From the USA Today bestselling author of Midnight Captive, the latest Killer Instincts novel is “off-the-charts-hot”* romantic suspense that takes readers into the heart of an enigmatic mercenary… Out of all the stone-cold mercenaries in Jim Morgan’s black ops organization, Derek “D” Pratt is the most intimidating. He is tight-lipped and covered in tattoos, and even the other guys on his team … even the other guys on his team are afraid to ask him about his past. D’s been off the grid for years, but after his teammate Sullivan is mistakenly captured in his place, D is forced to come out of hiding and face his demons.
When D lands in Mexico, he’s ready to risk everything to save his friend. To complicate matters, Sofia Amaro, a feisty doctor whom D had a one-night stand with months ago, has tracked him down. And in an instant she’s unintentionally caught up in his life-threatening rescue mission.
Now D must extract not one but two people from the most violent world he’s ever encountered. And one of them is carrying his child…

Midnight Revenge is the seventh installment in Elle Kennedy’s romantic suspense series titled: Killer Instincts. As of February 2017, I am officially caught up in this series, yay!!! Wait…I’m all caught up, so now we wait. I’m thinking I should have read slower.
Midnight Revenge focuses on hardcore mercenary: D (Derek) and Mexico-based doctor: Sofia. D is an @sshole through and through but you know what they say about mean people. The meaner a person is, the more wounded he/she probably is on the inside. D is no different and I enjoyed watching Sofia’s sad but interesting journey to D’s vulnerability. There’s no doubt that he remains deadly and a complete @ss to his team but readers now see another layer to him. This story had tons of action and suspense that kept the pages turning and just enough sexy moments to keep a smile on my face. The side story in Midnight Revenge is the follow up to the end of the last book Midnight Captive when Sullivan identified himself as D. His parts had my stomach churning and left my gorgeous new dark purple-painted nails in an absolute mess. Lesson learned: Never take ownership of someone else’s name in public. You never what debt that person owes.
This book was incredible and I am kicking myself for not diving into earlier!!! Derek and Sofia are mature, reasonable, damaged, and emotional. That last one, it doesn’t seem to fit, but as their story unfolds, you slowly see how their emotions have been driving them for years. Acquaintances who express their passion one night, their story becomes a whole lot more. I cried, really cried, for the pain and anguish Derek and Sullivan endured. I ached, total heart ache, for Sofia and Liam. Yes, Derek and Sofia are our main couple, but there are undercurrents with Sullivan and Liam that drive this story, and end without resolution.
As Sofia discovers Derek, who he is, how he feels, why he feels, it was a revelation to me as a reader as well. Derek hasn’t, really, really, hasn’t had a good life, and he kept making decisions to solidify that. It isn’t easy to turn that around, and he really doesn’t want to, so why do it. The moment, that pinpoint in time, almost too late, that clarifies things for him was a true sunshine breaking through the clouds made me weep and laugh in happiness for him. When Sofia realizes his change of heart, when he tells her in the way only Derek can, well they had me goofy smiling that they were finally, finally, getting their HEA
This story is packed with intrigue, twists and turns, action and violence. It defines a romantic suspense, as our couple get to really know each other in the midst of all these goings on. I haven’t read any of the other books in this series, I will be rectifying that soon, and had no trouble following along. I am off to get the next book in the series now, because, well, there is a couple on tap, and another that needs some resolution.
Derek’s story was heart breaking, the resiliency of this character is amazing. Sofia’s character is no slouch either. I love how the author writes these flawed characters who have overcome horrors, but still have their humanity. Great book.
I loved this series! And I was particularly interested to read Derek’s story! He was such an interesting character in the series that you couldn’t help but want to know more. Great action-packed book! Strong female characters who always find their perfect match!
