Midlife Bounty Hunter is book one in the Forty Proof series by Shannon Mayer.
Breena is a 41 year old heroine starting over. Her ex-husband has done a number and saddled her with all his debt and stolen her Grandmother’s house out from under her. She needs money and fast.
I liked Breena. I could relate to her and some of her life experience. I liked that she’s smart and resourceful. At times she did come across as a bit whinny, but the humor took me away.
I liked Robert. He’s the skeleton that Breena befriends in the cemetery on her way to an interesting interview. We meet a verity of supernaturals and are treated to lots of funny moments, magic, demons, an annoying ex-husband, and more.
This story takes us on a journey. Breena finds herself in the most unlikely of situations and it is hard not to feel like you with her every step of the way.
Midlife Bounty Hunter is a nice start to the Forty Proof series and I can’t wait to read on and see what happens next. It’s an entertaining read!
Rated: 3.5 Stars
Kicking butt, taking names, and running on pain killers. You’re never too old to take on danger. Shannon Mayer has proven herself, yet again, to be a master storyteller in her newest paranormal women’s fiction series.
I ducking love this series SO MUCH!
Absolutely loved this storey!!! There are some interesting characters and some really funny moments plus many twists and turns to keep you guessing, very well written, 100% captivating and thoroughly enjoyable. This is one of the best books from the PWF camp for those like me who prefer UF to PR.
You guys might have noticed by now that Shannon Mayer is one of my favorite authors. She recently got together with a group of 12 other authors (the Fab13) to create the Women’s Paranormal Fiction group. #PWF for short. She brought her signature vivid character creation and superb world-building to this book as she has all her others. Breena is a fantastical mid-life lady that most of us who are anywhere near that age bracket will identify with. Snarky and funny, she leads the charge through the tale, but her supporting cast of characters are just as amazing. I absolutely loved it, and if you haven’t picked it up yet, I highly recommend you do so!
Breena is now divorced from a cad who has taken her gran’s house from her and left her with all his debt. He now plans to sell the house. His cousin is allowing her to stay with him after he drunkenly offered. His friend has offered her a job and she is now at the gates of a cemetery for it~ She has made a new friend, Robert, a skeleton. Her gran protected the Shadow World and had been training her before Himself (the ex). She will have to pass a test, survive the training and rely on her instincts and her gran’s ghost to save a lot of people from something sinister~ Where will it get her? Who will be her new loyal friends? Who are the men who will become interested in her? And who said at her age, that women are no longer worth anything? A great new hilarious series~
Listened to the audiobook and this is turning into one of my favorite new series by Shannon, character development is great but love the older (I hate to say that ) take on the hero. Lots of twists and turns excited to see where she goes.
Finally a series with an older woman that makes me laugh out loud and the paranormal fun to keep me entertained the rest of the time. But seriously, I love all of Shannon Meyer’s books, she writes everything in such a way that you can’t event think about anything else until you get all the way through. Can’t wait to read the next one!
I’m on the second book in this series and I love the original storylines and hilarious characters – both living and dead!
So much fun reading a paranormal book where the main character is my age! Totally hooked.
Shannon Mayer has brought, in my opinion, a game changer! This first in series book is in a class all it’s own, quite literally. PWF is a new subset in the literary world that focuses on women who are older, wiser, and quite frankly more bad*ss in their own rights. Shannon Mayer’s typical brand of magic and sass are found all throughout Midlife Bounty Hunter but with one key change, Breena O’Rylee is “old” but don’t let her number fool you, after a jerk ex-husband ran her through the mud and left her with nothing she moves back to her childhood hometown to heal and start new. This time though, Breena is older, wiser and has no time for anyone’s crap.
“A woman of age has far more power and strength than anyone else. Far more than anyone will give you credit for, and that makes you dangerous. Because no matter how amazing you are, they will always underestimate you.”
I can’t wait to see what comes next in Mayer’s 40 proof series!
It was a well written book with a lot of action but it was depressing. Breena is a truly jaded woman and she complains about it a lot. Not to mention she completely feels sorry for herself. I’m going to read the next one, I’m hoping her character starts to shine. I just didn’t feel like she did in this one.
This was my first book I’ve read by Shannon Meyer and, wow, she didn’t disappoint. I especially loved the idea of a 40+ heroine. I highly recommend and I’m already reading book 2.
The best things about this book:
A kick-butt female lead over forty. (She sometimes seems closer to fifty to me, but individual capabilities vary a lot with age.)
She’s fierce. She’s angry. These things fuel her fight, but she is also very funny.
Despite her anger at the world (and men in particular) she is quick to make friends and the value of friendship is greatly celebrated.
This series has loads of action, weird magic, hot guys, and wonderful diverse characters.
Definitely a fun read about a woman of a certain age who needs to reclaim her authentic, magical self. Breena has a few miles on her and she’s reached the age of invisibility for women. She’s been through the wringer after a bad divorce, is over-weight and out of shape, and feels every little ding life’s given her. But she’s not giving up. She’s a character with great spirit and lots of humor. I look forward to reading more.
Mystery and mayhem.
Over the hill at forty? Breena thinks she is after a dreadful divorce that has left her with literally nothing. She returns to Savannah where she grew up with her grandmother who taught her all she could about the shadow world. She finds herself up to the neck in that world. There is mystery, killings and humor in this story.
Exciting and utterly thrilling!
This is a very exciting, suspenseful, intriguing and highly entertaining story that kept me captivated and on the edge of my seat from beginning to end.
The characters are funny, witty and some are even super sexy. Breena is my new superhero. She’s a refreshing character who has street smarts, she’s sassy and highly enjoyable to read. I have a feeling that she is going to be taking us on some very funny and intense wild rides in this incredible new series.
Loved this line: “So why the hell not? Carry forth, good man and let the chips fall where they may. I’ve a feeling I was born for this.”
I am super excited for the rest of this series. I can’t wait to read what Breena gets herself into next! Fantastic writing Shannon Mayer!
This was such a good book! I was hooked from page 1. The storyline was well written, the characters were great and there was so many twists and turns in this book that you couldn’t even guess how it would end. It held my interest throughout the story and I had a hard time putting it down.
Paranormal Women’s Fiction is a relatively new sub-genre. They’re entertaining stories about life after 40 with a fantasy twist. This series was great fun to read. I can’t wait for the next one.
Such a fun read, I had to immediately go on to book 2!
