, historical settings, and the slight feel of mystery intertwined with fate. I wonder where the brooch went before and feel curious to read the other books to find out. This is a definite read for those who like historical fiction mixed with a little supernatural.
This is such a wonderful series, this book is a great addition. The story is a blend of history and Celtic mythology. The story had me laughing and crying. This book can be read as a stand-alone but might be enjoyed more if you read the series in order.
