Meet Tess Spencer, the married sleuth readers say feels like a friend.Child of the Appalachian mountains, Tess Spencer has experienced more than her share of heartache. The Glock-wielding, knife-carrying housewife knows how to survive whatever life throws at her. But when an anonymous warning note shows up in her best friend Miranda’s mailbox—a note written in a dead woman’s handwriting—Tess … woman’s handwriting—Tess quickly discovers that ghosts are alive and well in Buckneck, West Virginia. Hot on a cold trail, she must use limited clues and her keen insight into human nature to unmask the killer…or the next victim might be Tess herself.
Tinged with the supernatural and overshadowed by the mountains’ lush, protective presence, this twisting psychological mystery is the first in A Murder in the Mountains series.
This novel is written from a Christian worldview.

Full of twists and turns! Strong women. Old stories. True? Untrue? This mystery seems to move eerily back in time to present day. You’re never quite sure what the real connection until the truth unfolds.
did not care for this book, the story line was too long and drawn out
I found it hard to follow at first.
Good plot that kept me turning to the next page.
Kept my interest and was mysterious, always wanted to get to the end to find out who was doing it. Also added some romance amongst the mystery.
Tess and Thomas Spencer are married and live in a house a short distance from his parents home. His parents are Nicky Jo and Roger and their sons are Andrew, who is in college, and little red headed, freckled Petey. They are thrilled that Tess is pregnant. They love Tess and try to help her in any way they can.
Tess can shoot a gun and carries a knife if needed. She is a clever girl and visits Miranda , a wheelchair bound woman at the nursing home. One day Miranda announces to Tess that Paul has asked her to marry him. This sends out warning bells because Paul was once married to her sister Rose. Rose left Miranda her money in her will instead of to Paul, her husband. Tess thinks he is trying to get the money back. She has “dreams” from Rose giving her warnings. Rose is appearing in Tess’s yard.
This story has a lot of characters, twists, and turns. There is another book in the series. Maybe it will help explain some of the unanswered questions from this book. The book had a few funny parts, some sad, and some parts that leave the story hanging. After Miranda is poisoned, Tess and Miranda’s daughter, Charlotte set out to try to find out who is trying to hurt Miranda.
It was a bit tedious trying to read this book, but I did finish it.
I like this author. Had not read her before. Now one of my favorites.

Quick, clean read. Not totally predictable; a few surprises.
