The book is divided into four chapters, and each chapter serves a different purpose. Deals with a different pain. Heals a different heartache. Milk and Honey takes readers through a journey of the most bitter moments in life and finds sweetness in them because there is sweetness everywhere if you are just willing to look.
What a remarkable, heartbreaking, breathtaking book. I’ve already read it fully through three times because just once isn’t enough – Kaur’s words demand to be read over and over until they’ve sunk deeply and permanently into your bones. While this is an especially powerful book for women, it is also a stunning look at being human in this world and navigating the nuances of love and hurt and healing. Do yourself a favor and pick this up immediately!
Riveting, real, captivating, lasting, and important.
Kaur succeeds in taking both the most difficult parts of being a woman (rape, abuse, heartbreak) and the most excruciatingly beautiful (falling in love – with both yourself and another) and making them into short, one- or two-page poems that perfectly capture the feelings associated with these phenomena.
A significant text for women and those who love them that should be read over and over.
This is my new favorite poetry book! It’s full of femininity and many of the raw emotions and circumstances women experience throughout life. Much of it is tragic, but much of it is healing too. The author Rupi Kaur provides a journey through all of it. There is a poem that starts “I want to apologize to all the women I have called pretty before I’ve called them intelligent or brave..” Wow! Such a powerful sentiment that resonated with me and probably does with many other women as well. Most of the poetry is short, and easy to read, which makes it, even more, my favorite type of poetry book. It’s powerful, yet easy to digest.
OMG I feel that all things woman are validated. The struggle, the heartbreak, the beauty, THE STRENGTH.
I loved every…single…word.
My favorite quote:
“if you were born with the weakness to fall you were born with the strength to rise”
Based on the dichotomy of positive and negative reviews, it’s clear that “Milk and Honey” isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. I enjoyed it, but then I could relate to many of the stories of love, heartache, grief, pain, and healing conveyed throughout this collection. I fully understand that others may not find any such connection with Kaur’s writing, particularly if they haven’t experienced the human condition through a lens similar to Kaur’s. In a medium like poetry, the essence of the author’s personal expression is as an individual sharing something that is both honest and personal — not everyone is going to appreciate it and that’s okay.
This was an unusual, beautiful, and ultimately uplifting collection of poetry.
Divided into four sections–the hurting, the loving, the breaking, and the healing–Rupi Kaur’s poetry draws you into a cycle of living that many of us have experienced. Starting from the point of a painful childhood, she moves onto finding love as an adult, losing that love, and then finding and reclaiming herself.
At least half of the poems in this book are illustrated by Kaur, which makes the collection unusual, part poetry and part art. The two work together to drive deeper into the emotions. Though there are some longer, prose-like poems, many of the poems here are very short, like passing thoughts. Still, they get under your skin the more you read into the collection and get absorbed into the emotional cycle.
A must-read for poetry fans and those who understand the pain and pleasure of love.
These poems speak my mind. I always have trouble expressing my feelings but these poems capture all of my deepest inner thoughts beautifully. I strongly recommend anyone who has not read this book should go read it now. You will be surprised, and inspired.
A wonderful collection of poems. These poems take you from a childhood tragedy, falling in love, heartbreak, and finally to healing and understanding. I really enjoyed all of these. My favorite poem out of this collection was the water poem. To me, it was really powerful.
milk and honey is a beautiful book of poetry about overcoming those moments in life that have the power to destroy us and also living in the moments where we are with the one with love, even if that person is our own self. There are also poems about living life as a woman in today’s society. Some of the poems are just a few words and others are little longer. But all of the poems resonate will resonate with you and give you something to think about.
I don’t usually enjoy poetry. Loved this.
Reading this book seemed like sharing the journey with Rupi Kaur.
She shows you every single part of her broken self, she shares with you her weaknesses, her experiences, her tragedy and her rising journey. Not only does she put you in her place, but she also allows you to discover your inner self through every well-crafted word.
You get to know you’re not alone and that even through the sufferings there will always be light and hope and a place where you can start and rise from.
I just can’t express how meaningful and powerful this book was to me and how it still tugs in my heart strings every time a talk about it.
Whoever you are, wherever you come from and whatever you believe in, I’m sure this book will mark you in a very special way and will shed light on a part of yourself you have never discovered before.
It’s life. Real life…could be my life.
love this book

Definitely not my cup of tea!

A nice wind of emotions that is calming to me.
The best way to describe this book is “unforgettable”.
Great easy read, very deep
Definitely relatable in some ways. Poetry is amazing if you are into some short poems. Written very well
