Take a trip to the small Texas town where only outsiders fit in with the first novel in #1 New York Times bestselling author Charlaine Harris’ paranormal mystery series.Welcome to Midnight, Texas, a town with many boarded-up windows and few full-time inhabitants, located at the crossing of Witch Light Road and the Davy highway. It’s a pretty standard dried-up western town. There’s a pawnshop … town.
There’s a pawnshop with three residents. One is seen only at night. There’s a diner, but people stopping there tend not to linger. There’s a newcomer, Manfred Bernardo, who just wants to work hard and blend in. But Manfred has secrets of his own…

Since I had read previous series’ by Charlaine Harris and this one is set in a fictional town in Texas, I had to read it. The characters have “special abilities” but she keeps you guessing and trying to figure them out. This is the first in a three book series and I got the other two the day they were released. If you enjoy mystery, humor and suspense this is a wonderfully written easy read.
Midnight Crossroad is first of new series by author of Sookie Stackhouse series. Small Texas town, middle of nowhere, with very few residents, but all of them are extra-special. A vampire, a witch, a psychic, a hired killer, a preacher and a good ole boy are the main characters. All they want is to be left alone to get on with their lives, but the real world keeps intruding.
Good read, want more.
Another win for fans of Charmaine Harris! I found this book to be much better than the Dead to the World – Sookie Stackhouse series. The diversity of the characters- each with their own unique supernatural secret is refreshing – I had fun trying to put 2 and 2 together and figure out who was what, and why, and how it figured into the overall town. Very interesting plot, and while you find out SOME secrets in this one, she doesn’t reveal all, so get ready to read the sequels – Dayshift, and Nightshift – very cool series!
I absolutely loved the idea and mystery of this book. It was an exciting, on the edge of your seat, whats going to happen next. It definitely kept me reading till the end.
I love this book. In fact, I am reading it again. I love the characters, the mysteries that surround them, and the possibilities for future stories. I’m looking forward to discovering what brought each character to Midnight, their individual stories. I’m so looking forward to continuing the series.
I know I am one of the odd ones, but I loved this series. This tiny town in the middle of nowhere and it’s interesting, quirky, scary and loyal townspeople was a treat.
The pawn shop looks like an old building from the outside but when you get inside it is so much bigger and full to the rafters with strange and magical things as well as your run of the mill items. The pawn shop has two basement apartments with spooky residents and across the road is a magic shop and also home to the resident witch.
There’s a witch and a vampire and a psychic and Angels, oh my! It all worked for me, beautifully. Oh, and the cat is fantastic.
Read all three books, please! They were quick reads and fun reads. You have to read these books with an open mind for what they are, not literary giants, just pure fun!
Kudos to Charlaine Harris for introducing me to this wacky town with it’s wonderful cast of characters.
The first mystery in a trilogy set in the small town of Midnight, Texas. If you’re a fan of Charlaine Harris other series you might recognize some of the characters in this one.
I missed my train stop because of this book. There aren’t a lot of books that will make me do that but I was so caught up in the book I went 4 stops past where I was supposed to get off.
Love this series from C. Harris!
This is the third book of the Midnight Texas trilogy, recently adapted with the first two books about Midnight Texas for a series on television. I have met the author, many years ago, and she has kept her keen edge and outdone herself with this ghostly vampire-ridden demon-dwelling seer nurturing town of fascinating people, Lem, Olivia, Creek, Manny, the Rev, Fiji, the list spools and fools us. I nominate these books for the most original publications of the year (whatever year they appeared,) Even with my Sookie Stackhouse collection, I eagerly await another Midnight-type of thriller from this author. Yea!!!
I hope the series isn’t over. I want to read more.
Pretty good start to this new series by one of my favorite authors. It appears that Ms. Harris is going back to her roots with a mystery series. There is the paranormal involved though. Two of the characters we have met before. Manfred in the Harper Connelly series (my personal favorite) and Bobo in the Lily Bard series (also a favorite). Most of this first book introduces us to the very small town of Midnight, Texas and the mysterious people who live there. As to the mystery in this book, I had my suspicions how it would end but I wasn’t sure if I was right. I like a story that leaves me guessing to the end. I will look forward to the next book in this trilogy series.
I don’t read paranormal books but this was on my shelf and I ran low of reading matter. I enjoyed it and may read the other books in the series.
Loved it! It’s amazing how Harris continues to come up with unusual, original characters and story lines.
Charlaine Harris creates wonderful characters and puts them in interesting worlds. This is the first book in a fun trilogy.
wonderful well-developed characters and scenery. I could not wait but did for each book to appear.
Midnight, Texas is a small-town chock full of secrets. There’s very few inhabitants here and most of the buildings are boarded up and dusty. There’s one stop light and is as quiet as can be. When Manfred Bernardo moves into town, he’s presented with a few truths, including the fact that there’s a witch and a vampire who live there. Manfred has settled in Midnight nicely. He’s a psychic with a flourishing business and can work from anywhere that has an internet connection.
When presented with the discovery of the body of the pawnshop owner’s missing girlfriend, the town comes together to figure out who killed her and why.
I enjoyed this story. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that there were parts that dragged on for entirely too long. It made for a dry read at times, and I’d need to stop and start again later.
The characters are diverse and interesting, I can’t wait to see what happens next in this little Texas town. I’m particularly interested in Olivia and Fiji. Both are complex characters with secrets that haven’t been revealed yet. I’m going to continue on with the series and hope that the other books don’t have dry spots like this one did.
I watched TV series and then read the book they were real great
wishe there were more
Recommending this on the strength of the popularity of Charlaine Harris’ Southern Vampire series with the beloved Sookie Stackhouse and the hunky vampires. But the characters in this one are not as interesting or compelling. I didn’t get caught up in any of it, but it did have some interesting moments.
