Can one develop feelings for the man you swore to see hanged? That’s just what Rebecca fears she has done in this Gothic Regency romance. After her brother’s mysterious death, Rebecca Hunter vows to expose the man she believes responsible: Mr. Lewis Browning—known by the locals as the Midnight Devil and by Rebecca as her new guardian.Summoned to his reclusive country estate to await her London … his reclusive country estate to await her London season, Rebecca plans her own secret investigation among the darkened corridors of the mysterious Greybourne Hall. Yet Lewis Browning is not as she once imagined, and his motivation is horribly unclear. Recurrent nightmares and Rebecca’s restless feelings are further complicated by the shadow of her mother’s prior descent into madness and wondering if she, too, will follow the same heartbreaking path.
Even as midnight rides, strange injuries, and further murders lead back to Mr. Browning, Rebecca can’t ignore the subtle turn of her heart. Has she fallen for the man she swore would pay for her brother’s death? And moreover, can she trust him with her uncertain future?

Rebecca Hunter has had so much to deal with in the past few years. Her mother’s struggle with mental illness and her subsequent death; her brother Jacob’s fatal accident that was likely murder; and then, being sent with her Aunt Jo to live with the man that many believe is responsible for Jacob’s death.
What follows is a story filled with mystery, intrigue, and the tantalizing start of a romance between Rebecca and her guardian Lewis Browning. The very strong attraction between the two of them soon becomes obvious and their first kiss simply took my breath away!
Set in the Regency era, this book reminds me of the gothic romances by Victoria Holt and Mary Stewart that I fell in love with many years ago. Greybourne Manor with its many rooms and dark passageways; mysterious midnight rides and a hero who has been referred to as the Midnight Devil; and the young heroine who can’t determine her true feelings for her guardian.
‘Lewis Browning. What was he to me? My guardian? My coconspirator? My brother’s murderer? Or something else entirely?’
Midnight on the River Grey is the first book that I’ve read by Abigail Wilson but it won’t be my last. She has proven herself to be a wonderful historical fiction author and I look forward to enjoying more of her books in the future!
A review copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley and via JustRead Publicity Tours. I voluntarily chose to share my review and all views and opinions expressed are my own.
This was an interesting read with some great suspense and mystery as every character had something to hide.
I liked the main character, but towards the end, she took some huge risks that just didn’t seem to be in character. I think Mr.Browning was my favorite character, and he seemed to stay in character.
I was disappointed again that no faith theme is in this book. It’s really a General Fiction Read, not a Christian Fiction one.
The plot is interesting, lots of characters to follow, and some nice twists. Though I had figured much out far before Rebecca did.
If you liked her first book, you will love this one. It had a Jane Eyre sort of feel to it.
I received this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
I received an Advanced Reader Copy of Midnight on the River Grey. I didn’t read it immediately because I wanted to savor its presence before getting lost in the mystery created by Abigail Wilson.
Rebecca Hunter has arrived at the mysterious Greybourne Hall, newly dependent on its owner Lewis Browning after her brother Jacob’s death. Since Mr. Browning may have had something to do with what happened to Jacob, Rebecca is reluctant to stay but decides to take the opportunity to look for answers. As she does so, she is faced with more questions regarding her past, her future, and the people around her.
A suspenseful mix of historical romance and mystery with a gothic touch, Midnight on the River Grey captured me with the first word and only released me after I had devoured the last.
Historical gothic mystery
I loved this book. It reminded me of old gothic novels that I read as a teenager. It had mystery and suspense. I can’t wait to read A. Wilson’s next novel.
Once I read In the Shadow of Croft Towers earlier this year, I could not wait to get Abigail Wilson’s second novel.
I adored it! Midnight on the River Grey is a multi-layered historical filled with mystery and romance, and the atmospheric quality of the setting is astounding.
Midnight on the River Grey keeps the reader guessing, turning pages as we follow strong-willed Rebecca, who’s mourning her older brother’s death, supposedly at the hands of Lewis Browning, her elusive guardian. The uncertainty and sparks that fly from their interactions makes for an amazing story!
As Rebecca struggles to unravel the mystery of her brother’s death, she also must figure out what’s happening at Greybourne Hall–and in her heart toward her guardian.
Abigail Wilson’s writing jumps off the page. The scenes are so vividly written and atmospheric I felt like I was there, traipsing the halls with Rebecca, under the glaring eyes of Lewis’s family portraits. The romance grows naturally and sweetly, and the ending was a shocker.
I love this author’s voice and way with words, and how she weaves mystery and romance so seamlessly. I’m eager for her next story! Highly recommend for fans of regency romance and historical romance. (And this fan votes for a story for Torrington please!)
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
There’s nothing that gives me delightful shivers down my spine more than a gothic Regency which includes old creaky mansions, mysterious midnight rides, enigmatic characters, and secrets. In her beautifully descriptive poetic prose, author Abigail Wilson pens a twisty novel that will keep you madly turning those pages to get at the truth. With engaging characters and just the right amount of romance, Midnight on the River Grey is one not to be missed!
*I received a complimentary copy of this book from Thomas Nelson via NetGalley. I was not required to write a positive review and all opinions expressed are entirely my own.*
Midnight on the River Grey was another mysteriously enticing novel from Abigail Wilson! This book was intriguing and peeked my curiosity as the characters endeavored to make sense of a variety of obscure circumstances and murders. This plot kept me guessing and searching for answers until the end!
Midnight on the River Grey is second release written by Abigail Wilson. I enjoyed her first book, In the Shadow of Croft Towers and this does not disappoint. It tells the story of Rebecca Hunter, who has lost her family and has to live with a cousin. She, also, is determined to solve the death of her late brother. Will she find what she is looking for?
Midnight on the River Grey is a pretty good read. In addition to the romance, I liked the mystery and suspense surrounding this tale. There were, also, scenes that involves danger, action, and adventure. I personally did not find it predictable at all. Which I found to be refreshing.
I am giving Midnight on the River Grey four and a half stars. I look forward to the next book from Abigail Wilson in the near future. I recommend this one to readers who enjoy reading clean historical fiction, especially those from the Regency era.
I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.
2:02 am. This is the exact time I finished Abigail Wilson’s sophomore novel Midnight on the River Grey. And coming from a woman who prizes her sleep just as much as her dark chocolate, this is a huge credit to the author. But seriously, this novel! With its engaging plot, heart-sighing romance, and hard-to-guess mystery, I’m going to be in a story-fog for quite some time!
From the first page, the heroine, Rebecca, impressed me with her grit. Her brother Jacob’s mysterious death ignited a desire within her to discover the truth at all costs. Her drive and determination are admirable but what I adored most about her was her kind yet discerning heart. She’d experienced so much pain within her lifetime, but refused to be discouraged. On top of everything else, the man the entire town suspected to be bear the blame of her brother’s death is also the one she needed the most to help navigate the hazy situations that arisen during her stay in the country.
Mr. Browning is shrouded in secrets, and while his guarded nature makes me curious about his involvement in Jacob’s passing, I can’t help but like the man. He treats Rebecca with admiration and respect while giving her space to be herself on his large estate.
The romance in this story is organic and unforced which are crucial elements for me when reading novels. And while I LOVE this time period, I’m a huge fan of this author’s storytelling. Her voice is unique and fresh. I’m so glad Abigail Wilson stepped onto the regency era scene, and I can’t wait for her next story.
