This book is a POV from Edward Cullen. His mind and persona are so very different from Bella’s. At times you will wonder if he is truly the charming vampire, we remember from Bella’s POV. This novel is much darker and more sinister…but remember, Edward is a vampire who has lived for over 100 years and he has found his mate! So, dark thoughts will be abounding when others try to take her from him, interfere with his perceptions of her, and as he goes from obsession to love, you will notice a huge difference occurring. Also, you will feel the protectiveness he feels for her~ It will give us a perspective into the lives and minds of the Cullens and some other vampires. It will show just how deeply they love their mates, as humans and vampires. I love the new POV from Edward…it will make things much different when rewatching the movies~
Midnight Sun was a difficult book for me to read. The beginning is filled with Edward second-guessing himself and overanalyzing situations. While I know being over cautious is necessary for him when he first meets Bella, it still felt like filler. I almost gave up, until it was suggested I switch over to the audiobook. Jake Abel was the perfect narrator for Midnight Sun, and his take on Edward brought me back into the fold.
Once Edward and Bella began to know one another, the plot picked up the pace. The story was less about Edward overanalyzing and more about relationship development and building up the characters. It’s been a while since I read Twilight, but I remember wanting to see more involvement from Edward’s family. Midnight Sun provided all I needed to know about the rest of the Forks coven. Readers will experience an in depth look at their powers and motivations as Stephenie Meyer reveals their family dynamics and relationships.
Readers will also have the opportunity to learn more about Edward’s past. I enjoyed learning about Edward and his faults through his history versus the constant back and forth inside his mind. Granted, in any new relationship, there is a sense of doubt that clouds judgment, but it was taken to an extreme with Edward. Yes, I know he is a vampire and things can turn on a dime, but it could have scaled back and still provided the sense of danger that was required.
Even though this was a struggle, I still recommend Midnight Sun to fans of Twilight. I’m one of those people who loves to see all angles of a situation to better understand it, and Midnight Sun gave me this opportunity.
I loved the added perspective I got from this book!
It felt like a nostalgic re-read of Twilight. I enjoyed it but I wasn’t devouring it like I did the original.
I limited my reading time with this novel, 15 minutes. Sometimes, I met my goal sometimes I overshot it by a wide margin. I treated the book like a piece of coveted chocolate ice cream pie. I chose the irresistible slice and forced myself to consume tiny nibbles in a single encounter. More or less a book diet! Although I read the entire trilogy prior, I wanted to spend another couple of months, not days or weeks, reading the breathtaking iconic love story from Edward’s view. Reading the last page left me yearning for more!
Jumping back into the Twilight universe after all this time brought back a lot of memories. Reading it in Edward’s POV was even better. It was worth the 13 year wait for this book. I really do wish that we would get all the books in his point of view, but I know that will not happen. Maybe one day we will get more books about other characters. If you enjoyed Twilight you will enjoy this one, but if you are Team Edward you will get another look into the mind of the mind reader.
Great for fans of Twilight. I loved seeing everything through Edward’s perspective
I have read many reviews and some actually make my eyes roll. I have many issues with this book, let’s start with the price that was raised, yet again about a week after it went live and levelled off, in Canada at almost $20 for an ebook Ridiculous! At that price, it should have been free of proofing errors but sadly was not! Then, there’s the issues with the story. Some readers have simply minimized the completely different story by using the excuse that the story is Edward’s version of events. Come on! The story is told completely differently. We aren’t talking about small things that could have been misconstrued due to the story teller we are talking about events that happen in a completely different time frame, or place! In the original book, Bella and Edward first talk about what he is when they walk behind the school, into the woods and Edward rides Bella to the top of the mountain. * Spoiler: in this book the first discussion is in the car on the drive to Bella’s house, then a few days later in greater detail when they driver to Edward’s meadow and they both walk a 5 the mile trail to the meadow. How is that perception? and what was the point of changing every event? Edward pulling himself away Bella on her bed, in her bedroom, yelling NO, telling her he can’t loose control – in this version that happens again, in the meadow and when he yells no and pulls himself back he ends up at the end of the meadow. It has nothing to do with perception, the story is different, period! Why? This goes well beyond changing small bits to accommodate another’s point of view, events are told in a different time frame completely, changing dates, times, places where events took place and how and when – that only frustrated me because it didn’t make any sense. I am a fan. I read all the books, back to back. I have watched the movies many times. I was aware that the first version of this book was stolen and released on the internet which I never read as I, too, hoped one day the author would try again but this book just disappointed me. Why is it so incredibly verbose. Why does the author use 20 words to express a 5 word sentence. I continued to lose interest over and over. I kept screaming at the author: ‘get to the point’. The author would start to describe a familiar event in the book and instead break off and go in 5 different directions and 20-30 pages before coming back and finishing the original thought. I would not have pushed through, if not for my love of this author and this series. I actually fell asleep, several times or had to close my ipad. For me, this book is a huge disappointment. I will post on goodreads and put the edits under the notes section. You’d think at almost 20 bucks, it would be free of proof errors and words that not inly don’t make sense but aren’t found via google or any dictionary on the internet.
I cannot say enough just how much I loved Midnight Sun. I absolutely loved it. The wait for Edward Cullen’s story was so worth it. Midnight Sun allowed me to fall back into the wonderful and mysterious world of Twilight all once again, and most importantly, I got to fall in love with Edward Cullen and the Cullen family all over again. I think I loved Midnight Sun even more than Twilight. Blasphemy, I know, but it was absolutely wonderful to be able to finally read Edward’s side of the story, and to discover all of the changes that he went through while falling in love with a human whose blood he lusted after so. Wow!
If you are a Twilight fan, like myself, you will not be disappointed at all. Go read Midnight Sun. Stephenie Meyer did a great job with this one.
If you’re a Twilight Fan, even if you’re already read all the books, I’d still recommend this one. Being in Edward’s POV does lend an interesting take. Different voice, more insight into him—a very sensitive, chivalrous guy.
There’s also a different spin on the action and eventual covering up of the action; the movies don’t show some of this at all and I do not remember all of it as being in the original books.
This made for an entertaining listen while I worked for a few days. The narrator is smooth, and I’d absolutely listen to more from him.
4.5 stars for both: ebook and audiobook.
As a lifelong Twilight fan, I was both very excited and nervous to read this book. Overall, it was a good book, but don’t expect it to be the same level of perfection as Twilight is. I have ultimately decided that I prefer Edward as the mysterious, charming (albeit often moody and brooding) vampire that I encountered in the original series. It is impossible for him to be mysterious when you are literally inside his head and because of that he was significantly less charming. The best parts of the books were undoubtedly those which did not feature at all in the original series (for instance, flashbacks from his past) that give the reader a fuller perspective of the characters and story. Although it was intriguing to read the same beloved story from both angles, I think I would have preferred a book about Carlisle’s past or Renesme’s future – stories which don’t feature at all in the original series.
Honestly, I loved this venture back into the Twilight world that I loved so much when it first came out. This was so much more than the original little short story that got leaked back when the author said she would first write it. I enjoyed so much all the different aspects of things told from Edward’s perspective. It’s been so long since I actually read the books, so there are some things that I wondered if actually they were more based around things in the movie as opposed to the book, but I still was okay with it as I loved it. It was a little long towards the end for me though. Which makes sense since I do tend to zone out at the end of the movie once the bad vampires start their bit. But I had to finish it anyway just to see where it went, and I wasn’t disappointed. Because it was basically just the same story, I only gave it 4 stars instead of the 5 I think I gave the original book.
I, admittedly, was a huge fan of Twilight when it came out. I was not a crazy fan, but I did enjoy it. It was my first vampire novel, having stuck almost exclusively to SciFi up to that point. I was thrilled when Ms Meyer announced this concept of writing from Edward’s POV. I was so sad when it was leaked and she had to step away from it. I’m glad she was able to compete it.
Seeing the scenes you know from a different POV and what happened off stage brings a whole new level of understanding to the plot. It enriches the plot a great deal. I find myself both liking Edward more as well as being more annoyed with him. He was the first male protagonist I read that was this self sacrificing without thought for what his counterpart may desire. I really appreciate the look into his thought process leading into book two. This makes his decisions seem much less impulsive. This is a great addition to the saga.
Edward is amazing, kind and just… ugh!
I love him! Plus, Bella is so sweet and amazing too! This book will answer a lot of your questions and make you understand why Edward was so adamant to leave Bella despite loving her more than anything.
Anyway, I just wanted to say that Stephanie Meyer is my queen and I happily bow down to her! She can make me laugh, cry and come back for more no matter what she writes!
I can’t wait to read the next book from the amazing and lovely Edward Cullen’s point of view. He is murderous, beautiful, kind and perfect! Bella is selfless, kind, beautiful and every bit as perfect as Edward.
If you are as big a fan as the Twilight series as I am, then this is a must read!!!
Edward and Bella
I’ve been waiting forever for this book my inner teenager screamed in delight knowing that this book was finally coming out. I honesty thought that this day would never come. I loved reading this, but I didn’t necessarily love this book. I loved being in Edward Cullen’s head and it already filled so many blank points about him and Bella’s story. Yes, this is a Twilight retelling, but it was also much longer than Twilight and so much was expanded on. So I have to admit this book is a great addition to the series. Also I’m still lost to why Edward fell so deeply in love with Bella. I loved the flashbacks. We got to know more about Edwards early days, more about Carlisle, how Alice and Jasper joined the family and other interesting things. Then the ending with it’s sad undertones and a much better understanding of Edward’s emotions which we know will lead to all those blank pages in New Moon.
I have always loved the Twilight Saga. This one was way worth the wait. Getting to read the story from Edwards point of view put a new perspective on the story. You are able to understand his struggles a lot better. I hope she continues the rest of the story line in his point of view it would be interesting to read.
I very much so enjoyed this version of Twilight from Edward’s POV. I got this book as a birthday gift. I’d recommend it to fans of the Twilight saga. This is the sort of book I enjoy. I hope there will be more books like this.
“I could see the effects of the light refracting off my skin shining prism-like,” Edward describes his diamond-like skin and how light refracts, without using the word sparkle.
“So how was it possible that the sun was rising now, in the middle of my midnight?” An excellent way to use the title of the book in the story.
A mention of Persephone and a pomegranate gives the cover image meaning.
And there’s a mention of it being twilight, the time when vampires come out to play, when it’s the safest time of day.
totally loved reading Edwards’ side of this story and how his point of view differed to Bellas’side of the story
i would recomend this to everyone
Worth the read if you are a twilight fan just everything from Edward’s side.
I never enjoyed reading when I was younger and in school. I guess reading because you have to versus reading for fun are two entirely different things. I read Twilight when it was first released, and the series is what started my love of reading. I’ve read hundreds of books since falling in love with Edward Cullen, and was excited to dive back into the world of Forks and discover how Edward truly felt when he met Bella.
Midnight Sun is the first book in the Twilight series told from Edward’s point of view. We know from the other books that Edward struggled with his feelings for Bella, and that he was terrified he would eventually hurt her. Edward desperately wanted Bella to remain human, and he worried about what would happen to her soul if she was ever changed. Midnight Sun is a lengthy book, so there’s obviously a good bit of Edward’s inner dialogue stressing about these struggles. However, you can’t help but enjoy seeing everything from Edward’s perspective. There is a lot of new material and a number of scenes that are completely fresh and different than the ones we’ve read from Bella’s POV. We get to witness more of the closeness Edward shares with his family and understand how important the Cullens are to one another. I grew to love Alice, Jasper and even Emmett more than I did before. I’ve never been a fan of Rosalie, and that certainly didn’t change here.
This series will always be special to me because it opened up my imagination and pushed me to love reading. I have found more pleasure and entertainment from reading books while getting lost between the pages and in the different worlds, than I could have ever imagined. If you loved the Twilight series, you will love this book too and cherish the short time back in Forks.
