I can’t believe I continued after the first page. I’m such a snob with books written in third person. This one luckily made it. I’m so happy for sticking it out because this story was heart warming and beautiful.
I had to look up slang words and such, being an American and all. England the setting and the author didn’t back down, if you wanted to know what the heck a fag was, better Google it. But I found that to be fun and interesting along with such an unconventional, unique pairing. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book where one of the main characters has Tourette’s Syndrome. It was another learning experience. Jake’s ticks were one of things I loved most about this book. I don’t want to sound foolish, but I laughed way more than it should be appropriate. But you’ll get it when you read it.
This was a different take on a love triangle, when I think of a triangle, my chest gets tight, knowing the angst is going to have me biting my nails. This is not that type. Jake, Tom, and Cam vibe in perfect harmony, tugging at your heart strings right along with your emotions.
I absolutely loved everything about this book!
I highly recommend to readers who love M/M and out of the box romances. I’ll definitely check out this author’s other books.
I never thought I’d read an open relationship story that I’d enjoy. But this special book managed to do just that. This was my first book by Garrett Leigh and it definitely will not be my last.
Tom and Cass’s arrangement has worked for them for years because of their honesty and you could tell by the way they talked about others that they truly only loved each other. That is, until Jake came along.
Jake caught Tom’s eye right away and you could tell there was something special between the two of them. Tom’s need to fix people worked out in all of their favor, giving Jake a place to grow, Tom someone else to love and fix and Cass someone who understands his troubled past. Tom and Cass’s exchange about Cass coming home to Jake in their bed the first time was the sweetest. Knowing Cass also felt the pull to Jake from that moment made all of the events that happened after that even better, especially the text conversations between the two of them.
Loved how Jake’s Tourette’s Syndrome was handled in this book. Even how Tom and Cass approached it-so different and really telling of their character (Tom just accepting it and moving on and Cass questioning it and making jokes when appropriate). But I loved that their concern for Jake’s well-being brought them all together.
I have to say I hated that Cass felt like he couldn’t talk about his past with either of them and that he essentially ran away from them. It felt a little out of character since he was so honest with Tom about everything and Jake clearly didn’t have an easy childhood. But, I did really like that it was Jake who ultimately led Tom to Cass again.
This book was refreshing because, while it easily could have focused on the sexual side of their relationships, it told the story of the three of them growing together with the physical part of their relationship woven in. Reading about them bonding while living under the same roof and learning more about each other was really special.
In the end, I loved that Misfits came together and was truly a physical representation of how beautiful the three of them could be (and would be) together, doing the things that they love most.
Tom owns a thriving restaurant business, and is out scouting for a new location. Avoiding traffic, he eats at a nearby restaurant, figuring he can check out the local competition at the same time. Jake is his waiter and grabs Tom’s attention by giving his honestly poor opinion of the food available. Later, Tom witnesses Jake have an incident where he drops plates and food and gets sent out back.
After Tom leaves and goes to a nearby pub, Jake finds him, returning a diary he left behind and admitting that he’s been fired. Jake suffers from Tourettes, and it’s not easy to be a waiter when your body moves without your permission. Tom is intrigued, and the two end up back at Tom’s house, in Tom’s bed.
Tom leaves early the next morning, leaving a note behind for Jake. Except when Jake wakes up, Tom’s boyfriend Cass is there. Jake freaks, thinking he’s in big trouble with the boyfriend. But the truth is that Tom and Cass have an open relationship. Tom can’t stop thinking about Jake, and vice versa. But Cass has to come first. Is it possible that the three of them can make something work?
Jake was a fascinating character. It wasn’t just his Tourettes, but also how he dealt with it, his humour, his embarrassment, his hilariously inappropriate comments…
I found Cass to be an intriguing character too. His lower class upbringing, his secrets, and perhaps even the fact that story is never told from his perspective, only from Jake and Tom’s.
Tom was the least interesting of the three characters for me, but it was very clear how much Jake and Cass loved him, and why.
This book, and the characters, had a lot of depth. It wasn’t just a simple ‘guy meets guy, falls in love, lives happily ever after’. The triangle complicated things, but it was more than that. Cass in particular had a lot of issues to work through before he could commit to the relationship. I felt that although Jake and Tom had fallen into bed really quickly, the overall relationship between the three of them, and the true commitment to each other, proceeded at a much more realistic pace. It was not instalove.
I thoroughly enjoyed it, and the second book (and currently only other) book in the series. I recommend them to anyone who enjoys m/m romance.
Cass and Tom start with an open relationship, so there is no ‘cheating’ as such. No lying or hiding anything, so if cheating is something that puts you off, there’s none of that in this book.
Out of all of Garrett’s books this one is hands down my favorite. And I adore all of her stories. Cass, Jake, and Tom have my heart.
