Meet Tess Spencer, the married sleuth readers say feels like a friend.Child of the Appalachian mountains, Tess Spencer has experienced more than her share of heartache. The Glock-wielding, knife-carrying housewife knows how to survive whatever life throws at her. But when an anonymous warning note shows up in her best friend Miranda’s mailbox—a note written in a dead woman’s handwriting—Tess … woman’s handwriting—Tess quickly discovers that ghosts are alive and well in Buckneck, West Virginia. Hot on a cold trail, she must use limited clues and her keen insight into human nature to unmask the killer…or the next victim might be Tess herself.
Tinged with the supernatural and overshadowed by the mountains’ lush, protective presence, this twisting psychological mystery is the first in A Murder in the Mountains series.

Well written with a cast of great characters. See if you can guess the ending.
Looking forward to the next book.
6 stars. Awesome book
I enjoyed meeting this new author and cast of characters. The plot held my interest and kept me reading to the end. Anxious to read the next in series.
Great protagonist and twists and turns in the plot I didn’t expect! Loved this book!
This is an entertaining, suspense filled book that will keep you turning pages.
Miranda Warning is a great book. The way the characters are described from multiple persons’ viewpoints keeps the story interesting.
Original story was enjoyable, even though it was predictable. I didn’t give it a five because of the ending. It was a set up for the next book. It was a great story about weddings. Then nothing about the main characters wedding.
Loved it!!! Kept me on the edge until the very end. Wonderful characters, I am so enjoying getting to know all of them and being a part of their lives.
Tess, Miranda, Rose. The Good doctor….. You just don’t know what to think! Os she for real!?! Crazy!!! Keeps you on your toes! I didn’t want to put it down!
All I can say is wow! This was a fantastic mystery with lots of twists and turns that kept me guessing until the end. And, I loved Tess!!! I wish I knew her in real life. Her character was so much fun and I loved reading the mystery from her point of view. Her interactions with Thomas were definitely some of my favorite parts! I also now have a desire to visit West Virginia. This is the first novel I have read by Mrs. Gilbert and it certainly will not be my last. I can’t wait to read the next mystery in the series!
I really enjoyed reading this book. I made the mistake of reading this at night, though, and it kept me awake for a while. The characters were very well-developed and believable, and the story kept me coming back for more. I could barely put it down. I like the author’s style very much. I will definitely be reading more of her books!
Past and present collide as Tess Spencer helps her elderly friend, Miranda, discover who is sending ‘warning’ letters to her. As Tess tries to unravel the mystery of Miranda’s friend, Rose, who was murdered 40 years earlier, Tess herself becomes a target as secrets are revealed and troubling truths begin to surface. I received this audio book as a gift from narrator, Becky Doughty, who does a great job with the character voices. Initially the story was a little confusing as it bounced from present to past without a visual pause; but became easier to follow as the story progressed. The story is told from Tess’ point of view in the present and Rose’s point of view in the past. With common characters in both timelines it becomes a complicated story with plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing! My only disappointment is once the mystery is resolved, the story ends rather abruptly with little closure for many of the characters involved. I am hoping this is intentional and more will be revealed in book 2.
Kept me interested to the end
I could not put this book down. And now I can’t wait to read the next one.
Suspenseful to the end. Enjoyable read.
Very well written. I usually do not like books with back dates, but this one was well done and relevant.
I enjoyed this book. It had interesting characters as well as a grabbing story line.
A very good page turner. You won’t want to put it down.
I loved the book. It took me a little to keep straight who was who, but once I got that straight it was great. It keeps you guess till almost the end. I would recommend this book.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is the first time I have read anything by this author. I find her writing style believable and witty. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
