New York Times bestseller: The true story of the WWII naval battle portrayed in the Roland Emmerich film is “something special among war histories” (Chicago Sun-Times). Six months after Pearl Harbor, the seemingly invincible Imperial Japanese Navy prepared a decisive blow against the United States. After sweeping through Asia and the South Pacific, Japan’s military targeted the tiny atoll of … military targeted the tiny atoll of Midway, an ideal launching pad for the invasion of Hawaii and beyond.
But the US Navy would be waiting for them. Thanks to cutting-edge code-breaking technology, tactical daring, and a significant stroke of luck, the Americans under Adm. Chester W. Nimitz dealt Japan’s navy its first major defeat in the war. Three years of hard fighting remained, but it was at Midway that the tide turned.
This “stirring, even suspenseful narrative” is the first book to tell the story of the epic battle from both the American and Japanese sides (Newsday). Miracle at Midway reveals how America won its first and greatest victory of the Pacific war—and how easily it could have been a loss.

Prange’s history of the battle of Midway is a first class read. I’ve read several historical books about this battle and find that Prange produced the best. I recommend that readers take one his two volumes on Pearl Harbor the read Miracle At Midway.
Gives a perspective of he Japanese side as well as the American side, Very detailed, sometimes gets bogged dwon in too much detail.
Very well researched and written. Presents both sides of the conflict in an informative and unbiased manner.
Outstanding overview of the before, the during, and the after of the battle that changed the tide of WWII in the Pacific. Great read!!
Really enjoyed this historical account of the Midway naval battle from the perspectives of both the American and Japanese navies!
I own the book At Dawn We Slept, so was drawn to this book by the post-mortal author Gordon W Prange. The book gives insight into the battle that saved the war for the U.S.
Excellent writing, very skilled author
An informative description of the Battle of Midway. The authors provide a comprehensive view of the actions and thinking on both sides. If you were to read only one book about the WWII Battle of Midway, this should be the one. That said,
at a few points the narrative stream becomes a bit disjointed. This is more than balanced by the great …
The time lines are difficult to follow as the book is not linear. The language is to lawyer like in the uses of words such as thus, heretofore et al
Lots of military jargon only drawback unless you’re a military historian.
Nothing new, a lot of trivia about what people were doing that could have just been made up. There are better books about Pearl Harbor.
Very complete treatment.
I have read about this adventure and viewed both movie version. To me, this book covers all topics, as presented in the movies while also filling in all the blank pages, not covered, by the film’s.
Best book on Midway I’ve read!
A precise, almost too detailed, description of the battle that changed the war in the Pacific and put the Japanese on the defensive as well as on the road to defeat!
I have read numerous histories about WWII so I thought with the overlap I would not be much surprised. I was thoroughly mistaken. So much more to know and understand about the epic battle at Midway. More than just another battle. A war unto itself.
I am a military history buff, so this book was a perfect selection for me. I gained additional insights into the history of the Battle of Midway and learned several new points about it. I found it hard to stop reading in order to do the other things I find necessary each day.
This book takes you through the build up to the battle from both …
