“All true meanings are hidden. Life is full of secrets, and narrow-minded people, and sugar-coated, empty conversations that hold no weight. What’s real is what’s inside us. What’s important is what we feel.”
I have been sitting here for 20 minutes trying to figure out how to write a review. I’m still at a loss. I’m like Alex trying to write his songs, except it’s not drinking or drugs getting in the way. It’s basically the story, it’s left me speechless. It’s just a really different, and very well written story.
It’s an enemies to lovers, lots of angst, mixed with addictions, lack of communication, very sad upbringing on Alex’s part, very sad trama in Indie’s family, her family has it’s problems. JUST SO MUCH GOING ON!!! And what I just wrote barely touches on the depth of it all! L.J. Shen writes the most beautiful, in-depth characters, who you love to hate and love to love. She’s an absolute genius in writing characters.
I will admit when I first started reading the book it didn’t grab me immediately, but that could have just been my mood. But then it did, and then it really did, and then I was a goner….
A definite 5/5 Star read for me! Had to add this one not only to my favorites of 2018, but to my all time favorites. This will stay with me for a while.
Never has my heart been stolen so completely by a fallen rock god like Alex Winslow did! Sorry, Kellan Kyle, you have been replaced, even if he is a massive trainwreck.
“Alex Winslow was a tornado, impacting everything and everyone on his way to destruction.”
He was most definitely on his way to his own destruction. He was once on top of the world until he fell, and it was a spectacularly horrible fall. He is just fresh out of rehab and back on tour. His agent and bandmates, whom he once considered friends, think they have a solution…a sobriety companion in the form of Indigo Bellamy. Alex has to finish the tour or else, and Indie needs the money desperately for her family. It won’t be easy as he has run off all of his previous “babysitters” within days, but he hasn’t met Indie. She might not look like it, but she goes toe to toe with Alex, calling him out on his garbage. As she continues on, he finds that she could solve his problems, and he has no shortage of those. What he could have never guessed was her being his muse for writing again and becoming his new addiction.
Oh, how I loved Alex and Indie. Not many people would say that about him, but I couldn’t help myself. He was so deliciously bad! Shen captured his artistic personality perfectly. He could put such beautiful words on paper, yet spew such hate, and then such dirty but erotic things in Indie’s ear. He showed a side to Indie that he didn’t show to others, and that was the side of him you would fall in love with like Indie did. Then, he would revert back to being his self-absorbed self, alienating others who cared about him.
Indie was all goodness, and her lightness would bring Alex out of his darkness for just a while. It was amazing how she could find joy in life when something so precious was selfishly taken from her. She is hesitant about life though, and she likes to live life within the rules of society while he just blows right through them. As she brings some balance to his life, he brings passion to hers. I was just hoping he wouldn’t burn her alive, and if someone could, it would be Alex.
If you are looking for a novel full of passion and emotion, this one is it! Shen does show us the darker side of fame. Alex had it all, but his fame also took it all from him too. He was betrayed by those he cared about, never knowing who was to be trusted and who wasn’t. He felt like he somehow lost himself along the way, so as a lot of artists do, he turned to drugs, which even made him lose himself even more. Indie helped him with that, but she wasn’t his solution.
As if the book could get any better, Shen put in a major twist that brought everything to a head and made Alex and Indie question everything they knew about each other and themselves. It will force Alex to take a good, hard look of who he truly is.
I’m so mad at myself for waiting so long to read something by L.J. Shen. If you read one rockstar romance this year, read this one! Fall under Alex Winslow’s spell, and take an emotional journey with him and Indie… I promise it will be one you won’t soon forget!!!!
I loved Alex and Indie. I’m not sure who the hero is. She was such a wonderful heroine. Selfless, sassy, protective, passionate. She gave as much as Alex could dish out. Alex is a hot mess. Drugged out rock star, post-rehab, not committed to anything but holding onto his anger and self-absorption. And he slathered his negative attitude all over everyone around him.
There’s a great cast of characters. Jenna and Hudson, Blake, Lucas, Allie, Nat and Craig. The antics and secrets, the lies, the friendships, the support and betrayal, the guilt and self-destruction, the loss, the love. The support system runs deep, even if you don’t see it. Sometimes you just have to do it yourself. Acceptance and resolution.
There really is a HEA but the obstacles are many and had my heart breaking so many times. The passion was . The post-gig sessions were soul searching and tender. There really is more depth to Alex than even Alex recognizes. But there is an end to them, on a timer and they both know it. It hurts.
I cheered, I cursed, I wanted to smack someone (more than once ), I hoped, I hurt…let’s just say Midnight Blue has all the feels. There’s just so much to this story and I loved it!
This was a wonderful read. You will both love and hate Alex all at the same time, he is the sexy, cocky, self-absorbed rock star that feels everyone around him owes him. Indigo is a sweet introvert that has fallen on rough times and knows she has to stand up for herself in order to make her situation better. These two will take you a emotional ride full of anguish, heartbreak, companionship, lust and love.
5 BRITISH stars for my favorite ROCK STAR! God save the King, aka Alex Winslow!
“Alex Winslow was beautiful in a way storms were—only from afar. Just like them, he had the power to sweep and ruin you, two things I was too busy surviving to entertain.”
For goodness sake! I was left speechless. There are not enough words to describe how much I fucking love Midnight Blue. Every second and minute was worth it. I spent the best time of my life reading this book. LJ Shen has done it again! (As the Queen she is) I am still drooling over Alex Winslow. I really wonder what inspires Leigh to write such kind of masterpiece. She has RUINED me in the best way possible. Her writing is impassive and so sinful.
LJ Shen is Midas. Everything she writes is pure GOLD. This time she delivers a mind-blowing and all-consuming book. The plot is original and WELL developed. It is clear she has put her heart in those lines as in all her past books. She has the power to leave me wanting more and this time is not the exception.
“I’m not your nightmare, sweetheart. Nightmares, you wake up from. With me, I’ll keep going until you’re out of my hair. We clear?”
She gifts us a DIAMOND, a UNICORN, a very intense book all wrapped in a sinful cover. Who doesn’t love cocky rock stars? If your thing is British men and scandalous rock stars, this book is for you. LJ Shen has mixed the best of the best in a man. Alex Winslow is a god-like on earth.
This book contains a hot, sexy and cocky arsehole, aka Alex Winslow. He is a damaged rock star. His life is full of parties, drugs, sex and music. He has been in rehab but his addictive character does not help him. His career is quite in danger because of his addictions. His manager will give him an ultimatum and she will hire Indie, the little blue pixy who will change his entire world. Indie will be his personal challenge. Her innocence intoxicates him. She is dangerously good for him.
“When I finally lay my hands on you—and make no mistakes, Stardust, I will—you will be crying, all right. My name. Over. And. Over. Again.”
Indie Bellamy is a young woman whose life was determined by the lost of her parents. She only has his older brother and his family. Money issues are making her life quite difficult. She needs a job and babysitting a rock star was not the job of her dreams but she needs it badly. Alex will torment her in a sinful way. He is the kind of boy who enjoys breaking good girls’ hearts.
“When I look at you, I see something broken that isn’t worth fixing. And you look at me like I’m a cheap thing to replace the expensive one that’s been stolen from you. See, we’re all vases. And you’re the one scattered on the floor, shattered beyond repair. So I’ll let someone else pick you up. It’s really that simple. Have fun with your temporary glue.”
When Alex and Indie are together is like watching galaxies collide. They were drawn to each other’s arms by fate. Alex like the little Prince he is, enjoys tormenting his new toy but sooner or later he will discover that Indigo is a muse sent from gods to save his soul and heart.
“I apologize in advance.” He cocked his head to the side. “For?” “Ruining you for any other man on this planet. I’m going to fuck you, Indie. So hard you’ll think about me years from now, when you lie under your boring, missionary-loving husband. I will own every orgasm, every shiver, every wave of pleasure inside you. From here on out, it will be me. Just me. And for that, I truly am sorry.”
Alex Winslow is a cocky possessive man. But who really is he? During his tour he will discover that his addiction only bring more and more disasters. He was given a new opportunity and Indie will inspire him to write one of the best albums of his entire career as a rock star.
“He was no knight in shining armor, a far cry from a savior. He was just a broken, sad boy who was given a great gift that put him on display for the world to see and to judge.”
Since I started reading this book, I had the feeling that it was going to be EPIC because it had all the elements to be UNIQUE and PERFECT. I was not wrong. This is the kind of book that exceeds your expectations. This is perfect for readers who crave a good and dirty romance between a rock star and a simple mortal girl. Alex Winslow is a panty dropping wet dream. Let him seduce you with his cocky and poetic mouth.
“I need to be inside you the way you’re inside me. So deep I want to peel my skin off just to get rid of you. I need to get rid of you”
All the stars for this one!
Gah! This book y’all! It’s got me having all kinda feels! I can’t even find the words to explain the incredible writing and the feeling and soul the author put into this book! Indie and Alex’s journey was absolutely phenomenal! It was filled with, pain, insecurities, drama, heartbreak, struggle, addiction, a freaking plot twist that blew my mind, sex, lust, growth and LOVE! It took us down a deep dark road but we came out the other side beautifully! My words can’t even do it justice! I loved loved loved it! It might of just kicked Vicious out of number 1!
This was a hard book for me to review because for the first 27 chapters of this book I disliked Alex and I felt like I had no attachment to this character. He was cruel and he frustrated me to the point had he been a real person I probably would have punched him in the junk just to make me feel better. Indie on the other hand I adored, she attached herself to my heart and soul and I just wanted the world to shine for her because she shone for us. I had decided early in the book that this was a four star however once I hit that magical chapter 27 the ice melted from my heart for Alex and I saw deep into his soul, I saw the broken pieces, the doubt and the lost man that he was. This book became more than five stars it became everything. Midnight Blue is about discovery, revelations and that sometimes the people who love you the most lie to protect and heal you. Your heart may break along the way in their story but sometimes it is the survival that makes it all more beautiful.
I’m happy to say I started out the year with a bang; I’m rating Midnight Blue 6 stars and adding it to my list for Top Reads of the Year! This book left me with a wicked hangover and I hate when this happens, I feel sorry for the books I’ll be reading afterwards, because I’ll keep comparing it to this book. Ms Shen has written a story that has the perfect combination of a great storyline filled with an amazing twist, main characters I fell in love with and secondary characters that added so much to the story, all told in alternating POV. This emotional tale left me breathless at times, so in awe of how the story had me enthralled to the point I couldn’t stop thinking about it, even in my sleep. I kept texting all my friends, ranting about the incredible book I was reading, pleading with them to read it too, so we could discuss it. This is one book you don’t want to miss!
British rock star Alex Winslow is a mess. Two weeks after he jumped on stage at the Grammy’s and took the statuette out of the hands of his former friend, William Bushell, who had won Best Album, Alex was arrested for DUI and cocaine possession. He’d been on a downward spiral after Will “stole” his fiancé, the model Fallon Lankford, two years ago. So, after recently completing a stay in rehab, the twenty-seven, twelve-time Grammy winner is being forced to go on tour, after canceling once already. It’s either that or paying thirty million dollars out of his own pocket to the production companies. It’s a three month tour that will eventually take him to Europe, where he’s sure he’ll run into Will and Fallon. He wants to get back at both of them, especially Fallon for making a fool out of him. So his agent, Jenna, has decided to hire a nanny to watch him on the tour, someone to make sure he stays sober, straight, and away from the press and trouble. Oh, and Jenna wants him to write an album, too.
Indigo “Indie” Bellamy has had a hard life these past four years. After losing her parents, in a tragic accident, she and her brother, Craig had to revise their lives. With little or no money between them their dreams of college faded. Now twenty-two, she works odd jobs while riding her bike everywhere she can. With her hair dyed icy-blue, Indie wears dresses she makes herself, with a vintage feel; partly to save money and because she loves that style. She’s been living with Craig and his wife, Nat and their son, Ziggy, in a one bedroom apartment. Craig has basically given up, and both Nat and Indie are doing everything they can to keep a roof over their heads and take care of Ziggy. After seeing a want ad for a PA position, she applies for it, not knowing or caring who she’d be working for. So after finding out the PA position is really a nanny job with a lot of responsibility, looking after a jaded rock star drug addict, she accepts only after she finds out she’ll make one hundred thousand a month, for three months, if she lasts that long. Oh, and Jenna advises her not to fall for Alex. No problem, she promises Jenna.
“Alex Winslow was beautiful in a way storms were—only from afar. Just like them, he had the power to sweep and ruin you, two things I was too busy surviving to entertain.”
Alex vows to get rid of the tiny, oddly dressed nanny Jenna’s hired, his third so far. But much to his surprise, she has a backbone made of steel and proves she won’t be easy to scare off, as hard as he tries. Indie desperately needs the money, not for her, it’s a lifeline for what little family she has left. Alex belittles and tries to embarrass Indie any chance he gets, and when she shoves back as good as she gets, she slowly begins to earn his respect, as well as the bandmates and his manager, Blake’s. After spending time together talking and spilling secrets, she slowly becomes Alex’s muse, and songs begin to flow. Beautiful and heartfelt songs. They grow closer and closer together, all the while knowing they have an expiration date, when the tour ends, where they’ll part company.
This story is full of secrets and surprises and twists you will never expect. Moments of angst that made me ugly cry and others filled with laugh out loud moments. All that made up for an incredible finale. This book! I absolutely loved every single word of it!
God I need a minute. It is so hard to put words to paper after reading an L.J. Shen book that you’re not even sure you can even do it justice. I honestly didn’t know how she could beat Scandalous but Good Lord she did it. No. She.Killed.It. Midnight Blue is the BEST book she has written to date. Hands down and with no doubt I KNOW it is one of the best books I have ever read! I never wanted it to end.
I have read every book this author has written and in all honesty, her writing has evolved. This story was brilliant. So witty and filled with hidden subtext that speaks to the inner sarcastic bitch in all of us. In short- she writes like a snappy genius. And the story? Christ. This story was glorious. When Indigo “Indie” Bellamy answered a Wanted Ad in the paper she never knew that she would become the companion/muse to one of the world’s biggest rockstars. Enter Alex Winslow- an unrepentant Alpha-hole who owns his bad behavior and keeps you coming back for more. He is unapologetically arrogant, rude, a bully to most and an A-hole to all. And one of my favorite book boyfriends of all time!
But like all L.J. Shen heroes, he is a complicated man. A tortured hero and a broken broken man trying to find his way, blinded by a mask of disillusionment and betrayal on his heart. And with intentions to bolster his career with a fresh new album and a secret revenge agenda, Indie has no idea what she is getting into: an explosive minefield of secrets, tragedies and lies. She becomes a player on the board without even knowing the rules of the game.
Like all novels by this author I absolutely FLOVED the banter. It was hot af and so addicting and seriously, she does the male perspective SO well it’s kind of uncanny and scary. As a result, Alex and Indie had fiery chemistry and spitfire back and forth exchanges. In addition, I loved how the author wrote so hauntingly real and honest. I laughed and cried and had such visceral reactions. This couple made you fall in love and then cry in heartbreak. Shen paints a picture using her words and passion to describe the journey between a Rock God and the mere mortal who helped him see truth in the sea of lies he’s been living in for years. But could she stand to be with and believe in him once his greatest truth is revealed?
At this point Leigh only needs to compete with herself as she has unknowingly set the bar and placed herself atop a pedestal amongst her peers. Her writing is a gift and for us – her diehard readers? It’s Christmas every time she writes a new book. And honestly? I can’t wait for my next gift. Bravo! 6 million stars! ~Ratula
Amazing book!!
Two souls collide
Midnight Blue is my first ever L.J. Shen novel and I look forward to reading everything else she has written and ever will write because O M G this book was amazing. Ignoring the fact that the blurb, that every single teaser, that the hot as all hell cover had me super excited to read this book, I opened up to one absolutely outstanding prologue!!!!! A seemingly simple gossip rag article – it was pure perfection. So much so I made a note of it straight away because I didn’t want to forget the awesomeness of the start of this story. And throw in the “comments” at the end of the article and I was in love with Midnight Blue straight away.
Disgusting. Gorgeous. Rude. Sexy. Screwed-up. Witty. Broody. Unbearable. Trouble. Trouble. Trouble.
Indie Bellamy sums up Alex Winslow – rock god, recovering addict and cocky, arrogant man – absolutely perfectly. This is the guy that she has been tasked to “nanny” – his sobriety companion to keep him away from everything that could get him in “trouble” – and Alex is not an easy man to get along with. L.J. does a brilliant job of portraying a realistic look into life with a rock god when the man in question is as messed up as Alex is. There’s no sugarcoating, there’s no fantasy rock star life – what you see is what you get. Of course there’s so much more to Alex, and that comes out naturally over the course of the story. Any changes are not instant; everything flows in such a way that you will not be able to put this book down. I devoured it in less than 24 hours because it is just THAT good!
I absolutely loved every single word of Midnight Blue – even when I was hating on a character – because the writing forces you to feel everything Indie and Alex feel, and you want them to get their Happily Ever After; even though it seems nigh on impossible.
One of my top reads for January, Midnight Blue is definitely a book I’d recommend one-clicking, reading and falling in love with. I know it’s early days but I can definitely see it featuring on my “top” lists for the year already – it’s too incredible not to be there.
L.J Shen has done it again I think Midnight Blue has to be one of my favorites by her , not only was I drawn to it because of the author but the blurb intrigued me I needed to know these characters and to see how their story would go . Every book by L.J I hate hate HATE the hero and wonder how on earth he can make me swoon over him well this author has done it again because I ended up swooned out . The way this was written had me feel that pain that Alex and Indigo haven been through they both have had struggles while hiding behind a shield but that shield gets dents along the way the more time they spent together that shield broke . Alex is one of those heroes you love to hate unapologetic , mean , annoying but the more he lets indie in the more we get to see the real him not the front he’s a lyric genius , funny , has a sweet side , determined , and knows how to eliminate panties on the spot plus he has an accent I’m a sucker for accents , when we are shown a very vulnerable moment by him my heart ended up hurting . Oh my gosh Indigo her agony just destroyed me when we find out a major oh no moment I had to shut my kindle off and take a breath because I did not see that coming , she’s strong , funny , smart , selfless and has a backbone a real amazing heroine . I can’t wait to read more by L.J I hope we get to see more of the band in the future because they are one hell of a crazy bunch .

How is your soul feeling today?
That’s the start of this book and let me tell you, L.J. puts your soul through the wringer with this one!
This story of Indigo and Alex is amazing!
Alex is the epitome of a tortured musician. LJ never sugarcoats her characters, she makes them real, she makes them dark, she makes them gritty and swoony with a capital “S”! Alex is no exception, add to that the British element and wowza, what a hero (or anti-hero for some of the book, which is amazing).
Indigo develops a lot of nicknames in this story and they are all poignant. She is strong, she is fierce and she doesn’t take any crap from anyone! The best of the best heroine! Her back story is so moving and really shapes her to the person she becomes.
Alex and Indigo’s love story is rocky, and it’s hard, and again, LJ doesn’t sugarcoat it. That’s what makes this story so good, you have to get through the ugly to get to the beautiful and it was so worth it.
This story is gonna stick with me for a while, I hope when you read it, it will stick to you too!
Thank you for your words L.J.! And thank you for bring us into your world of characters and stories!
Guys! I have not been excited about a book in a long time! I got this book on a Sunday night and fell into within seconds. The story and characters are woven so good the book held me captive. A great new author for me. I will be looking to read more stories from this engaging writer. One for the favorites
I LOOOOOOVED this book!!! It was seriously intense for all the right reasons. LJ Shen writes an amazing rockstar so if you’re into those kinds of stories (you know, the obsessive, addictive kind), give this one a go!
Loved the book. Like been on a emotional rollercoaster wonderful character’s.
Beautifully Broken Soulmates.
I’m not gonna lie, it took me a bit to like Alex. He started out as your typical egotistical rock star, but as the story progressed, his layers were slowly peeled back to expose his big heart and sweetness.
Indigo is my spirit animal. Her selflessness was humbling and she is definitely someone you want in your corner. Her struggle to ensure her family live a better life was heartbreaking at times.
Indie and Alex’s chemistry was palpable. Like off the freaking charts. Their witty banter had me laughing out loud. Both had a past that when revealed had me in tears.
This book was so much more than a gritty romance. It was a journey in self discovery and finding love when you least expect it.
Once you you touch this book you don’t want to put it down!!! From the beginning until the end you’ll love this book every chapter.
It’s really intense, heartbreaking, provoking, and funny ofc.
And now I’m book hangover, and it’s because the hottest British Tamagotchi!!!!
“You’re such a bastard, calling you one is an insult to every bastard inhabiting this world. We need to invent a new word for what you are.”
Rocks bad boy is making a comeback. Alex Winslow’s life had spun out of control. After a bad album, an arrest and a stint in rehab he is on a comeback tour. His agent insists on Alex having a sobriety companion to keep him out of trouble and sober. She hires Indigo Bellamy, aka Indie, new girl & Stardust. Indie is unique, naïve, selfless and artistic. Alex and Indie are complete opposites. Initially she is completely unaffected by him. Indie challenges Alex’s crazy, rude, impatient, and obnoxious behavior.
“Alex Winslow was a tornado, impacting everything and everyone on his way to destruction.”
“Alex Winslow was, in fact, a pile of stereotypes sewn together into a persona even he couldn’t distinguish anymore. He ticked every single box: rock star, troubled, drug addict, tattooed.”
What Alex and Indie don’t realize is that they have more in common than they thought. They have both suffered loss and loneliness. But they each choose to deal with it in their own way.
As they begin Alex’s three month tour things shift. Alex needs to write an album while on tour but his head is blank. After his first show he is high off of the adrenaline and feels the need to write. He can’t do that with everyone around. He decides to make Indie his “muse” and they begin a ritual of sitting in the hotel hallways post show so that he can write.
“You chased my muse away.”
“I needed her words and her thoughts and her disposition. I wanted to suck her soul dry and pour it onto the pages, my pages, getting my money’s worth out of my babysitter.”
Alex and Indie make a connection. I loved Indie’s character. She is sweet, caring, loving and creative. She puts everyone ahead of herself. She is optimistic, always looking at the positive.
Alex, oh Alex. You very bad bad boy.
“What’s he like?” Disgusting. Gorgeous. Rude. Sexy. Screwed-up. Witty. Broody. Unbearable. Trouble. Trouble.
There are a few surprises, some angst and a lot of heart ache. I love how things are not solved instantly. There was work that needed to be done to help heal these flawed characters. The writing was wonderful! LJ Shen knows how to set the scene and imagine the characters. Alex and Indie will steal your heart! As I side note, I loved the play list and the musical references! #Morrissey #Smiths
“He was no knight in shining armor, a far cry from a savior. He was just a broken, sad boy who was given a great gift that put him on display for the world to see and to judge.”
4.5 stars
To be honest i really don’t even know where to start with this review, i have been sitting here after finishing it for ages just taking in what i read. I am a big fan of LJ Shen books and when i started it i thought ok this is written totally different to her other books and dam did i like it.
This book for me was written really beautifully and there were so many lines that you could take away with you and look back on. They some were really beautiful and made me think. I loved all the music lyrics and if it’s not hard enough to write a novel i couldn’t imagine having to come up with songs aswell but it was done amazingly.
Indie was such a selfless character and sometimes it was to her on detriment and i just wanted to shake her and tell her to get tough but before to long she showed her toughness, her spirit and she showed she would love people with flaws.
Alex Winslow he was pretty swoons, at times and other time i wanted to grab him by his privates and rip them off but he just showed me that people deserve second chances and if you fight for what you want you can go out there and get it with a little work and a little patient.
I really did like this book, took me a while to get going but once i did and i could see where this story was going i didn’t want to put it down to see how life would come together for the two characters and the unconventional families.
If your looking for a book that will tear you down bring you back up and for me it was a little different rocker style book then you need to read this book.
