It is 1919 in Siberia. Michal—a young, sheltered girl—has eyes for a man other than her betrothed. For a young girl growing up in a traditional Jewish settlement, an arranged marriage is a fact of life. However, destiny, it seems, has other plans for Michal. When a Cossack pogrom invades her small village, the protected life Michal has grown accustomed to and loves will crumble before her eyes. … eyes. Everything she knows is gone and she is forced to leave her home and embark on a journey to Berlin with the man she thought she wanted.
Michal faces love, loss, and heartache because she is harboring a secret that threatens to destroy her every attempt at happiness. But over the next fourteen tumultuous years, during the peak of the Weimar Republic, she learns she is willing to do anything to have the love she longs for and to protect her family.
However, it is now 1933. Life in Berlin is changing, especially for the Jews. Dark storm clouds are looming on the horizon. Adolf Hitler is about to become the chancellor of Germany, and that will change everything for Michal forever.

A young Jewish woman from a sheltered life in a rural village is thrown into life in cosmopolitan Berlin pre WW2 and finds that the city changes her in ways she is not always happy about.
Truly awful writing. I might have made it through 10 pages.
Fast paced and enjoyable.
I think in the last review I had read 5 of her books, I just went back to find I have already read over 10, not 5. About to read my 11th book. Roberta Kragan is that good.
I’ve read all of her books! She’s fantastic!!!!!
It told the story of what Jews inRusdia had to endure & how hard it was to emigrate to another country
Very interesting and well presented
I can’t wait to read the rest of the books in this series.
could not put the book down.
Too brutal. Quit before finishing.
Liked it
Another of Kagans’ books that I have enjoyed
A good period piece. I learned how life for women was very difficult and women should not take their freedom for granted.
I had hopes for this, but it wasn’t terribly well written and the plot had drama, in a heavy-handed moralizing sort of way, but never coalesced. I suppose if I read the next in the series it might, but the first didn’t motivate me to continue.
Beautifully written page turner, extremely well developed characters

The author of the whole series is excellent.
I thought that the book was poorly written and had many grammatical errors. The story was just okay, but nothing new and original.
I loved the series and would recommend to anyone who enjoys historical fiction, this covers the Nazi’s and Holocast.
A historical fiction that felt like it could have really happneed
