The #1 national bestseller about a famous novelist held hostage by his “number one fan” and suffering a frightening case of writer’s block—that could prove fatal. One of “Stephen King’s best…genuinely scary” (USA TODAY). Paul Sheldon is a bestselling novelist who has finally met his number one fan. Her name is Annie Wilkes, and she is more than a rabid reader—she is Paul’s nurse, tending his … nurse, tending his shattered body after an automobile accident. But she is also furious that the author has killed off her favorite character in his latest book. Annie becomes his captor, keeping him prisoner in her isolated house.
Annie wants Paul to write a book that brings Misery back to life—just for her. She has a lot of ways to spur him on. One is a needle. Another is an axe. And if they don’t work, she can get really nasty.
“Terrifying” (San Francisco Chronicle), “dazzlingly well-written” (The Indianapolis Star), and “truly gripping” (Publishers Weekly), Misery is “classic Stephen King…full of twists and turns and mounting suspense” (The Boston Globe).

If you only read one Stephen King book let it be “Misery”, you will not regret it.
There were parts that made me want to vomit it was so graphic. I loved it.
This book terrified me. First time I went to the Stanley hotel, I kept expecting to see the twin girls…
This is an incredible story of a writer and his biggest fan who is disappointed in his
latest novel’s direction and takes it upon herself to change his mind about killing off her favorite character by holding him hostage (after rescuing him from a car wreck) and basically torturing him to get him to write what she wants him to say. Scary and unsettling, but quite a ride.
As typical of Stephen King, this could happen.
Great book
Loved the book, the movie was all that and some!!
The book, as usual, is so much better than any cinematic production! Oh, how I loved the way Stephen King drew me into the Mist and all the people who became better — or in many cases, worse — by the unseen terror confronting them.
My favorite
great suspense.
I loved this book. And loved the movie. Stephen King is everything.
One of my favorites.
An absolutely phenomenal book that completely absorbs the reader in it pages. Both the novels victim, best selling author Paul Sheldon, and our truly horrifying villain, psycho fan Annie Wilkes, evoke intense feeling of hate and sympathy with every decision they make. The truly tragic and twisted story of Annie Wilkes makes the unpredictability of her actions even more intense and the beautiful description of the pain Paul Sheldon goes through while in her, I hesitate to say ‘care’, grips the reader like nothing I have ever read.
Great book. Netter than the movie.
F YOU HAVEN’T READ THIS BOOK GIVE IT A TRY. VERY ENTERTAINING !!
As an avid reader of Stephen King, I found this book especially frightening as it was all within the realm of possibility.
If you have seen the movie the book is a whole lot more scary. the scene that people remember is much worse to read about.
This is my second favorite Stephen King book.
Could not put this book down. Read it in one day!
