The first chapter was awesome!
I was so excited to read this version of Twilight, to get inside Edward’s head. And I loved the first chapter, but then he turned into a teenager.
One of the reasons I always loved the original Twilight was how romantic and old-fashioned Edward was.
I still enjoyed it, though.
Incredible. So much more than I could have excepted. I both savored and devoured it. I truly hope she’ll continue the series from Edward’s perspective! Though I knew the scenes, this book was so much more. I was never bored, it held me in rapt attention.
I love this flip of perspective!
Years in the making and waiting patiently for Edward’s POV was so worth the wait!
It brings back all the Love of the series and the characters.
I might be late to the party since Midnight Sun released a few weeks ago, but I loved the story from Edward’s point of view. I understand so much more now about why he did the things he did. I’ve always been Team Jake but this book definitely made me reconsider Edward! If you’re a Twilight fan, this is a must read!
I have been transported back about twelve years to a much younger version of myself and it was so wonderful. I remember when I was fully immersed in Twilight. I read the books countless times and this just took me right back to that like it was yesterday. I loved this from beginning to end. We always knew Edward was dramatic but he really is THE MOST dramatic. Just seeing all of these first moments from the other side was so eye opening. From Bella’s perspective, Edward is charming and knows exactly what he is doing. But the reality is that Edward is hot mess and is just as dazzled by Bella as she is by him. He’s as lost in the early days of their love story as she was. Honestly, so many of the iconic moments where Edward comes off to Bella as charming is really just him being overly curious and anxious and I love it. But in so many ways, this book is absolutely heartbreaking. Edward does not think highly of himself and it’s really upsetting how little he thinks of himself and nothing Bella says seems to get through that thick skull of his. I mean… if you’re reading this book… you know what’s coming up next in New Moon… and those thoughts have begun to fester in his head here at the end and it’s really not pretty. My heart really broke for him. But, I loved getting to experience Twilight again from this fresh perspective and getting to see some moments we weren’t privy to before. The climax at the end was definitely eye opening. To see how that all unfolded from the other side. And getting to spend more time with Alice and Jasper was great because I love them, especially Alice. And my appreciation for Emmett grew somehow. He is just SO GOOD and absolutely nothing phases him. Rosalie though… ugh… I will forever feel sorry for all that she dealt with… but that girl is so damn self centered it’s ridiculous. She does not give an inch. Not even to see her brother happy. But, all in all, this book was everything I hoped it would be and was worth the wait. Us Twilight fans were rewarded for our patience.
I was already a die hard Edward Cullen fan before this book released and Midnight Sun made me fall in love with him all over again. I loved reading it from his point of view and it was absolutely amazing!! This book definitely made my heart feel so good and I swooned from beginning to end.
As a huge Twilight fan I had to pick up this book when it came out. It was a good read and gave good insight into Edwards feelings! Maybe its because I am not 15 anymore but I found it a little bland. Typically I am not a fan of the male perspective book.
no amount of words can explain the feelings it gave me oh edward ur so stupid and cray for bells
Midnight Sun
Revisiting A Story 15 Years Later from a New Perspective
What a cool experience to come back to this story of Bella and Edward fifteen years later, and now from Edward’s perspective. I absolutely LOVED this! It made me remember why I enjoyed the original book, and how ingrained the characters became in my mind then; now quickly returned like old friends.
I knew the story, so there were no plot surprises of course, nor did I expect any, but I was surprised at how many new layers were added by getting this story from Edwards point-of-view. Reading this was fulfilling, delightful, and the exact bit of familiar comfort & escape I needed during this time of COVID; like a grilled cheese sandwich and cup of soup on a rainy day.
The experience of reading Twilight so many years ago was a huge catalyst in defining my own voice as a young adult author, so to read Midnight Sun now after publishing two of my own YA books, was a coming home and a way to pay homage to a work that inspired my own creativity, voice, and writing direction. Thank you for paving the way Stephenie Meyer!
For those who are not familiar with the love story of Edward and Bella, here’s a quick blurb on what you can expect from reading Midnight Sun:
Edward Cullen is an atypical vampire who abstains from the blood of people. He is broody and handsome and lonely. And then Bella Swan enrolls in the same high school that Edward attends. She is human, clumsy, and always in the wrong place at the wrong time. They are opposites with not much in common, but there is something between them nonetheless, something that defies all odds. We watch them fall in love, overcome the differences of their two opposing worlds, and try to escape fate that could be the end of them both.
I certainly don’t think you need to have read Twilight to enjoy Midnight Sun. It is a stand-alone story, but anyone who is a fan of the original work will also enjoy this retelling. Highly recommended for fans of the paranormal, Stephenie Meyer, vampire love stories, young adult literature and books with strong adult crossover appeal.
I was sooo excited for this to come out, and it could not have come at a better time, or perhaps earlier this year:) Either way I could not wait. I listened to this, and Jake Abel did a fantastic job. I loved that we finally got the whole book in Edward’s perspective, as he is my favorite perspective. This book was everything. I love all the books, but this one definitely hold a special place. Sooo good.
An Intricate and Arduous Look at Edward’s Mind and Soul…
I have to start by saying I loved the Twilight series, read all of the original books several times over. I even used the story as a catalyst to take my children, who were both tweens at the time of original publication, on a trip to the Olympic Peninsula where I subsequently fell in love with Forks and the surrounding areas. I was also one of the masses who greedily downloaded the unfinished pages of the original draft of this book after it was leaked online. I lamented along with many others when Stephanie Meyers vowed to never finish it, despite her love for having something from Edward’s point of view. And now so many years later, I rejoiced when I read Meyer’s was releasing “Midnight Sun” after most gave up on it ever being completed.
Because of my love for this series, I assumed when I downloaded it that I would sit and devour it like I had the others, moving from cover-to-cover in one sitting, lost in the fantasy of all things Vampire. However, much to my surprise and dismay, “Midnight Sun” tested my endurance far beyond anything I’ve read in years! And it will test yours too, not because it is uninteresting or boring in any way, but because it is written in a manner that definitely gives you the impression the Meyer’s did not enjoy or even want to finish writing it.
Now, before you Twihard level pounce and troll, do not misunderstand, “Midnight Sun” is a glorious and methodical journey through the intricate, often overwhelming emotional changes bombarding Edward as he navigates his growing closeness with Bella. Set in the tone of Edward’s mindset from their first meeting to their infamous prom “decision for now” ending, this book takes you point for point through the first fateful months of Bella and Edward’s relationship. It fills in many of the literary blanks that left you wanting and wondering in “Twilight” and fleshes out the initial cast of characters in much needed ways. This book, in short, is the viewpoint you didn’t know you needed. A viewpoint that takes you away from the very human needs and wants of Bella and overlays the complexity and seeming impossibilities of Edward’s very nature and how this nature relates to Bella. Sadly though, it’s done so without the subtle affectionate nature all of the other books are written with by the author. Instead, coming across colder and a bit clinical, like something written out of obligation rather than love for the story. Something that, at times, clouded the beauty of the story within.
Now, before you go and make another assumption and think this is going to be a negative review think again. In fact, I’ve read many of the poor reviews of this book; reviews that complain about how boring, tedious, and slow it is, and I have to say, it is FAR from that! Yes the pace within this book is painfully slow, exceedingly logical, and almost Spock-like in its seeming lack of emotional breadth. However, that is exactly as it should be with something written from Edward’s perspective. After all, Edward is not human; he does not act, react, or process anything around him as a human does. Therefore, it is only natural that the prose within the book reflects the way in which he would think, see, feel, and relate to things. Where “Twilight” was quick and fidgety, “Midnight Sun” is analytical and attentive. Where Bella was emotionally sure and trusting, Edward is cautious and uncertain. The methodical cadence present within this book expertly matches the way in which Edward thinks and feels, and is a testament to Meyer’s ability to shift her writing style to match the personalities of her characters.
Despite the lack of literary love from Meyer’s present here, you need to stay the course to fully understand both Edward and Bella fully. And if you can endure it, embrace the colder writing and Edward’s point of view completely, in all of his unyielding, agnsty, Edward-ness consternation; you will be richly rewarded with a lusciously full and vibrant picture of them both.
As I stated at the beginning of this review, if you normally devour books like I do this one will test you. It is a book designed to be almost clinically observed, just as Edward observes the world around him, not demolished instantly like a cliff diving Bella looking for emotional relief. If you can adapt to the pace needed to fully absorb and appreciate the story within you will fall so deeply back in love with this saga you will beg Meyer’s to write the other installments from Edward’s point of view too! I for one would love, love, LOVE that!
I thoroughly enjoyed Edwards telling of his story! I enjoyed the back story and history of the family…
I loved this book! I read it 6 times in one week just to get lost in the words again! I enjoyed Edward’s point of view much more than Bella’s, he made the world seem funnier, not as gloomy as Bella’s. If you loved the Twilight books then I definitely recommend this book. If you have never read the Twilight Sage, what are you waiting for?!?! Go get a copy of Twilight and dive in right away!
Ok this book sucks. I was hoping that it would be better, but it’s ridiculous. The story is once again weak, the characters are shallow, and the plot is thin. It’s page after page of Edward complaining about Bella’s smell, and that’s all. Then suddenly he’s in love? And when they get together they don’t talk about anything, but of course, it’s true love and eternal and blah blah blah …
Just no. I’m sorry, I know the whole world is against me here– so what can I Say?
Yuk.
Really best book in the Twilight saga..
Brings to the Twilight University in the Edward’s perspective… Very much great book..
Along with all Twihards everywhere, I loved every minute of Midnight Sun. Let yourself be sucked right back into your middle-school mindset and experience all the angst of #TeamEdward v. #TeamJacob. Bella is much more fun to read about when you’re not in her head, and you’re going to love all the flack Mike Newton gets–it’s a Mike Newton hate fest. Don’t think about it too much, and just enjoy it!
I LOVED IT! I think that its AMAZING that the author wanted to show a view of TWILGHT from Edwards perspective. Its a REAL page turner.
Sun made this book sparkle! 5 stars
I will always be a Twilighter! Years ago when this author posted Midnight Sun after it was leaked online, I read it. I thought it was some of her best writing, and I hoped one day she would finish it and publish it. I was ecstatic when she announced she finished and was publishing Midnight Sun. I was not disappointed in this book in the least! This book made me love Edward even more than I already did, although he did annoy me at times! Having his take was riveting, fascinating, heartbreaking and heart-soaring. I gained respect for Emmett and Jasper that I did not have before. There was a place towards the end where the pace slowed down, but I did understand why this author was giving such detailed descriptions and minutiae. Then she had to go write something that made me so mad at her that I gasped out loud and yelled, because she just loves to punish Edward. Then it felt to me like it abruptly ended, and I couldn’t remember if Twilight ended that abruptly! Despite the few flaws in this book, I still loved it, highlighted a ton of quotes, was grateful for it, was grateful to be back in this world and felt like the sun shone on this book and made it sparkle!
3.5 stars
If you enjoyed the Twilight series, you’re going to love this glimpse into Edward’s head. Midnight Sun ticks all the boxes that the original series ticked, and the reader is now privy to more exposition and details that Bella wasn’t aware of. It’s a nostalgic blast from the past, which is kind of nice in this current moment.
