As the janitor in a haunted house, single mom Abby Jenkins has many contacts with the living and the dead in the small Pacific Northwest town of Sunset Cove, which puts her in a perfect position to solve local mysteries. Or so she thinks. Hired to find diamonds hidden in a haunted manor she gets help from a Viking ghost with existential issues. Will she survive? This book contains bad-boy ghosts, … ghosts, mischievous magic, and a woman who knows what she wants in a Viking hayloft.

Midnight Magic by Jo-Ann Carson is the first tale in A Ghost & Abby Mystery series. I thought Midnight Magic was a lighthearted magical story with a cast of unique characters. Abby Jenkins is thirty two years old, a widow and has three young children. Abby can speak with ghosts, but she does not want others to know about her gift. If Abby wants to keep her secret, she should really be more discreet since Sunset Cove is a small town. I wish the author had provided more details on the characters (like last names). I wanted them to be fleshed out a bit more as well. I liked the author’s conversational writing style which made Midnight Magic easy to read. It is a short story that contains under 190 pages (the rest is excerpts from other books). The story is written in the first person point-of-view which allows us to be privy to Abby’s thoughts. I was not a fan of the foul language and the amount of time devoted to intimate relations (too explicit). I did not feel that Midnight Magic needed either of these elements. I did enjoy the sarcastic banter, but the story felt incomplete to me. To get the necessary answers, I would need to pick up the next book in the series which I was not compelled to do. Midnight Magic is an upbeat paranormal mystery with a haunted hall, a vintage Viking, potent potions, and magical mayhem.
This book has everything! Ghosts, guardian spirits, warlocks, bloodsuckers, howling hounds, bats, rats, spiders, a haunted mansion, an ancient grimoire, a spunky private investigator, a super sexy Viking, the inclusion of two of my favorite characters from the Gambling Ghosts series (Azalea and goth-goddess Joy) plus a divinely wicked smile-until-your-cheeks-hurt humor. Loved tagging along with Abby Jenkins as she solves her first case and gets more than she could ever have imagined from her client “Ms. Power Suit” Charisma Dubois. Loved everything about this book and can’t wait to read more in this series!
I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was a witty, fun read! Abby Jenkins works as a janitor in a haunted house to provide for her three children. Abby, also, has the ability to see the dead. Trying to expand and make a name for herself as a detective, Abby takes on a client, Charisma Dubois, who wants her to find a stash of diamonds in a house she inherited.
There is a catch, the house is haunted by a draugr, likened to vampires and feeds off the blood of humans. Abby, along with her ghost boyfriend and partner, Eric Eklund, set out to find the diamonds. In doing so, they find themselves making a bargain with the draugr, who has plans of their own. Eric makes a deal with a witch, something that is forbidden to do. Lots of magic involved!
Unputdownable, because it was so good!
Once in a while, I pick up a book that’s so much fun to read and that I just can’t put it down until I reach the last chapter that ends on a surprised ending. Midnight Magic, by Jo-Ann Carson is one of those stories that once it gets going it does not let you go. I really enjoyed Abby’s first adventure in this new series ‘A Ghost & Abby Mystery’. This is truly a fast-paced and fun read filled with magic, secrets and romance. A thrill ride from beginning to end!
Abby’s new adventure, as the mother of three kids, part-time janitor and private detective, along with her charming Viking ghost, named Eric, embark on a new mission at a haunted manor. She’s on the roll again! She is hired to find hidden diamonds in the manor, where ghosts roam the place. While, Eric, her partner, will use his talents to charm her again. However, he’s on a mission too! The fun began as magic is spilled all over! Will their wishes come true? What will happen next?
I thoroughly enjoyed Jo-Ann Carson’s ghostly, witchy novel.
