It is 1919 in Siberia. Michal—a young, sheltered girl—has eyes for a man other than her betrothed. For a young girl growing up in a traditional Jewish settlement, an arranged marriage is a fact of life. However, destiny, it seems, has other plans for Michal. When a Cossack pogrom invades her small village, the protected life Michal has grown accustomed to and loves will crumble before her eyes. … eyes. Everything she knows is gone and she is forced to leave her home and embark on a journey to Berlin with the man she thought she wanted.
Michal faces love, loss, and heartache because she is harboring a secret that threatens to destroy her every attempt at happiness. But over the next fourteen tumultuous years, during the peak of the Weimar Republic, she learns she is willing to do anything to have the love she longs for and to protect her family.
However, it is now 1933. Life in Berlin is changing, especially for the Jews. Dark storm clouds are looming on the horizon. Adolf Hitler is about to become the chancellor of Germany, and that will change everything for Michal forever.

Liked the characters, and changes which affected her life
Not one of Kagan’s best.
This is one in a series of Holocaust books that follow a family and several generations thru Hitlers war on Jews
being a fan of WWII things, this book and the sequels to it are really really good. makes you think, and at times is very sad considering all the lives lost and the survivors who never found out what happened to their loved ones for certain.
I loved this book. Characters were interesting.
The story of Jews in the early days of Hilter was insightful. Can’t wait to read the next in the series.
I loved this book. A great historical story with well developed characters. I read all books in the series and still didn’t want the story to end. The story and characters stayed with me for several days after finishing the last book. I highly recommend all of her books.
Loved the book but next chapter missing
It showed the many twists and turns of life and there is always hope!
Can’t wait for the sequel.
Excellent book until ending was “to be continued” in the sequel.
Enjoyed this historical tale as well as other books by this author.
Interesting but not great literature.
Seems like the author left us in the middle of the story. It didn’t end…., just quit.
interesting view of historical times in Europe regarding the Jewish nation
Loved the book loved the whole series of this family in this book
The content was good, the ending, awful unless you want to read the next book for maybe some sort of conclusion.
This book was not a complete book.
I enjoyed this book right from the very first page till the very last page. It had a little bit of everything from tragic to haunting to being original and inspirational.
Great historical fiction for those interested in WWII and/or Jewish history
