Great read! what a hoot! great characters! love the recovery quotes!
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved this book. I was a little hesitant at first due to all the “old” jokes being thrown about but I absolutely loved Breena. She was funny and although she may not be in her prime she used her brain and skills to do what she was born and raised to do. True to Shannon Mayer’s form there were twists and turns that you would not expect throughout the entire book.
On the one hand Breena is very capable and quickly becomes surprisingly good at her job, on the other hand she’s washed up, over the hill and is incapable of handling her private life. Also, as I understood it, the group that is promoting these books is supposed to celebrate the mid-life woman. In this book the other characters and the main character puts herself down constantly, over and over and over again. Some explanation is given by the main character that the constant psychological abuse for years by her husband gave her a poor opinion of herself, yet she comes across as a rather confident, aggressive individual to the other characters in this story. Which is it? Why isn’t she being more proactive in seeking help with the situation her ex has put her in? all of this is responsible for my removing two stars.
The paranormal, action part of the story keeps it at 3 stars. I really liked the story line, characters and world building. Feish, Robert (hopefully we learn more about him) and Jinx were inventive.
I love it, this book is life! No for real, hear me out. The story flowed effortlessly and held my interest throughout. It was funny and totally entertaining. Here’s the kicker, our heroine is over 40 and basically obsolete in the world because she gave her best years to a guy. If that doesn’t ring true to a lot of us. It was a nice change being able to completely relate to a character. Now add in a paranormal twist and we’re having some fun!
I also love how this book is helping to introduce a genre that is focused on the rest of us out there. The ones that are a little worse for wear and so much wiser for it. Midlife women. We may be down but we are far from out. I’m excited for this series and I am here for it!!
audiobook review: Love this story! Entertaining story with a 40+ year old heroine. Funny and interesting scenes. The characters are hard but likable, even the edgy men. Lauren Fortgang did a wonderful job bring this story to life and by providing unique voices and appropriate tone inflections for each scene! I won a copy of this audiobook in a giveaway and am leaving this voluntary review.
NOTE: This book has been renamed Midlife Bounty Hunter.
A rating. I loved this book. I finished it and immediately dove into book #2…definitely not ready for the story to stop yet.
Highly recommend!

Grave Magic Bounty: The Forty Proof Series, Book #1
Breena is 41 years old, she’s been put on her butt HARD by ex’s duplicitous ways during their divorce. He’s managed to saddle her with all of his debts & stolen her Grandmother’s house out from under her!! She needs to earn a lot of money & fast if she stands a chance of buying it back some how. So she takes up the chance to earn up $20,000 a month working for a supernatural bounty hunter agency!
Her hearts all in, her body definitely is not & her brain is 50/50. But the more she’s dismissed, ridiculed & talked down to by the men surrounding her, the more determined she becomes to make it in the world her Grandmother had raised her in, that she truly regrets turning her back on for her ex! As it turns out age brings wisdom & she’s a darn natural at this line of work, she just needs a constant flow of pain medication, Oh and some help with her raging hormonal libido wouldn’t go amiss either!! The eye candy she’s dealing with is driving her to distraction.
I really hope she gets her home back from ‘Himself’ & he gets karmic payment for all he’s tried to pull!! I felt every ache & pain, each ounce of Breena’s frustration & her self doubt too. But I also loved seeing her dawning realisation that she didn’t need or want anyone’s permission to be who she was, She’s a bad@ss bitch that’s kicking @rse and taking names!! A snarkfest of deliciousness is what this story is!

This is a new series from Shannon and it’s about a kick ass heroine over the age of 40, who is out of shape and divorced and doesn’t give no ducks.. Bree is 41, out of shape just recently divorced, she moves back to her home town and starts a new job but this job is not all that it seems and she makes new friends in the process oh and has some sexy co workers.. This new series is fun, action packed and witty.. I can’t wait to read the next book..
I really enjoyed this book. This is one of those books that you don’t want to put down until it is finished. I am eagerly anticipating the next book in the series.
A joyous roller coaster ride of twists & turns….can’t wait for the next!!
Quite honestly one of the most enjoyable books, I have read… Get ready for a ride! This book had so many twists & turns… Just when I thought I had it all figured out, Breena is hit with another plot twist! But just because you’re 41 & a woman, doesn’t mean you should be counted out! This book was a lot of fun to read, & she really wrote great characters, from Breena to the others she interacts with, through out the book. Though I an not new to the PFW novels, having now devoured most of them… Shannon Mayer is new to me. I had put off reading this one, thinking it sounded kind of dark. Boy was I wrong! It was anything, but! Yes, she is dealing with the shadow world & skeletons &… but it is done in such a lite manner, with many hilarious tuns, that you’re kept on the edge of your seat. I loved how she ended it, with enough anticipation to make you want to continue the story, without gutting you with a kick to the stomach, cliffhanger. Can’t wait to read more series by her!
What a story! I loved reading this book, it was funny, unpredictable and just a joy to read!
Breena O’Rylee might be in her 40’s but really, she’s in her prime. After the loss of her grandmother, the divorce and associated debts, Breena is determined to keep kicking ~ in the lady bits if need be! I loved the characters, (especially Robert!) the world building and again, the sense of just not knowing what’s going to happen next! Can’t wait for book 2!!
Wow, what a fun ride! I liked the way the main character, Breena, was portrayed. The story was original, engrossing, and fun to read. I just loved the secondary characters and Breena’s friends: Robert, Feish, and Eric, along with her Gran. I’m looking forward to the next one and more of these characters!
Finally a book where the main character doesn’t magically heal after getting hurt. Even with the paranormal and magic creatures running around. There are a couple too many mentions about being old, a few less would have been better. But a great read for sure. The world and characters are entertaining keeping the pages turning.
Oh my god! I’m in love with this new series! A heroine that kicks butt and works at it and pushes herself everyday for something she wants and a whole bunch of major hotness all around her! Paranormal species coming out of my ears and characters that take in it another level. Way to freaking go! I. Loved. Every. Minute. I. Could. Not. Put. It. Down! I do not know how I can possibly wait for the next one! This series could go on forever and I would love it!
Grave Magic Bounty by Shannon Mayer is fantastic first in the Fort Proof Series!!
Breena, a 41 year old divorcee returns home to Savannah and to the world of shadows that she left behind.
I love how sassy and strong she is. Such an amazing and original storyline and the characters are phenomenal! Non stop action, chaos and antics. I was laughing out loud throughout!!
Cant wait for more
Experience Beats Youth
Breena O’Rylee has a special skill, one she has hidden for many years but now she needs to embrace it again.
Determined to take her life back after a nasty split from her husband she moves back to Savannah to her childhood home (a home her ex stole from her), she has to get it back.
Back in Savannah rooming with her ex’s cousin she takes a job working within the shadow world. Things that are unseen by humans live in the shadow world, things she has seen her whole life.
There is a lot of money to be made as a spirit bounty hunter and she needs a lot of money to take back what was stolen from her. Age be damned, along with her new BFF Robert who just happens to be a skeleton she is about to take on the world of the undead.
Lets hear it for determined menopausal women!
Another amazing book by Shannon Mayer! I am once again in love with a series, but now the wait for another is going to KILL me! Bree is everything I would expect for a middle aged kickass female and I am extremely excited that she has flaws and isn’t perfect! It’s refreshing to read a story like that and know that the main character is just another human female, struggling with her midlife crisis. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next one and I hope we have it soon!!!
Really Ducking Awesome!!
There wasn’t a single thing about this book I didn’t love! Breena is this amazing blend of kick butt woman who takes no crap mixed with a somewhat insecure one who’s been somewhat beaten down for half her life and now is constantly devalued by many around her for being “too old”. With all the awesomeness she still manages to dish out despite all this, I cannot wait to see what she’s capable of once she really hits her stride in the next book in the series (and hopefully several more after that!).
Shannon Mayer “Grave Magic Bounty” (Forty Proof #1) is a wonderfully original and quirky look at our heroine who is over 40 and starting over. I pissed myself laughing out loud all the way through. Shannon is a loose cannon when she writes and trust me you would not want her any other way. Shannon and the other Fab 13 are taking the world by storm by showing that being over 40 does not mean the end of life but something to be celebrated, pee pads and all. This brilliant story takes us on a journey where Breena finds herself in the most unlikely of situations and it is hard not to feel like you are on the run with her every step of the way. With laughter and magic, ex husbands and demons, leprechauns, werewolves, skeletons and more and you have everything you could ever want in a story, now you just need a bottle of wine and a quiet place to lose yourself in Shannon’s fantastic writing. Bring on the next book.
Forty is the new 20 right? Just ask Breena O’Rylee, after a few life changing events bring her home to Savannah, she has an opportunity to pick up where she left off so many years ago. This newest Shannon Mayer book will keep you on your toes, the whole time. Get ready to laugh your tush off and jump into the thick of the supernatural world.
