MINUTES TO DIE by Susan Sleeman is the second book in the Homeland Heroes series. It’s the edge of your seat reading book about FBI Special agent Kiley Dawsome, RED team leader, ICE Agent Evan Bowers and a terroristic threat to this nation that could end up being worse than 9/11.
When Kiley’s confidential informant, Firuzeh Abed was gunned down by a sniper at a meet up where she was to give information about an imminent terrorist threat that was said to make 9/11 pale in comparison, she was determined to bring the Abed family justice for her murder and to keep the family safe from harm. Kiley has only Firuzeh’s dying words to go on – Port, coma and Box 342. Will it be enough to stop this terrorist threat that is said to place millions of United States citizen in danger?
ICE Agent Evan Bowers has had lots of experience with protecting this nation and its people from working as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal technician in the Navy in Special Forces like the SEALS & Rangers as well as with Secret Service and State Department to protect our highest officials. He’s now with JTTF – Joint Terrorism Task Force – following clues on high ranking terrorist being smuggled into this country. Is it possible that the case he is working is connected to Kiley’s case?
Kiley and Evan have a past history – all of it not good. When they were working together and Evan was in the lead when a fellow agent – Kiley’s partner, was killed. Kiley has always blamed Even for his death harboring ill feelings towards him. In the past, there had been an attraction, a spark, between them. That all ended with Olin’s death. When they find themselves face to face again working together, can they the put the past behind them to work on a common goal? They have to because their country and millions of lives depend on them!
MINUTES TO DIE is a fabulous face-paced, edge of your seat story that you won’t be able to put down. From page one, Susan Sleeman grabs your attention, with her wonderful storyline and attention to detail, and your heart, with an underlying romance brewing, and gives them both a work out. It will leave you exhausted from the rush, ecstatic for the people that defend our country with such devotion to bring those on the wrong side of the law to justice – like the RED team where each plays a small part like a spoke in a wheel knowing that the wheel can’t roll without all its parts, and leaves you smiling and anxious for the third book in this series.
Loved the Christian thread throughout the book. Especially this quote:
“No one has power over you unless you give it to them. You are in control of your life and your choices. Decide your own future.
Sure, God is ultimately in control, but if her day-to-day actions fell within His well, they were hers to command.”
I would most definitely highly recommend MINUTES TO DIE by Susan Sleeman to anyone that loves a Christian, exciting, true to life book that will leave you wanting more from this amazing author. Although part of a series, MINUTES TO DIE can definitely be read as a standalone book. It gets my 5+ stars!
Another long awaited Susan Sleeman book, and one that I thoroughly enjoyed. Minutes to Die is about Kylie and Evan. Kylie is a member of the RED team and the only female member. While Evan is an ICE agent, who is dealing with a terrorist threat. Both Kylie and Evan are thrown in an investigation together that can determine whether or not millions of people die from a terrorist attack. Unfortunately, Kylie is still furious with Evan about the death of her teammate. She holds him accountable, and while she will work with him, she makes it very clear that she does not trust him.
Minutes to Die was such a good book, and I really liked seeing Kylie and Evan’s story. Kylie was definitely an interesting character because while trying hard to be a confident and excellent agent, she was extremely insecure. I liked the fact that you were able to see how hard it was for her to be confident and strong. I also adored her relationship with Mack. He has become my new favorite character through this book, and it was so fascinating to see how all the teammates worked the balance of being friends and agents.
Evan had a whole different dynamic with Kylie than her teammates, and one that I extremely liked. He supported her while making it clear that she didn’t need him to support her. In this world, it can seem like if a man protects a woman then they are thought of as weak and unable to help themselves However, I think Ms. Sleeman made it clear that Evan loved Kylie enough to protect her and to encourage her, and I’m really glad that she made that distinction.
The suspense was also very entertaining. While I had read books about terrorist before, I enjoyed seeing this different perspective. I already had a ton of respect for law enforcement officers, but this just increased my respect even more. One thing that I was sad about was that Taylor was not really in the book, but I can see how it didn’t really make sense in the story for her to be there. This was a great book that I would definitely recommend. It had minimal gore and only some intense scenes, and it was very clean. I can’t wait to read the next book!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Loved the story and the development of the characters! Can’t wait to see what comes next.
Minutes to Die by Susan Sleeman is an amazing novel of suspense. With both FBI and ICE officers on a mission to prevent another large scale terrorist attack, the action in this book starts on page 1 and never stops. It is a quick read as a result. I highly recommend this novel to readers of romantic suspense. You won’t be disappointed! I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own.
Minutes to Die by Susan Sleeman is the second book in the Homeland Heroes series and you definitely don’t want to miss it if you love inspirational romantic suspense.
I’m really enjoying this series and look forward to reading more in the future.
I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.
Great book. Lots of suspense as the RED Team tries to find and stop Terrorists before their plot can kill millions of people. As the minutes tick down you will be on the edge of your seat and almost holding your breath. There is also a search on to find a murderer and a background thread on the disappearance of three young girls. This book held my attention until the end. I recommend this series. I think you will love it also. Can’t wait for the next book in the series to release.
Title: Minutes to Die (Homeland Heroes #2)
Author: Susan Sleeman
Pages: e-book
Year: 2020
Publisher: Bethany House Publishers
My rating is 3 out of 5 stars.
Kiley Dawson is an agent with an elite task force for the FBI in Washington, D.C. Kiley’s CI has information about a potential terrorist plot to be carried out on 9/11 that will harm millions of people. They agree to meet but before her CI can give her all the details, disaster strikes. Kiley promises to seek justice. Meanwhile, in Tacoma, Washington, ICE Agent Evan Bowers has tracked down a shipping container that has been converted to living space for people to enter the country illegally. Where are these people now? Are they connected to the terrorist plot, or do they have another purpose?
The little information Kiley received from her CI leads her to Tacoma where she runs into a former agent she had teamed with on a prior case that cost another agent his life. Kiley holds Evan responsible for this agent’s life. She wants nothing to do with him, but he has information and experience that could help her case and potentially stop the loss of millions of lives. She reluctantly agrees to add him to her team. Kiley and Evan once were attracted to each other before. Evan still has strong feelings for Kiley, but she is holding on to her anger and her heart.
Not great, but not terrible either. There were too many slow spots in the plot with time spent talking on the phone, texting or reading emails for my taste. I didn’t make a connection with either of the two main characters. Kiley was so different in this book as opposed to her character in book one of the series. Evan seemed too focused on their relationship during this extremely tense few days. I also would have liked to see more faith in evidence, other than when in a difficult situation. I did like the team dynamics of Kiley, Mack and Sean. They work together like a well-oiled machine and are protective of each other. I will read book three of the series
Note: The opinions shared in this review are solely my responsibility.
Be prepared to stay up all night reading…
Breathe. In. Out. Repeat. I just finished Minutes To Die and I have to say that it has one of the most tense and intense climactic scenes between the heroes and villains that I’ve probably ever read. I thought the first book in the Homeland Heroes book was intense but Susan Sleeman definitely topped it with this book!
I liked Kiley and Evan pretty much from the start. They both have a lot of baggage but they manage to slowly work through much of it even as they are saving the world from some pretty evil terrorists. Talk about multi-tasking. Susan Sleeman has done a great job blending those moments with the action scenes in Minutes To Die.
Susan Sleeman sure had me on a search for knowledge with this book and I found myself Googling some odd stuff, from sound wave tattoos to a specific dam in the Colorado River drainage. And no, I won’t tell you any more about why, you’ll just have to read Minutes To Die for yourself.
Through the Homeland Heroes series there has been an overarching mystery with new clues being revealed in each book and I can’t wait to find out where those clues lead in the next book. Definitely something that I’m looking forward to reading when it comes out in the spring!
(I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)
FBI Agent Kiley Dawson blames him for the death of a fellow agent, and friend, in an op gone wrong. ICE Agent Evan Bowers is still in love with her. When their investigations collide, they must put aside their differences in order to save millions of lives and stop a cell of terrorists.
I just love the RED team! These characters are so dynamic that I wish we got more from them. The stakes of the story are so high that I feel like we don’t get much time to just sit and enjoy these characters we grow to love. That begin said, WOW what a wild ride. The team only has 7 days to untangle a terrorist plot that has threatened to affect millions of people. Racing all across the country as new leads and new disasters arise, the team barely takes a breath before it’s all said and done. If you like high stakes and fast paced, this is the story for you.
While I didn’t find it difficult to listen to on audio, I do dislike that they changed the narrator mid series. Once you start with a narrator, you have given your characters a “voice”. It was hard for me to jump back in where I left off because of this. I did get used to the new narrator, but I did like the previous narrator better. It takes A LOT for me, personally, to not be able to get passed a narrator, but I can definitely see how some may not like the change.
Minutes to Die
Homeland Heroes #2
By Susan Sleeman
FBI Agent Kiley Dawson’s CI has been killed just moments after revealing that a terrorist attack is imminent. With only a few words to go on, stopping the coming devastation seems nearly impossible, but the RED Team doesn’t know the meaning of impossible.
ICE Agent Evan Bowers has tracked down evidence of smuggled terrorists. Terrorists that came prepared to carry out an attack. But with no way to identify the suspects, the chance of stopping them has dramatically dropped. Calling in what he’s found brings the RED Team into his investigation – an investigation he is determined to be a part of. Now he just needs to convince the lead agent to keep him on – not an easy sell given the history he and Kiley share. One in which her former partner was killed under his leadership, and she lays the blame squarely on his shoulders.
But time is short, and to accomplish what they need to will require working through their discomfort. Can the two work together long enough to stop the coming attack that is rumored to be bigger than 9/11? Or will the lack of online or dark web chatter work to their detriment? And what about the growing attraction between Kiley and Evan? Will the mistakes of the past prevent them from having a future?
The clock is ticking down…
Minutes to Die is an excellent sequel to Seconds to Live that readers who are fans of Romantic Suspense will enjoy diving into this draw you in action from page one. Minutes are slipping away as the few clues that are known are too vague to pinpoint an exact location or mode of attack. If you want keep you up all night suspense this is the book you want to move to the top of your tbr pile. And when you add in Kiley’s childhood issues that take on a new meaning as the threat draws nearer you have an intense read in your future.
Tick, tick, tick…
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations – all thoughts expressed are my own.
Minutes to Die by Susan Sleeman is the second book in her Homeland Heroes series. Terrorists have been smuggled into the U.S. FBI Agent Kiley Dawson and ICE Agent Evan Bowers must find them before they set off an attack worse than 9/11. This was a great suspense story. It grabs you from the first sentence and doesn’t let go until the final sentence. With Susan’s ability to write such great stories she should be on an FBI consultation team! She keeps you up to date on all the new technology and methods without bogging the story down. The chemistry between Kiley and Evan was very intense. The ending was a nail biter! Racing the clock is never a good idea; but, throw in bombs with minutes to detonation and terrorists and it gets a lot more explosive. I enjoyed being a part of the team. I can’t wait for the next book.
I received this book from the author for my honest review.
Nonstop action, heart-stopping suspense, a dash of romance, and a well-integrated thread of inspiration and faith give this book all the elements of a fantastic romantic suspense read. Susan Sleeman is a master at creating realistic, flawed, but engaging characters and then throwing them into life-and-death situations to see if they can figure out how to come out the other side alive, while catching the bad guys. FBI Agent Kiley Dawson and ICE Agent Evan Bowers are characters with a shared past that didn’t turn out well. When thrown together to help solve the case, they have to learn to trust and work with each other. I enjoyed seeing their relationship evolve as the story progressed.
As always, Sleeman’s careful research shines in this book as she inconspicuously educates the reader in crime detection and solving, scene processing, and the various organizations, skills, and technology used to catch the criminals while simultaneously unfolding a riveting tale. This is one of the reasons why she has become one of my favorite, must-read suspense authors. I’m eagerly looking forward to the next book in this series. 4.5 stars
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy from the author and publisher. All opinions are my own.
Another action-packed, romantic suspense from Susan Sleeman! The author did a fantastic job researching terrorists and federal law enforcement. This story was intense!
ICE Agent Evan Bowers and FBI Agent Kiley Dawson had worked together a few years before when a special op goes wrong and Kiley’s partner is killed. Kiley blamed Evan for his death. She had to put aside her bitter feelings, because the team needed Evan’s help. Along the way, they both learn about forgiveness and trust. I enjoyed learning more about the team. They each had their own areas of expertise which helped them work very well together.
I look forward to reading Mack and Addison’s story next!
Sleeman does a remarkable job leading the reader through the twists and turns of Agent Kiley Dawson and her team as they race against time to uncover a terrorist plot. If you enjoy realistic romantic suspense, add this book to your TBR pile.
Never Give Up!
An informant whispers that an attack is going to happen on 9/11, and it will be worse than the original. Shortly afterward, the tipster is murdered in front of FBI Agent Kylee Dawson. She jumps into action with her elite RED team to determine the details of the threat. After learning terrorists have snuck into the country in a cargo container, ICE Agent Evan Bowers is asked to join the team.
But Kylee and Evan have a history, one that didn’t end well. Kylee works to put aside her negative feelings towards him, for the good of the nation, as the team races across the country searching for clues. The pace is frantic, and lots of top-notch equipment along with amazing technology is put into play to solve it.
This tale will keep your pulse high as action and excitement fill every page–while millions of lives hang in the balance. At the same time, a romance develops. It is almost as exciting as the chase itself. This is a clean story told from a Christian viewpoint. I recommend this 5-star book to those who enjoy fast action thrillers teamed with a love story.
Bethany House Publishers through NetGalley has provided Tickmenot with a complimentary copy of, Minutes to Die, for the purpose of review. Opinions are my own.
Minutes to Die takes you even deeper into the world of our Homeland Heroes, and on even more of a roller coaster ride than Seconds to Live! This book should come with a ‘DO NOT DISTURB’ sign because putting it down once you’ve read past the first paragraph is nearly impossible. I love how, when you start a series by Susan Sleeman, in book one you enjoy getting acquainted with the characters. As soon as you start book 2 you feel a definite friendship relationship developing. By the time you get to book 3 or 4 it feels like the characters are part of the family. I loved how Kiley, who isn’t normally a take charge person, took the lead to get justice for her informant. It was awesome watching all of the strong males support her and work as a team to accomplish their nearly impossible task of finding terrorists and catching the killer. There is so much detail going into all of the different parts of law enforcement and homeland security-I have a whole new appreciation for all of our country’s heroes who put their lives on the line for our safety and well-being.
I’m a big fan of Susan Sleeman‘s books, but Minutes to Die, the second book in her Homeland Heroes series, might be her best one yet. Impossible to put down and filled with incredible detail, it follows the RED Team as they attempt to stop a deadly attack before the anniversary of 9/11.
Kiley Dawson began her career as a shy computer nerd, but when her first confidential information is murdered in front of her, she wants lead on the investigation into the information her CI attempted to bring her. Details that lead her team into a race against time.
Evan Bowers has liked Kiley Dawson for years, even when a failed operation put a wedge between them. Now she and her team arrive at his crime scene to take over his investigation. He steps up to make himself invaluable to the team so she can’t box him out of chasing down the bad guys.
As I read Minutes to Die, it amazed me how deep and tangled the web of the investigation becomes. Kiley and her team felt it, too. And the ending! Wow! The research it took to make this story possible is an art in and of itself!
If you’re a fan of suspense, this is the book for you! It has threads of romance and faith, too. With an unbelievable plot that will keep you wondering whether the team will be able to figure out who the bad guys are and what exactly they are planning. Before times runs out.

This is book two in the Homeland Heroes series. I believe it is a stand alone book, however you do miss a little history of the RED team. You do not have to read book one to understand book two (you would miss a good read though).
I love the writing style of Susan Sleeman. She does a lot of research and packs her books full of action, mystery, suspense, FBI/Police and romance. This book is no different. Kiley and Evan have a history they both must overcome all while working together to stop a terrorist attack. I love the sparks between them and the friendship of the RED team. I can’t wait to read book three.
This is a very intense romantic suspense novel!
I love both of the main characters in this book. Kiley and Evan are incredibly well developed. They both have things from their past that make it difficult for them to work together. There is self blame and unforgiveness that needs to be worked through. I loved seeing both of them as they progressed through the journey in the midst of the very dangerous case that they are working on that needs their full focus.
The plot of the case is amazing! It has so many twists and turns that kept me sucked in. I was fascinated by all of the different people of interest that Kiley and the rest of the team were trying to track down to find the actual terrorists involved in their case. The amount of details that were included in the case and the activities each agent was handling was fantastic. It was very apparent that the author did a lot of research before and during the writing of this book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher, through NetGalley. I was not required to write a positive review. All of the opinions expressed are my own.

Another splendid novel by Susan Sleeman! So many intricate details into terrorist investigations, protocol, and other government agencies working together to solve a national threat indicate a lot of research went into pulling this novel off in a superb manner.
While FBI Agent Kiley Dawson resents the thought of working with ICE Agent Evan Bowers, her teammates convince her they may need Evan’s expertise may in their investigation. Kiley blames Evan for the death of her former partner. She is convinced he’d made a bad decision and didn’t take his job seriously. She can’t allow her past feelings for him to continue under those circumstances.
Evan finds himself working side-by-side with Kiley again, against her apparent wishes. He blames himself for her partner’s death, and he knows she places full blame on him. He needs to explain to her the details of the operation and where things went wrong, but she won’t listen. Evan struggles to dismiss his attraction to her knowing she’d never give him a chance at a relationship.
The intense search for a terrorist cell continues, and the threats build as they get closer and closer to locating the targets. Will Kiley and Evan zero in on the cell’s intended target and save the lives of millions? Will Kiley settle down long enough to hear Evan out? Will she release her anger against him?
The twists and complex details in Minutes to Die will keep you on the edge of your seat. If you are a romantic suspense fan, you’ll love this novel.
I give Minutes to Die five stars.
I received a copy of this novel in return for my honest review. All thoughts are my own.
