Interesting read. Not as compelling as the original, but, given that we know where the book is going to go, it still did a good job of keeping me curious and reading. Definitely worth the read if you enjoy the original tetralogy.
It’s fun to be back in the Twilight world and hear Edward’s thoughts. It’s REALLY long though.
I am so happy that she wrote this book finally. I do wish that it would have contained point in time throughout the whole series since this is the only one she is writing but it will have to do. Being in Edward’s head was enlightening and sad all at the same time. It was nice to see Bella through his eyes though. This took me back to when the excitement all began for these two. A must read for the Twilight fandom.
I was at the perfect age to be a twi-hard and was firmly team Edward. Therefore, I was really excited to learn Stephenie Meyer‘s was writing Midnight Sun. Getting a look at Edward’s point of view, and missing out on a lot of Bella’s internal monologue was a definite plus.
I really enjoyed reading this book. You can see how Stephanie’s writing has improved since her first novel. Edward’s perspective was both a little darker and I felt, a little deeper. I also felt like James went from being a stereotypical bad guy in Twilight, to something a little more sinister which gave the story a little bit more depth as well.
If you’re a fan of Twilight, this is a fun read.

Loved every page. Super sweet all the way to the end. It was interesting to read Twilight from Edwards perspective. I’m so glad Stephenie finally finished this. It was a long time coming. Team Edward!
As a devoted Team Edward fan through all 4 of the original Twilight books and all 5 movies, I really wanted to love this book. Unfortunately, it just didn’t live up to the hype for me. First of all, it was way too long. There were pages and pages of Edward agonizing. Everything was just so wordy, without adding much substance. I think I would have enjoyed this book much more if it had been shorter.
Also, since I’ve read the original Twilight series and seen the movies, I already knew the plot. Of course, this was Edward’s version of the story and while there were new insights not available in Twilight because Bella wouldn’t have known, it wasn’t enough to really keep me interested. I did appreciate being able to “hear” the thoughts of the other students and understand how Edward feels about his family.
I was halfway through the book when I almost quit out of boredom. Thankfully, someone recommended I try the audiobook. Listening to the story definitely helped and carried me through to the action part of the story. I went back to reading for the last 25% of the book.
Hearing Edward’s voice, I was somewhat creeped out with his obsessiveness. Reading Bella’s version of him in Twilight, he was endearing and protective. Having full access to his thoughts, I felt he was a bit too much. Or maybe I’m 13 years older, now over 40, and have a different perspective.
If this book had been released before the movies or at least while Twilight mania was still at its peak, maybe I would have loved it as much as I loved the first 4 books. Either way, I’m still #TeamEdward forever.
3.8
There was a lot of push and pull with this book for me. Some parts really interested me while others dragged on. It felt like it took me forever to finally finish it. I enjoyed hearing Edward’s perspective from certain events and what he was doing during his absences in the first book. I found it fun to see the workings within the Cullen group more closely, like the dynamic between Edward and Alice. I also loved getting insight on other characters’ thoughts and feelings. I’m glad she included a bit about how Charlie and Renee are perceived/read by Edward. There were just a lot of little details that I really appreciated.
Overall, reading this was extremely nostalgic and I loved it enough just for that factor. Taylor and I were obsessed with these books and I loved revisiting that feeling. I haven’t read the first one since I was in middle school so if little things were different I did not notice them. There were some larger occurrences that I did notice from recently watching the movie but none of them bothered me. I honestly think it would’ve been boring if everything had been exactly the same. This book was LONG but I’m glad I read it and will always be thankful to Stephenie Meyer for creating this series.
How to rate this long awaited book?
On the one hand, Midnight Sun by Stephanie Meyer was finally finished after waiting over ten years. I must’ve read the first five chapters five times at least from Stephanie’s official website. At long last, I finally got to see Edward’s point of view regarding Bella and the events from Twilight.
What happens in New Moon makes sense. I still hate it. Edward made an epically stupid decision. But I understand now. I’m still Team Edward. I always will be.
On the other hand, Edward overthinks, over analyzes, over obsesses…a lot. He really truly hates who he is. And that is so very sad. It makes me like him more though, that he wants to save Bella from that fate, even at the cost of his own life.
To all those that complained about how long Edward’s thought processes are in the book, my rebuttal is that it fits with the rest of the books. It’s well established that the vampires can think a whole lot more in a minute than a human can. So yeah, it’s to be expected. You’re reading a book from Edward’s POV. You get his thoughts. But I do admit, I may have skimmed a bit over some of the longer passages.
I loved the part where Edward and Alice are driving like bats out of hell from the airport to the ballet studio. Seeing how Edward and Alice work together to mitigate future issues was totally awesome. I also loved watching Edward listening into Alice’s mind while she figures out how to cover up what happened to Bella. Wow…mind blown!!!
The book wasn’t meant to tell a new story. It was only to bring depth and dimension to the existing one. Edward and the Cullen’s, even the Jacob and his tribe, its so much more colorful now in my mind.
Stephanie did an amazing job of fleshing out the story for us in a way that stayed true to the original series. While the book isn’t an instant favorite, it’s an immediate and permanent addition to the Twilight Saga which I will treasure and reread again in the future.
I rate this book 4 stars
So many thoughts! I absolutely loved this and wish that the entire series had been written from Edward’s point of view. He brings so many emotions and elements to this series and we truly understand the other characters so much more, and for a fan, this is everything!! I loved the inner thoughts and frustrations we saw. The battle that ragged within Edward was phenomenal to witness! Would he be able to abstain from Bella’s blood or would the lurking monster have his way. I loved how much of Alice we got here as well. The relationships the Cullen family forged are such complicated and beautifully pieced together events. I liked Bella in the series, but here I too fall for her. There are a few theories explained in here as to why Edward can’t read Bella’s mind and they are super cool and intriguing! All the fangirly squeals and thrills happening here! I love Stephenie Meyer and her writing style. The descriptive language she uses and how she sets a scene are delightful and hit you right in the feels! I can’t wait for more books from this beautifully beloved world!
I loved reliving Twilight through Edward’s eyes. It’d been a while since I read the book and it was fun to go back and experience the story anew. I also enjoyed remembering how the movie deviated from the book. For me the book also explained some of Edward’s actions and re-actions or the actor’s portrayal of Edward in various scenes. Thanks to Stephenie for this publication!
Midnight Sun is the book that all loyal Twilight fans have dreamed would finally be finished, and in the depressing year of 2020, Stephenie Meyer delivered it like a special present to her fans. The very day it was announced on her website that the book was coming out, I knew I needed this hardcover edition to add to the other four books in the series that I own, and I preordered it immediately. On the day of its release, I decided to purchase it on Audible so that I could savor every word, and I was not disappointed. It was narrated by Jake Abel, a new to me narrator, who did an excellent job, especially after I got used to his voice and banished Robert Pattinson’s voice from my head.
As a much older reader than the many tweens and teenagers that the series was written for, I have enjoyed the books so much and love that Twilight turned so many people into readers. I enjoyed hearing the story from Edward’s viewpoint, mostly since there were so many things going on that the readers didn’t realize in Twilight. I’ve heard a few grumblings that the book is too long and tedious, but I didn’t find it that way at all. It was fascinating to know all the things Edward was thinking and feeling.
I gave this book four stars and am so happy to add it to my library. I’m sure many other Twilight fans feel the same.
I have waited so many years to get my hands on this book and it did not disappoint. It felt like I came home after being away for so long and was enveloped in the warm embrace of Twilight. It was so wonderful to see the world of Twilight through Edward’s eyes. I actually think I perfer it in some ways. Edward has a way of describing the same events that I have already read and making them feel new and different. We also received more history into the family in this book. I enjoyed learning more about Carlisle through Edward’s world view. My biggest complaint is this book is entirely too long. It was completely unnecessary for it to be 662 pages. Meyer could have given us a shorter version of this story and it have been just as good. This was a wonderful walk down memory lane. Thank you Stephanie Meyer for bringing me back to my happy place in Forks.
I liked the idea of the story from Edward’s point of view – don’t get me wrong. I think the story just lacked in the execution. The problem wasn’t even the fact that it was obviously from an angsty 17-year-old’s perspective because I expected that. Teenagers tend to go all-in when it comes to serious relationships, and for Edward to fall so completely for Bella was expected, given the fact that he was a vampire who had met his someday-mate.
Where the trouble, for me, stems from is that fact that I’d already read the previous Twilight series. Therefore, I knew the story from beginning to end and knew all of the situations in which Edward found himself. I didn’t think it was important for the author to cover every moment of the relationship from the first book. I believe it could have been compacted a bit, especially since it was so much broody vampire that it got tiring to listen to.
I loved being able to see how his mind worked, especially in the thickest parts of the situational relationship he had with Bella. How he read the thoughts of others, especially Alice’s predictions and Rosalie’s hatred and anger, were wonderful additions to the story. And it gave us insight to the reasoning behind some of Edward’s actions and reactions and showed us how he saw the impact his feelings for Bella affected and would affect his family and those around them. The chase scene with James and the recordings were gut-wrenching and so important to our understanding of Edward’s cautiousness.
My problem was hour upon hour of depression and sadness. There were so few happy moments that I had to listen in pieces so it wouldn’t drag me down into its gloomy intensity. It took several days for me to get through it because it was just so depressing and repetitive. There was so much I believe could have been condensed. There were some pronunciation moments by the narrator that had me irritated too. Perhaps, his deep voice could have been one of the contributing factors. It just seemed to drone on. The inflections in his voice for the other characters were a little over the top. I may have gotten more out of it if I had bought the book and read it in my mind with my own voices. It was all a little disappointing after all of the hype.
Truly a dark thing to relive through the eyes of Edward. But lord so necessary to not see it as a pure epic love story reading it years later thru the eyes of a “monster”. I was dazzled along with Bella and never honestly thought how painful it would’ve been for Edward. Please tell me we’ll get the others as well in his point of view!
If you loved Twilight then this is a must read! I have waiting and hoping that Ms.Meyer would finish this book! I absolutely loved hearing Edward’s POV, and everyone else’s. Lol. It was wonderful reliving this story. I’m in love again. He is more brooding in this story. Which gives a different feeling especially near the ending.
Twilight retold
I have mixed feelings about this book.
On the one hand the twilight fan of my youth loved finally having Edwards POV it was a long time coming ! (But I can’t help but feel I would hav enjoyed it much more if it had come sooner )
This story is very much a retelling if the first book ‘twilight ‘ and it gives us a much deeper understanding of who Edward is and a closer look at his family and their gifts and background stories .
I liked this about the book but I’m just going to go ahead and say it .. it was looong . And several parts of it dragged on a bit too much . But thankfully it did pick up again once the hunt started !
My thoughts on Edward are also mixed . He was very different to how I imagine him – a lot less sure of himself and a lot less…. mature I guess . I thought given his age and years of ‘life’ he would be wiser but he still thought and acted like I’d imagine a teen would . And was somewhat wishy washy .
In this book this version of Bella was just frustrating . I’m so glad I re read the original twilight before this one because I feel of I didn’t know Bella’s POV as well id swear she was not brave or strong but stupid and naive !! So I would definitely suggest reading the original first if you haven’t .
I think overall though I enjoyed this as an addition to the original story and I’d still like to read more from Edward ! There are so many moments in the rest of their story that I’d love to have his perspective on ! And I do love that this saga from my adolescence still continues on after so much time !!
I’m one of the Twihards that was so disappointed when Ms. Meyer got betrayed and stepped away from Midnight Sun all those years ago. I understood and my heart broke for her, but I was also dying to read Edward’s POV, so I was beyond thrilled to find out that she’d finished it for us after all. Thank you, Stephenie, thank you so very much!
I found myself very easily fully immersed back into the world that I fell in love with back when Twilight came out. It was so interesting to read Edward’s side of things. Especially his inner conversations with his family. I also loved seeing how he could see what Alice would see. The story came alive for me once again in a whole new way. I found the way Charlie and Rene’s thoughts sounded to Edward very intriguing, much like Edward himself. And hearing the innocence of Jacob’s thoughts was adorable.
I’d be lying if I said that this was enough. I’m greedy, I want the rest of the story from Edward’s side! But, I am so incredibly grateful that the author has chosen to at least give us this much. She did not owe us anything, and I appreciate her!
Stephanie Meyer outdid herself! I am thoroughly and simultaneously depressed and impressed by Midnight Sun. Depressed at the thought that this will be the only book in Edward’s head. And impressed because I loved it even more than Twilight.
I loved being able to get to know the Cullens even more. I have a brand new respect and love for Esme. And the love I have for Bella expanded exponentially. The way that Edward sees her… I have no words.
I’m sure if you’ve read the Twilight saga that it’s redundant me saying “read Midnight Sun”… but, read Midnight Sun!
Still team Alice.
As soon as I found out Stephenie Meyer had finished the book with Edward’s perspective I pre-ordered it. I’d forgotten how long the Twilight books are and this is a huge book that I didn’t know when I’d find time to read (658 pages) along with my book reviewer obligations, so I used an Audible credit to buy the audiobook. It’s over 25 hours long so I listened to it while cleaning, driving, cooking, basically anytime I could. I think the audiobook made the boring parts where Edward is over analyzing and agonizing that he’s a “monster” a little more bearable than if I’d read the book because the narrator had so much feeling in his voice.
Yes, there’s the whole thing with Edward watching Bella sleep every night but we find out why–to protect her, as the girl does seem to attract dangerous situations (a van, a sexual predator to name a couple) like a magnet–and though it’s still creepy, we also find out Edward’s trying to desensitize himself or build up his resistance to Bella’s scent because he wants to find a way to be around her without hurting her as one of Alice’s visions showed.
Things I loved: Number one on that list is Alice!! I love her even more than I already did–she’d be a great friends (but I like Rosalie even less), Esme being a real mom to Edward, finding out more about the other members of the Cullen family, finding out how the family decided what to do about James and how Bella’s “accident” was staged to fit their story. I loved seeing how Alice’s visions worked and how she and Edward’s gifts worked together.
It was interesting to see Bella’s parents (Charlie and Renee) through Edward’s eyes and what he felt about their thoughts. We now know where Bella’s shield power came from. I also liked getting to hear Jacob’s thoughts, and hadn’t realized in Twilight that he didn’t believe the handed down tales of vampires or “cold ones” he heard from his father and grandfather. I found that interesting.
The only complaint I have about the hardback book is it isn’t the same size as the previous books.
