This first book in The Mortal Heat Series by Laurel Night was a very entertaining supernatural romantic adventure story. Enthralled with Todd one of the special individuals from the band The Mortal Heat, Em falls deeply in love while her best friend Lucy, who has the hots for Mick, attempts to find out why Em is so enthralled while looking so very poorly health-wise. The question of vampires is quickly raised and appears to be the answer to the many symptoms Em is demonstrating but are they really the answer that Lucy seeks? This and many other questions will be raised and answered by the time the reader finishes this fast-paced book. I am really looking forward to reading the other books in this series. This is a voluntary review of this book.
Vampires were fleeing their home planet and have walked among us for centuries. While at a concert, Lucy and Emily got involved in a a group of them that had formed a rockband/worked at the bar the band played at called Midnight Sun. Emily falls head over heals with Todd and starts showing illness and Lucy will do everything to protect her dearest friend and in doing so, falls in love with Mick another vampire. I found it a nice, easy read. The characters, human and vampire alike, are likeable. The desperation for Lucy to help her friend comes through, the mating procedure makes it as of right now suitable for teenage and up in my opinion. It is practically the same as giving a hickey (and that is where the myth of the vampire comes from) very PG13 but still enjoyable to the older readers as well. We are not going to comment how old I am lol but old enough to know that no mater the age, you should read it.
Book review of Midnight Sun by Laurel Night
I am not a fan the sci-fi/alien twist on vampires, for me it is just a preference, though Laurel Night did it pretty well in this book. This books was well written with interesting characters, an intriguing plot and had great theme elements through out. Like: friendship; triumph in the face of adversity; Love; loss and letting go and true love conquering all. Then there is the character growth that allows the relationships to expand beyond earlier limitations. Some may have some issues with how some of the “relationships” develop out of and maybe the lack of development in what really seemed the be the pivotal relationship.
This is the first book in a series and as spends a lot of time with world building and character development as one would hope and the main conflict is handled how many readers like to see.

I am torn on this one. 3.5 but I am rounding up. On the one hand, I liked the sci-fi/alien twist on vampires. It is not one I see as often (The Replacement series by Sierra-Luebke off the top of my head, but that is way darker) and it was done pretty well in this book. It did read more like a fantasy than sci-fi so take it with a grain of salt, but for what it is it worked. I liked the themes of friendship, and true love conquering all and triumph in the face of adversity. Love and loss and letting go, character growth that allows relationships to expand beyond earlier limitations.
What I didn’t like was that I didn’t see that true love developed in one of the key relationships. The reader is told it is there, but what is shown appears to be an icky date rape situation where the girl is drugged out of her mind and doesn’t even know what is going on. This was not the MCs story though, and her relationship does not have these overtures so I am willing to give Purity War a shot as what has been built so far of the world and this relationship seems to have very different challenges.
This is the first book in a series and as spends a lot of time with world building and character development. It is a fast read and what was there did seem to serve a purpose. The main conflict in the book was resolved at the end, but some other huge issues were opened and I kinda felt like it ended just as things were really getting interesting.
Midnight Sun: A New Adult Urban Fantasy by Laurel Night is a wonderful story to read. As I start reading this book I’m thinking it’s another vampire series a lot like the others I’ve read, and don’t get me wrong I love vampire books. However…..This was not at ALL like other vampire books. This was definitely vampires with a huge twist. So unique!! The world that the author has created is fantastic. The characters are great. It kept me guessing from start to reveal. I finished this book and went straight for book 2 and finished it in a day. Such a fun syfy/vampire read!!
Ohh I was not expecting a different take on vampires but I loved it! I can’t wait to read book two. Lucy and Emily’s detective work with Mick and Todd being “humans”, I totally got sucked in into this book, pun intended lol
I was so into this book I couldn’t put it down. The storyline and characters are perfect and it’s such a unique take on Vampires.
I am reading Purity War now and hoping things work out for…… no not going to spoil Midnight Sun you will just have to read it yourself.
Midnight Sun
Laurel Night has a new series, Mortal Heat. This is book one, and it is really good! Cannot wait for the next book!
So I read Midnight Sun pretty quickly, it had a nice flow and good story line and the potential to be an amazingly epic book…it just didn’t WOW me. I loved the new spin on “Vampire” and it really intrigued me and I hope that it gets better from here because I do plan on reading the other books in the series, because like I said it has a good flow and I hate leaving things unfinished in my head.

I love to read stories about vampires and rockstars. I thought this one would be a great package deal, sadly i struggled with this book. I tried repeatedly to pick it up and finish it, by coming back after a while in hope to get invested in the story but sadly i couldn’t. I found that most of the story was about two friends prepping up for clubbing and that nothing really happened in the first 30% of the book. The story picked up afterward and so it wasn’t a DNF for me. I can’t say that it was a bad story because it was not, but it only just wasn’t for me. You should still give it a try and make your own opinion about this book.

Good read with a twist!
I received an ARC from the writer and offer my opinion freely.
I expected a vampire novel. The book started with al the ingredient. Pale beautiful man, partying the night away, a rockband. But this book surprised me. Not only because the story twisted into a plot I didn’t expect, but also because it is well written and funny at times.
Recommended.
Emily and Lucy loved the romp called Mortal Heat so they went to there concerts. Todd and Emily hooked up but when she got back from the two being together Emily always had puncture wounds n her neck. So Lucy kept getting a bad feeling about the group. She decided that they were vampires because of the neck wounds and they slept during the day. Lucy and Emily were junior reporters at the paper they worked at so she kept digging to found for about vampires. They made Todd lose control and found out that they were aliens and the puncture wounds I the neck were a form of mating ritual for them. They were having problems with the pairing but it was finally successful. Todd lost his alien form because of the pairing.
This was a pretty interesting book, not my usual read but it did keep me engaged.
I got this book from Storyorigin for an honest review.
I love a good vampire book . . . and this is not it. The characters are one-dimensional and thoroughly unlikable. The book spends an inordinate amount of time talking about their make-up and outfits for their club nights instead of moving the story along. I really struggled to finish. I was really looking forward to a new take on vampires but this book was a definite let-down.

Vimpiri… Vimpire? Vampire!!!
Laurel Night’s „Midnight Sun“ (The Mortal Heat Series Vol. 1) is a funny, whimsical take on the vampire myth. Emily and Lucy are roommates and BBF, even working for the same company. As they decide to go to their favourite band concert, they live change forever. At first it seems a fairly harmless romance and then the reader gets thrown a curved ball after another and all thoughts of “just this one chapter” are blown to the window, as events develop in more and more whimsical and strange ways.
Laurel Night has created a vampire/science-fiction hybrid that is fresh and funny and will undoubtably appeal to YA looking for vampire romantic with a twist, and some good insights on the meaning of friendship.
This is a fantastic read! Well written this thrilling read grabbed me and dragged me into the story from the very start! An Urban fantasy with a mix of suspense, intrigue and romance and a different take on vampires, I Loved the characters and the chemistry and friendship and am eagerly waiting to read the next book!
An interesting story of alien rock stars. Romantic at times, with an ending that leaves you wanting more of the story. Which is a good thing since there is a sequel.
Lucy and her friend Emily have tickets to go see a rock group. Emily catches the eye of the lead singer of the group and he gives them back stage passes. Emily is immediately drawn to him and starts to out of character. Lucy is worried when she goes somewhere alone with him and she comes back out of it. Emily tells her that they have been invited to another show the next day.
Lucy is worried about Emily. The more time she spends with this guy Todd, the more she changes. She notices more marks on her neck. With everything going with Emily, Lucy finds herself drawn to Mick. She is not sure what to do.
Things will gets out of control, making Lucy look at herself and everything she thought she knew.
When Emily makes a decision that will risk her life. Lucy and Mick will work together to get Emily back.
Will Lucy be able to save her friend and realize her true feeling for Mick/
This was an very interesting read. It is a unique take on vampires. This is not my typical read, but I truly enjoyed it and am looking forward to more in this series.
I received an ARC copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.
