Military veterans experience stress and trauma that civilians cannot even begin to imagine. No matter what branch they were in, whether they saw combat or not, their service left an indelible mark on their bodies, hearts, and minds, souls and spirits. Even those who have not suffered external injuries can be affected by post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, anger, and other issues. They need … need healing on multiple levels.
Joan Hunter tackles all of the problems that veterans face in her new book, Miracles for Veterans. She covers some of the root causes; the positive aspects of service, such as growth and maturity, as well as the negative effects, including physical, emotional, and spiritual injury; and the consequences of service on general and cellular memory. Joan offers guidance to those ministering to veterans, healing prayers, and insights on prevention.
Joan notes God is limitless and His Word is true. He is ever ready to heal us if we only will believe.

I am the wife of a military service member so I was very interested in reading this book. My husband’s brother, a brother-in-law, two of his uncles, as well as other members of his family, have served in the military. Through the years of his service, we have made countless friends who serve in the military. We have watched as a number of these people were shipped overseas for deployments. I have been blessed the only deployment our own family has endured was when my husband’s Army Reserve Unit that he was the detachment commander for was the first unit activated for assistance after Hurricane Sandy.
I have however seen the devastation families go through when service members are deployed for months at a time and often to some dangerous places. While all of the information presented at the beginning of the book about stress, PTSD, and more are discussed, the heart of the book to me resides soundly with the service members and their families’ personal stories. From what I have seen in our years in the military, often service members are reluctant to seek help because they are concerned about the consequences of those actions. So we as a nation to embrace the idea that healing from the types of trauma the military faces are real and deserve treatment.
If you are a military service member or the family member of someone who has served, I strongly recommend reading this book. I truly believe it will touch the soul, spirit, and mind of those who read it.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
I think this book offers a unique perspective on veterans and what they have to deal with. They have offered their lives up for our country and in some cases returned as half of themselves, literally. What we don’t often see is the damage that’s done inside. The damage done to their spirits and their minds.
I have worked as a mental health nurse and have seen a lot of what our veterans are dealing with. I’ve looked at their diagnoses and seen the way the war has affected them. Granted I didn’t know them before but I can see glimpses of who they were.
This is a well-written book that I can recommend for everyone to read. I hope you enjoy it.

The book has some good information about PTSD which I think is helpful. The author goes into details about the triggers and things to try to avoid. Depression is one of the symptoms of PTSD. Her in-depth look at depression was good. I liked the personal stories and realized I knew one of the veterans personally. We went to church together in the building where Joan Hunt Ministries is located now. I enjoyed reading his story and finding out some things I didn’t know he had dealt with in the past. His wife is a wonderful person and every time the church doors were open they were there to serve.
I can’t say I agree with everything the author wrote because I think sometimes medication is needed in certain situations. Her ministry is about healing so I understand that her heart is to have faith that God will heal you without any medication. She does include scriptures that are helpful. I didn’t like the promotion of her ministry throughout the book. In the testimonies some give her ministry credit for their healing. God is our healer and sometimes even though we are faithful He doesn’t heal us the way we want.
The book is good in some areas but overall I was disappointed with the obvious promotion of her ministry. The book is useful for veterans in the respect that they can relate to the testimonies in the book. I live very close to the building where the author ministers at and I will need to visit it to get a better understanding of her teachings.
