MISADVENTURES ARE STANDALONE ROMANCES THAT CAN BE READ IN ANY ORDERWinning has always come naturally for stud ice hockey defenseman Gus “the Bus” Persson. On the ice or off, he’s never had any trouble scoring, racking up goals—and girls. As the best player in his rookie class and the number-one draft pick of the Malibu Suns, he’s taking his game to the next level and is justifiably full of … level and is justifiably full of swagger.
So why does one of the Suns’ ice girls treat him like he’s invisible?
Bo St. James doesn’t have time for rookie hotshots who think their gloves don’t stink. She knows them, she works with them, she trains them. It doesn’t matter that Gus Persson is the hottest newbie she’s ever seen. She knows his type. She’s got big plans of her own, and she’s not going to let some cocky rich kid athlete keep her from her goals.
But there’s a chemistry between them they cannot deny. A lust that burns so hot, it threatens to melt the very ice on which they make their livings. The game has changed for both of them. Together, can these two play to win?

I’m sure I have said this before, but it’s worth repeating: The Misadventures series is way too much fun. Each standalone story delivers sexy entertainment that I have no desire to quit. The newest release introduces us to Gus, a cocky rookie hockey player who is hoping to make it pro and he has the attitude and stagger to go with his talent and lofty goals. I don’t read too many sport romances, but I always enjoy a cocky sports star who is perplexed by the confident woman who barely shows them the time of day. Bo has neither the time or inclination to deal with hotshot rookies. She knows the type and they just stand in the way of her goals. She plans to have nothing to do with Gus, but their chemistry is pretty hard to ignore. Once they give into their lust, do their big dreams leave room for each other and the attraction they can’t deny?
I am a huge fan of Toni Aleo and when I hear ‘hockey’ and ‘book’ in a sentence, she is the first person that comes to my mind. Assassins and Bellevue Bullies are my favorite book series of all time 🙂 I don’t even remember how many times I read these books. For example, I was feeling down and didn’t want to read much lately and what did I do, start reading Assassins again. For me it is a cure to my readers block LOL! So back to Toni Aleo’s new release ‘Misadventures with a Rookie’.
Bocephus, a.k.a Bo, Saint James is a studying to become physical therapist. She is independent, smart and strong. In order to support herself she teaches ice skating classes and also an ice girl for Malibu Suns. Gus ‘the Bus’ Persson is rookie defenseman for the Malibu Suns and he is one of the best in the league. He is ready to start playing for NHL and he knows that day is coming. He is hot, cocky, and loud. When it comes to women, his motto is ‘one and done’ and he never has a problem finding one. However, when certain red head keeps rejecting him, he cannot resist pursuing her. Their chemistry is off the charts and everyone around them can feel their attraction to one another. And their banter will crack you up 🙂 When you start learning more about their back-stories you will realize that looks can be deceiving. Bo seems strong and settled but her insecurities and broken heart will cause her to second guess everything. Will her past cause her to give up one of the best things in her life or will she come over her insecurities and get her happily ever after? That is for you to figure out.
As always Toni Aleo did her magic and ta-da you have an amazing book that you can read in one sitting. ‘Misadventures with a Rookie’ is funny, sweet and emotional story that you won’t want to miss out. The only disappointing thing about this book is, it is a standalone and I wanted to read more about Bo and Gus. I hope there is at least a novella following the book.
Would I recommend this book: Yes.
Would I re-read this book: Yes.
Would I read future books by this author: Yes.
Toni Aleo and hockey stories go hand in hand! I love Gus’ cocky determination to break through the thick walls of protection that Bo has surrounded herself with. He does it thinking this will be a one time thing, but her Sassy attitude is a challenge and Gus likes a challenge! However, they both have built up walls and putting your heart on the line risks having it broken or it can lead to love. They both have to figure out if it is worth the risk.
Great book!!! Another steamy must read Misadventure!!
The Misadventures series is such a great collection of stories by different authors. I’ve enjoyed every one of the books that I have read (and I’ve read all of them to date) and none of the books have disappointed.
Misadventures with a Rookie is a romance between a rookie professional hockey player, Gus “The Bus” Persson and an ice girl who is working towards her sports therapy degree, Bo St. James! Gus is very popular with the ladies and he has his sight set on Bo. Bo has been burned by the same type of person as Gus so she isn’t falling for his flirting. Bo is actually hostile towards Gus and Gus has to figure out why since he has never done anything to her. The love/hate relationship between Gus and Bo is hilarious especially when both of them continue to end up in the ER for injuries that no one would believe! Gus is so easy going and wants to get to know Bo better since he senses that she is someone he wants to know more than a one night stand. Bo is attracted to Gus and it frustrates her because she doesn’t want to get hurt again. But Bo starts to realize that Gus isn’t the type of person that she thought he was so she hesitantly gives him a chance. However, when Bo’s past comes up, she isn’t sure if she work through it with Gus. Gus was surprised at first but then realizes that he still wants a relationship with Bo.
The interactions between Bo and Gus (and him making fun of her name) and Gus and his parents are hilarious and makes you wish you had that kind of relationship with your parents and significant other. The romance between Bo and Gus is funny and sweet and entertaining! What a great story!

Mary Jo –
A cute read with a little hockey thrown in. It’s not hockey heavy as most of Ms. Aleo’s books usually are, but it’s well worth the afternoon of reading.
Both Gus and Bo are well developed characters and easy to relate to. The obstacles in their path are not insurmountable, but it does take time and effort to make sure both parties are on the same path.
Reviewers on the Wicked Reads Review Team were provided a free copy of Misadventures with a Rookie (Misadventures #11) by Toni Aleo to read and review for this tour.
Self-assured Gus has never met anyone like Bo, someone who is seemingly averse to his looks and charms. This chick magnet is gorgeous and very talented on the ice.
After picking herself up from a world of hurt, all Bo wants is to graduate and move on with her life. She insulates herself from men like Gus, in fact, from anyone who tries to get close to her, including her roommate, Lizzy.
It would be inaccurate to describe Gus and Bo’s relationship as love-hate because Gus does not hate Bo. It is almost comedic the way he tries to get her attention at times and make her feel relevant. The angst level is quite low, most of it comes from barriers Bo built around her heart and the relationship she has with her mother.
I love the camaraderie Gus has with his parents, they are easygoing with each other and very supportive. Their mutual love and respect is palpable. This sports romance is an easy read with lots of comedic relief.
I received an ARC from Waterhouse Press via NetGalley.
This started off not so great for me. I honestly thought about not continuing this in the beginning. I thought that Gus was so damn arrogant and that Bo was an angry stuck up redhead. Now I’m not saying that it’s my favorite book of all time or the series, but it grew on me and I came to like it.
As you read, you realize there is more to Gus and Bo. I went from not really feeling it to rooting for them to make to the end. The relationship between them shifted and I was all here for it! They both realized that this was so much for than what they planned for. I really ended up getting attached to them. There were times that I wanted to hug Bo and tell her how strong she was. Also, Gus ended up being so dreamy that I couldn’t help smiling when he spoke.
I couldn’t give it more than 3 stars because of the rocky beginning and I would have loved an epilogue or some kind of future look at them.
Overall, this was full of steam and funny moments. While it’s not my favorite in the series, it is a good book and if you enjoyed the others you should give this one a shot.
A short, sweet and sexy hockey romance that’s quite simply a must read…
This isn’t my first Toni Aleo read, I absolutely love her Assassins series, and much like that series Misadventures with a Rookie is a hockey romance. I am so enamoured with the Misadventures series, I love that it gives readers the best of the authors they love and of authors that they may not have read before. Meredith Wild has done such a wonderful job of getting so many brilliant authors on board and every time a new round of releases for this series comes around I am just as excited as I was about the first. This is one of those series that I can’t help but follow with enthusiasm.
Although there are a few collaborations with Meredith, Rookie is solely written by Ms. Aleo. And it does not disappoint. If you are someone that has already read Toni Aleo before, you will devour this book, if you haven’t read her before you will become hooked on her writing. This is a novella, so it is a very quick read. I read it in one three to four hour sitting and I have to say that for a novella it read exceptionally well and very much like a full length novel. The plot is well thought out and delivered flawlessly. I couldn’t put it down and when it ended I was so disappointed that it wasn’t longer because I just loved Bo and Gus.
I found the sweetness was really beautifully balanced out with the sexual tension and the banter between the two. There is a slight undercurrent of angst throughout the first quarter of the book, in many ways it is a bit of a forbidden romance with Gus and Bo working on the same hockey team—the Malibu Suns. There is also a slight tinge of an enemies to lovers romance, but it’s not something that is glaringly in your face or even made out to be bigger than what it is. Although I liked that it added to Bo’s backstory.
I found both Gus and Bo extremely likeable. Like, I loved them…a lot. Their chemistry became something so potent and it really made it impossible to look away from them. The more you get to know them the more that chemistry rises until it boils over. Their interactions were at times mildly hilarious and I honestly loved that it didn’t just lead into the physical interactions from the off. I think that’s what makes this book standout from many other novellas. Ms. Aleo took her time and built on the chemistry and attraction until the physicality of their connection was inevitable.
I really can’t fault Misadventures with a Rookie, and if anything it just made me fall deeper in love with the sports romance genre. I found it really easy to read and enjoy, way too easy considering how quickly I devoured it. My only complaint is that the epilogue could’ve done with being a bit longer. I love an epilogue. I like to see what happens in the long run…and sadly, there wasn’t enough of that for me. But, saying that, this is a novella and it would be pretty nonsensical to have an epilogue that is detailed and drawn out. Basically, I’m just a nosey parker with letting go issues!
As always the Misadventure series just made my day and I cannot wait for more.
Favorite Quotes:
The way she looked at me, like I stole her doll and drew dicks on its mouth, revved my engines.
It had been a long time since I yearned for a woman, probably because they usually threw themselves at me. I was pretty sure the only thing redhead wanted to throw at me was a puck.
I would never intentionally hurt you. And besides, my mom would kill me if I did.
She scoffed. “Please, the only thing I thought that man was put on this earth for was to give me you. After that, he was slime.” “I’m right here, Lauren.” My face broke into a grin as my mom went on. “Well, obviously that’s changed. I love you, duh.”
I’ll never finish loving you. It just keeps going on and on. I’ve finished a lot of things. A period during a game, a goal, and plenty of women that I shouldn’t really be bringing up, but oh well, it’s part of my point. With you it’s constant and I can’t… I just can’t finish.
My Review:
I smirked my way through this witty and amusing New Adult/College/Hockey Romance, which is in all honesty, a trifecta of genres I rarely peruse. Maybe I should indulge in them more often, or maybe I should just read more of the comically talented Ms. Aleo’s work as I was engaged throughout and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I was highly entertained by the premise as well as the expletive-spewing and quirky accident-prone characters with their salacious sensual scenes and inner musings, which morphed into a sweet/sizzling romance. Ms. Aleo has a wicked sense of humor and excellent pacing. I adored the character’s clever exchanges, witty quips, and saucy banter – especially those flowing from the elder Perssons who were obviously the fun parentals. More, please, Ms. Aleo. I greedily want all your naughty tales.
Another great Misadventures book! This is the first book I have read by this author. But will definitely be checking her out.
Bo is trying to juggle school and work. She has sworn of men. In skates Gus who is wowed by the beautiful Bo.
Gus isn’t looking for a girlfriend he is just looking for a girl for right now. He doesn’t quite know what to do when he gets shot down.
These two have chemistry! And they some secrets to share…but will it wreck them?
Great book! I look forward to the next one!!
Toni Aleo lights the lamp with MISADVENTURES OF A ROOKIE. Malibu Suns hockey player, Gus Persson, is not used to being turned down. Sun’s ice girl/sports therapist, Bo St. James, has no problem shutting down the cocky defenseman, or does she. This contemporary sports romance is suitable for adult audiences.
I loved MISADVENTURES OF A ROOKIE. The characters were likable and well developed. I appreciated the similarities between Bo and Gus’ mother. I loved the banter between Bo and Gus. I enjoyed the conversations with Gus’ parents. Many of them were highly amusing; others were serious. Gus is a great guy. He is not what Bo expected. The characters go through a lot in this story. It is understandable why Bo is initially weary of Gus. The two have amazing chemistry and grow throughout the novel.
The plot was skillfully executed. There are some wonderful life lessons and viewpoints throughout the story. I found all the ER visits interesting. The ending was perfect. MISADVENTURES OF A ROOKIE had a different feel then Toni Aleo’s Assasins series and Bullies series, but I loved it as much as I do her other novels. Fans of Toni Aleo will not be disappointed. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
Toni Aleo is one of my favourite authors so as soon as I saw she was involved in a Misadventures book I had to read it, she did not disappoint what a fantastic read Misadventures of a Rookie is.
Gus Persson has it all, a Rookie with a shot at the NHL but is also a complete manwhore he has a one and done reputation that most of his teammates envy. Every puck bunny wants him except for the ice bunny with the beautiful red hair and what ever he does he can’t get her attention.
Bo St James knows what she wants and how she is going to get it and messing around with a player is not on the cards, it’s not in her future because they only cause heartbreak and she certainly is not getting nvolved with the biggest heartbreaker of them all Gus Persson.
This is a funny, emotional story about two people changing how they look upon live when feelings become involved, the witty banter between Gus and Bo is perfect and I was hooked from the first page to the very last line. This is a love story with real characters and if you love Hockey and sports romance this is a must read…….
Misadventures with a Rookie by Toni Aleo is book 11 in the Misadventures series. This is the story of Gus “the Bus” Persson and Bo St. James. This is easily a standalone book
Gus is a rookie but did just get drafted with a NHL team called The Tornadoes but is temporarily on the Malibu Suns team…and this is where Gus meets Bo.
Bo is studying to be a sports therapist and as part of a internship she is working as a Ice Girl on the Malibu Suns for about a year. Bo knows that Rookies are always thinking girls like her are easy and she sees that in Gus. Gus does have a reputation with the women and he has looks to back what he is offering but Bo is focused on her career.
Once they stop bickering and start seeing the other person as who they really are their relationship takes off.
Really enjoyed this book~
MISADVENTURES OF A ROOKIE by Toni Aleo is a stand-alone, contemporary, new adult, sports romance story line, a part of the multi-authored MISADVENTURES series. This is twenty-two year old AHL’s Malibu Suns hockey defenseman Gus ‘The Bus’ Persson, and twenty-one year old Sun’s ice girl/college student Bo St. James’ story line.
NOTE: I have seen this cover and title in two formats including Misadventures of a Rookie, and Misadventures WITH a Rookie
Told from dual first person perspectives (Gus and Bo) MISADVENTURES OF A ROOKIE follows the acrimonious relationship between AHL’s Malibu Suns hockey defenseman Gus ‘The Bus’ Persson, and twenty-one year old Sun’s ice girl/college student Bo St. James. Bo wants nothing to do with a man like Gus Persson. She knows his type only too well-a love’em and leave’em kinda guy whose reputation with the ladies, and his arrogant and cocky personality precedes his introduction to our story line heroine but a persistent Gus Persson slowly begins to break down Bo’s no-hockey player policy. With secrets in her past, Bo struggles with her attraction and reactions to our story line hero. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Bo and Gus, and the potential break-down when Gus is called up to the professional league.
Throughout the story line our couple find themselves caught up in a series of misadventures that land one or the other in the hospital ER. From a sprained ankle and dog bites, to a hilarious but painful allergic reaction, our couple find themselves participants in a comedy of errors as their relationship continues to grow and build. Bo’s preconceived notions about Gus are quickly blown out of the water with the revelation that his privileged upbringing was anything but. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense; Gus likes to talk dirty both in and out of the bedroom.
We are introduced to Gus’ parents, a couple whose humor, and love and support of their son hides an earlier failure that left Gus and his mother struggling to survive. The opposite end of the spectrum finds Bo’s parents struggling with our heroine’s sins of the past, as their constant reminders push our heroine further out of their life.
MISADVENTURES OF A ROOKIE is both humorous and heart breaking as our couple navigate through a series of screw-ups, and secrets. The premise is engaging and enjoyable; the romance is seductive and captivating; the characters are colorful, fun and entertaining.
OMG!!!!! Toni Aleo sure does know how to make a hockey player all kinds of goodness. She does not disappoint. Ashley @ White Hot Reads
I read this book in one evening because I couldn’t put this book down. This story is about a Hockey Rookie in the farm team who has eyes for the ice girl who has secrets and isn’t wanting to get involved with anyone. This book made me laugh, brought on the tears and the steamy hot sex made me fan myself. Again I love Toni Aleo and this book was everything I expected it to be.

How sweet it is to be loved by you…
Or annoyed by you…?
Gus the Bus is an annoying, arrogant, conceited, play boy, manwhore, Rookie hockey player. Or so Bo thinks.
The Girl With No Name spews hate and it’s hot as Hell. Or so Gus thinks.
These two are a train wreck you pray happens. The chemistry and fight is a flare in a sea of gasoline. It’s inevitable and it’s a beautiful mess. With ER visits that will have you cackling and oral skills that make professional hockey players look like peewee, there’s nothing to keep you from loving Gus long and hard. Except maybe a hidden secret and a snarky temptress with flaming red hair…
Misadventures With A Rookie is an absolute blast. It’s enemies (just go with it, Bo swears she hates him) to lovers in a fiery path to forever!
Thank you Net-Galley, PR Company, Publisher and Author for the opportunity to read an ARC of this story. These are my thoughts on the story and no form of payment was received.
OMG I totally loved this story. This is my all time favorite of the Misadventures series so far and made it into my all time favorite reads of all time. I so didn’t want the story to end. I was hooked from the get go and when I finished the book I was so sad to be done with the characters and the story. I would love more of these characters for sure.
Gus is a hockey player looking to make it to the NHL. He is cocky, he is hot and he is an awesome hockey player. He knows it and he shows it.
Bo is going to school to be a sports PT, she works as an Ice Girl and she wants nothing to do with hockey players. She really wants nothing to do with the cocky Gus, but as much as she fights him off, there is a chemistry there that she can’t fight forever.
I love that this hockey book actually had hockey in it, not just a player. We get game action and that is one thing I look for in a sports romance, is that the sport is actually part of the book. This book gave me the feels. At times I was laughing at the antics of Gus, times I was really sad when we get to know more about the main characters and what they went through in life. There is some hot and steamy scenes. I figured out part of it really easy but it didn’t take away from the story at all. I loved the secondary characters, the teammates of Gus and the other ice girls. I would love their stories.
I didn’t love Bo’s mom, I really wanted to smack her upside the head a few times.
Thank you for another great book! Like all the other Misadventures books this book is a standalone.
I received this ARC for an honest review.
Through a series of misadventures, we meet Bo Saint James and Gus “the Bus” Person. Bo is an Ice girl for the Malibu suns that is busy getting her degree in Physical therapy. Gus is a rookie defenseman for the Malibu Suns ready to get called up to the Twin Cities Tornadoes, nothing is more important to him than hockey. Bo sees Gus as nothing but a cocky, rich, show off, that she has experienced before and wants no part of. While Gus follows the strict rule of “one and done” with all the ladies around him, until meeting Bo, who presents him with a challenge he can not resist.
The couple challenge and push each other throughout the book making “no promises” to each other except to make no promises. They are presented challenges and unknowns that the must navigate to define who they are together.
This was a sweet hockey romance with two people who have heart wrenching back stories that intertwine, Will it bring them together or pull them apart?
Overall, a good story filled with hockey and ER dates that keep you invested in their misadventures. Gus was a little much in the beginning with his cocky attitude but he grows on you.
Toni Aleo is a new author to me but I am not new to the Misadventures Series. Rookie is a totally different story than any of the others. I liked Gus and his carefree attitude from the beginning. I wasn’t so sure about Bo as she just seemed a bit mean. I totally understood her not wanting anything to do with the hotshot hockey player but wasn’t sure about her way of showing it. As the story moves on and you begin to get to know Bo and her past you realize she has been hurt tremendously. The 2 of them have a lot of walls to break down in order to begin to heal.
I’m not usually a fan of sports related books but the hockey was just back ground to give you details about the characters. I enjoyed this quick, easy read. Love that all the books are stand alone so you can read in any order. There were just enough surprises to keep you wanting more. I recommend this book and will be looking for more by the author.
