Over the hill, all outta ducks to give, and suddenly life is looking up . . .even if you’re living with a ghost and fighting off werewolves.
Moving back to Savannah changed my life in all the best ways. New job. New friends. As far from my ex-husband as possible.
I … As far from my ex-husband as possible.
I didn’t count on the Shadow World intensifying its hold on my life.
Color me surprised, when a new job lands in my lap watching over a fairy ring. Worth ten times what I’d make anywhere else, it seems too good to be true. I take it anyway.
And that’s when things get weird.
Spells are cast on my friends that seems to make them lose their marbles.
I’ve got a Bigfoot baking in my kitchen.
And a skeleton is quickly becoming my go-to guy. Which is silly because the eye candy strutting around in front of me is drool worthy. (I’m looking at you, Crash. Really looking 0_0)
Nothing in Savannah is what it seems, and the magic and undercurrents of this city are pulling me onto a dangerous path.
But with a Fae Queen begging my help, and the darkness closing in, I can only do one thing.
Pop a couple Advil, and kick some serious ducking butt.

Great book with a forty-plus-year-old heroine.
Falling back into the shadow world has proven to be quite the task for Breena O’Rylee but she’s taking it two Advil at a time. Breena isn’t getting any younger but she is definitely getting better with age. She’ll show everyone what she’s got, even if it means groaning herself out of bed in the morning.
I’m enjoying every bit of Shannon Mayer’s new Forty Proof series. I can’t wait to see where Breena’s adventures take her in the next book.
I definitely liked this one better than the first one. It had a lot more action and Breena’s character is really filling out. She’s still whiny but not anything like she was and this one wasn’t depressing like the first one. Much better!
Nice character growth in an engaging story
Book 2 in the series, I’d recommend reading the series in order as there’s an underlying plot that (I assume) carries through the entire series—or at least the next book, lol.
More revelations here both personal and professional for Bree. I enjoyed Bree’s continued personal growth as well as the twists to the plot in another couldn’t-put-it-down read. So far, the author has done a nice job of bringing the individual books to a satisfying conclusion while leaving open the underlying storyline for the next book. On to the next!
Hide & seek
Another mind boggling addition to the series. Breena is in over her head but she can’t stop now and unlike the youth around her, age has given her the wisdom she needs to get through. So, some slight of hand, a few misdirections and a firm belief in herself has Breena taking on the bad guys & saving the day.
Very enjoyable.
Never a dull moment in Bree’s life. Her first job on her own is for the fairy queen and that turns out to be a very large pain.
More Suspense and More Thrills!
This series keeps getting better and better with every book! This one has more action, suspense, thrills, murder and mayhem, which kept me captivated and highly entertained from the very beginning to the very end.
Breena is still amazing, still kicks ass (and getting better at it) and is still as witty as ever. She seems to be collecting more friends and enemies as the story progresses and there is some serious sexual tension and intense chemistry going on between a few characters. You need to read it to find out, but buckle up and hang on when you do because this series is definitely a wild ride.
“What can I say? I’m a woman of mystery and full of plot twits you’ll probably never see coming.”
This phenomenal story keeps pulling you in begging for more! Absolutely fantastic series and I can’t wait to see where this amazing author take us next. Highly recommend
Love this author and Love this book. The story moves at a good pace, the characters are fully developed, the dialog is intelligent and engaging, This one takes place about a week after the first book, and you see growth in the characters already. This is a page turner, I was up listening to the wee hours of the morning playing the “one more chapter” game. If you like audio books, this is a good one! The performance is spot on and fabulous as always with Lauren Fortgang.
Great book 2. Can be enjoyed alone but best read/listened to in sequence. The characters are likable, relatable, and funny. The storyline is interesting and entertaining! The narrator did a fantastic job with providing unique voices for each character and appropriate tone inflections for each scene! Looking forward to book 3!
thoroughly enjoyable read! gotta love the ghost Robert, and other magical creatures that spice up this story…
Absolutely loved the first book in this series and the second book did not disappoint. Shannon Mayer is such a great story teller and her characters and worlds that she writes about will suck you in. This is the continued story of a mature woman in her forties named Breena O’Rylee (Bree for short) whose life gets turned upside down by divorce and she moves back home where she grew up to find out that magic is real and she has a place in that world. She is still kicking butt being a bounty hunter and her group of friends have grown in numbers, but so has her list of enemies. I don’t like to give any spoilers in my reviews, so I will just say that this series has a lot of laughter, a little danger (but not too much), some mystery and my favorite part . . . the main character has a lot of sass and a “no ducks to give” attitude. I love Breena and the gang and can’t wait to see what happens next.
A very enjoyable book. Family secrets, all sorts of supernatural characters. There is plenty of fighting and action to keep things entertaining. Makes me want to go to Savannah.
I love Breena, this series, and all the characters. Robert is my favorite skeleton EVER!! I always worry that the books in a series will not be as good as the first…. not an issue here!! Shannon Mayer has built a crazy array of characters in a world within a world, and it works! Better than works, actually… it is fantastic! Read this book!!
The hilarity continues in this the second book in the Forty Proof series. I love Breena and Gran and all the characters in these books. I mean come on who couldn’t love a shy Bigfoot?
The characters in this book are very well developed and well written. The story pulls you in and keeps you turning pages. I actually laughed out loud at different points in this book. Breena is so snarky I love it.
The story moves at a good pace and the story line itself is really good. I would recommend this book to others that like Paranormal and are looking for lead characters that are not teens or in their twenties.
I absolutely love the second installment of The Forty Proof series.
Breena is amazing, and I just love how much her character grew in this book. I love how we saw a lot from Eric and Robert. I also enjoyed meeting Skeletor. I love that name!! Loved diving a bit into the Fae world too. This book was definitely a page turner and it kept me on the edge of my seat! Looking forward to discovering many unanswered questions in the next installment and for Breena to kick the baddies butts!! Definitely a must read series!!
I loved it! Exciting. Action-packed. So so hot. Twist and turns and enemies every where. Breena needs all the help she can get when her new job puts her in more danger than she can handle and with no idea who to trust it’s going to be hard. All she wants is to get her grandmothers house back and work to protect her city, but it’s an up hill battle that’s not won in a day and her weary bones are tired and more than ready for some much needed rest and relaxation. I cannot wait for the next one!
This series just keeps getting better and better! I love these characters and I love Breena O’Rylee! From her take no crap attitude to the very fact that trouble finds her, I found myself laughing and cheering my girl on. She stands up for the little guy which has earned respect from those in the Shadow world and made her Gran proud. I’m totally looking forward to more in the series.
A great series with an opinionated middle age woman just coming into her supernatural power. This is the 2nd in the series. Smart. Sassy. Fun. Wish there were more like this!
Breena O’Rylee is back, still training with the Hollows Group, still not sure if she should lust over Bad Boy Crash or her ex-husband’s cousin Corb. Oh, and she is still determined to buy her Gran’s house. It is that determination to get back that house that sends Brenna on down dark alleys, into “in-betweens” and tangling with fairies to get the funds she needs. Ah, another day in the life for Breena!
When I read the first book in this series, I liked it. I liked it a lot. But this second book has really fired me up! Breena is starting to find out what she is made of, and it’s not all sugar and spice – she is kicking it and taking no prisoners! As she is getting stronger, her group of trusted friends grows as well. And those friends are seriously a lot of fun – an emotional River Maid, a gentle Bigfoot shifter and a coquettish half siren to name some – and just add just enough humor to balance out the dark magic swirling around. It is whetting my appetite for the next Breena’s mission!
A rating. This series is just the best…BUT you need to read the books in order, so start with book #1, Midlife Bounty Hunter. I can’t wait for more!
HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
