5 Stars!
Dare I say it? I believe that this is the best book I have read by LJ Shen. I adored it. I devoured it. I was sad to see it come to an end.
Once upon a time, a mere mortal fell in love with a rock god. You probably know this is not a fairy tale by now. Mortals and gods don’t mix.
Shen throws us readers into a tour bus with a British boy band. She takes us on this exciting ride between normalcy and fame. The readers, along with Indie, get to see that fame may bring fortune but it doesn’t always bring good fortune or good company. From the very start, Indie doesn’t play into the schemes they create. She stands up for herself and her unlikely boss. I was so impressed by Indie’s character. While she was heavily broken, she wasn’t flawed.
Speaking of boss, Alex is intrigued by Indie. He recognizes her strength and sees that as a challenge. He tries many times to break the blue-haired girl, but she hardly ever cracks. What confuses Alex the most is that Indie becomes his muse. Now, he must portray to the others that he wants her gone – when that is the last thing he wants.
Just do yourself a favor and pick this up. If you are a fan of twisty-turns, angst, and a bus full of sweaty British musicians – its a must read. LJ Shen never disappoints. Pinky promise!

Midnight Blue is a standalone book by L.J. Shen.
“I needed her words and her thoughts and her disposition. I wanted to suck her soul dry and pour it onto my pages, my pages, getting my money’s worth out of my babysitter. Because she was innocent. And strong. And so infuriating, picking at her brain felt like a necessity.”
This book broke my heart and mended it in a cycle over and over again. I had literal tears from sadness, frustration, and then…happiness.
“You look at me with dynamite in your eyes, waiting for me to light up the match and finally set you on fire.”
British bad boy rock star Alex Winslow is a major a**hole, extremely moody and broody, broken, so flawed, unpredictable, and absolutely unforgettable. He is one and the only most complex person ever.
“See, we’re all vases. And you’re the one scattered on the floor, shattered beyond repair.”
Indigo Bellamy is sweet, naive, lonely, and broken, but she is absolutely so beautiful. She is no door mat though. She knows her worth and she’s confident in what she likes.
“I finally saw her for who she really was. A cunning pixie, a thief of hearts. She was shy and reserved, but she had power now, and she knew it. It made our game so much more interesting.”
Fresh out of rehab, Alex, is so unpredictable that his management team hires Indie as a “babysitter” to literally watch his every move. Alex’s world tour needs to be flawless and he needs to stay out of trouble, but his pride and a**holey-ness personality makes it hard for him to accept that someone has to watch him.
“There was nothing to worry about when you told the truth. The truth was factual, and facts are things you can’t change or bend to your will.”
After getting to know Indie, Alex uses her as his muse for his music. Their journey was tough. It was full of cracks. They are literally polar opposites. The demons from the past and now are strong and dominant. Every time they are together, its combustible and things are about to be destructive.
“I don’t even want you at this point. I need you. It’s different and carnal, and completely necessary for my existence.”
This book called out to me. There were real life situations like addiction and how one can fall from it and how hard it can be to pull back from it. I feel like LJ Shen flawlessly captured this to the T. It was heartbreaking yet it was so beautiful.
“She was my muse. She was my life. She was my all.”
This book was just so flawlessly written. This was amazing. It was so brilliant that I about felt lost after I was done. Amazing job as always, LJ Shen! It was truly breathtaking.
“And that was the naked, raw truth. Indigo Bellamy was mine.”
I’ve heard many stories in the celebrity world regarding substance abuse, sex, scandals etc. This beautiful story gave me another view to their own struggles as well as their artistic creativity. Alex is a talented rock star with a troubled lifestyle in which he reaches out to cocaine to numb his feelings. Indie is a sweet, strong, beautiful and independent young woman who would do anything to make ends meet and support her brother and his family. And that’s how Indie becomes Alex’s babysitter. I love how their feelings has developed over time and how Indie has slowly changed Alex and made him better. In a way, she sorta heals his soul. Just like any other LJ Shen’s books, it does have some surprised elements at the end, and it really makes the book unputdownable. I love how the ending of the book goes, again to make a point that Indie is not an easy girl to win over and she always has her heart 100% for the man she loves. Absolutely a recommended book! As well as others from LJ Shen 🙂
How am I still surprised at how amazing this ladies words are?
I loved loved this story. Grand gestures and the feels up to wazoo.
5 stars is not enough for this book.
Steering away from All Saints High that we’ve gotten to know, we travel on the road with the sexiest rockstar known. Indie is a lovely young lady who is still trying to find her way in the world, finds a job essentially babysitting a star to make sure they stay out of trouble. She doesn’t see herself as extraordinary, but sometimes what you see in the mirror is not what others see if you. Alex Winslow is known for partying and women. He’s on a crash course to a career ending blow if he doesn’t straighten out his life. Enter Indie.
“Alex Winslow was beautiful in a way storms were—only from afar. Just like them, he had the power to sweep and ruin you, two things I was too busy surviving to entertain.”
I truly enjoyed this novel for its banter and complex relationship development. Even though all is not as it first appears, a HEA is in your future.
I’m such a big fan of LJ Shen and her writing style. She’s so great at writing characters you can’t help but love and hate at the same time. I absolutely hated Alex in the beginning, as the story continued and more pieces of him were revealed I couldn’t help but love and have empathy for him. Indie had such a soul crushing back story, so much devastation and heartbreak. For a while I was really pulling for Lucas and Indie he just seemed like so much of what she needed. There were a couple of plot twists that I didn’t see coming (one I maybe should have). This is such a great book with so many feelings. I listened to the audio version, Muffy Newton and Shane East did an amazing job as always.
Indigo and Alex have the most tragic and beautiful love story you’ll ever lay eyes on! These two were so raw and their story felt beyond genuine! L.J. Shen really knows how to string words together making the most addictive novels anyone can lay their eyes on!!
If you know me you know how much I love rock music. Even more than that is my love for rockers and books about them. This dual POV story about a rock god and the woman who has to handle him while he gets his life together was another one for the list of great books about my favorite thing.
The slow burn, angst filled, tension filled story, keeps you glued to its pages while LJ Shen weaves a story that keeps you guessing. Alex was not an easy guy to fall for but then again those guys are usually my favorite ones. Indie was one I liked from the very beginning. She was strong and determined to do what she had to do. My issues lie with the way Alex and Indie’s relationship started and the way she let him treat her. It took me awhile to believe that they would be good together and believe they actually loved each other. Even with that, I still really enjoyed this book and the ride we were taken on. I love her writing and her stories. Check this one out cause rocker stars are always hot! LOL
Want to know something funny? I’m not a huge fan of angst. I know, shocking right!? It’s even more shocking that I’m completely addicted to LJ Shen’s books, because a lot of people say they’re full of angst, or that the guys are too much of a jerk…or something. And yet, I’m madly in love with these books.
This one was no exception. I love a good rock star romance, and this one delivered in spades.
What’s odd is there was a slight love triangle, but at the same time, not. I know that doesn’t really make any sense, but even though there was another guy showing interest in Indie, I never got the sense that she would end up with anyone but Alex.
Ah, Alex. He was so screwed up, so many issues. And yet, I loved him. I loved every moment he and Indie were together. I loved when they’d sit in the hotel hallway and he’d write songs while she just talked. And I loved that she gave as good as she got. That’s one of the biggest things I’ve found in LJ She’s books…even though the guys are HUGE jerks, the women give as good as they get. They’re not doormats that just roll over and take it.
I loved that Indie didn’t give in to Alex the first time he showed up on her doorstep. Both of them needed time apart, especially him, to get his life together.
This book definitely ranks up there as one of my all time favorite rock star romances.
This book blew me away! 4 stars
This book drew me in from the beginning. Then it consumed me, & I didn’t want to stop reading the love story of Indie & Alex. They made me smile, made me laugh, made my heart soar, made my heart break then put it back together. If you want to experience all this, then I highly recommend this book!
Rockstar Alex Winslow is a walking disaster. Indigo Bellamy’s life is about putting out fires for basic survival. When Indigo is hired to babysit Alex, freshly out of rehab, on his tour there is no room for failure for either of them. But soon they find they are in over their heads as they get caught up in their attraction and the possibilities loom large as their hearts collide.
LJ Shen known for her brutally honest portrayals and relationships that are not granted easy passes takes on Midnight Blue with this direct approach and brings to her audience a story that aches and pulses with the emotions of its characters. This writer knows how to deconstruct and bring out all the festering that lurks in her depictions hearts. What she also knows how to do is introduce love as a salvation and a chance for purging the bad as her characters grasp at the good in each other and in life.
Indie was wonderfully approachable without coming off as saintly. Her capacity to ascend above and be a better person never faltered and victim was not in her vocabulary. This heroine was good, kind and completely believable. Her connection with Alex was a process even while instantaneous and took readers on a rough road that they will think is worth the effort in the end. Alex wore the cape of fabulously self-centered while really harboring a gentle wounded soul. He was complicated, his emotions ran deep and he was caught up in his very comfortable dysfunction, but boy did he rise to being one phenomenal hero. Ms. Shen builds her characters and gives readers a chance to love them even as her characters make the same discoveries.
Midnight Blue was moved quickly in a thoughtful and intense manner. The classic story of The Little Prince was used as a sweet comparison to this story as Alex and Indie explored their burgeoning feelings and added a whimsical nuance to the work. L.J. Shen strips aside the glamor of the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle for a raw and intimate ride in Midnight Blue and readers will love it!
*I was given an advanced copy. All opinions expressed are my own.*
Midnight Blue by L.J. Shen is a standalone, contemporary, enemies to lovers, rockstar romance told in first person, dual POV.
The story follows 21-year-old Indigo Bellamy who has been hired as a sober companion for British rock star Alex Winslow while he is on tour. Indie is young, kindhearted, and somewhat innocent while Alex is selfish, volatile, and an unapologetic user. They start off hating each other but as the story progresses the sexual tension increases and they give in to the chemistry.
Overall, I enjoyed the story – although I had a very difficult time buying the big twist. I just didn’t find it believable at all. Even so, I found the story very entertaining and enjoyable to read.
Midnight Blue is one of many of Ms. Shen’s books I’ve devoured. This one was a real page-turner and I found I couldn’t put it down. I had to know what happened to this dirty-talking rocker and the sweetheart assigned to keep him on the straight and narrow. Wow, what a wild ride.
An interesting take on the regular girl/rock star guy story. Their lives coincidentally and a little bit unbelievably intertwine, but it’s interesting and steamy enough to make it worth it.
This was one that when I first picked it up, if it hadn’t been during the school year, I might have stayed up all night reading just to finish it. It was so good! At almost halfway through I reached that point in a book when you finally figure out what its title means when it wasn’t necessarily obvious from the beginning. This was such a sexy intense rock star romance story. And I’m so excited to get to meet the author next August at Book Bonanza so I can gush over how much I loved it!
Rock romance is a very popular subject in books.
Some authors know what to do when they write this genre. Some not.
Leigh Shen definitely know how to write rock romance book with any doubts!
Midnight Blue takes us to journey with music, love, lust and adventure.
Alex Winslow is a “pretty boy” whos earn a lot of money and spend it on really stupid things.
Also he is a kind of childlish with big problems.
And we have Indigo (love this name!)
Indie was employed to be his babysitter. Ok, i know it sounds ridiculous – old man with babysitter 😀
But this story is not only about love and music. This story is also about muse, passion and hard work.
Indie takes her part really serious, Alex of course not.
They dont like each other, but one day in one moment this enemy feel changed.
They know that, they dont hate each others.
They are in love.
This story is soooo precious and fantastic! And this end? OMG I was totally devastated when I end it. But it is nothing new. All LJ Shen books are killing me. More and more 😛
Ok my first read of LJ Shen and I am wondering why I have not read her books sooner. I am looking forward to reading more in the near future.
Alex and Indigo were 2 people that were on total opposites of the spectrum. He fresh out of rehab heading out on a tour that needed to go smoothly or else. Indigo needed work to help her brother and sister in law and their son Ziggy. This would be able to take the stress of them and get them out of the hole.
Would they be able to spend 3 months together and find themselves throughout this journey.
I loved this story as it had me laughing and crying and wanting me to throw my kindle across the room.
Love it! Recommend anything LJ Shen
Alex freaking Winslow. Loved this rockstar romance.
This was a good read/listen. I liked the book a lot. The characters were real and I enjoyed the journey through thwir story. The audiobook was fab. I have nothing bad to say about this one.
