It is 1919 in Siberia. Michal—a young, sheltered girl—has eyes for a man other than her betrothed. For a young girl growing up in a traditional Jewish settlement, an arranged marriage is a fact of life. However, destiny, it seems, has other plans for Michal. When a Cossack pogrom invades her small village, the protected life Michal has grown accustomed to and loves will crumble before her eyes. … eyes. Everything she knows is gone and she is forced to leave her home and embark on a journey to Berlin with the man she thought she wanted.
Michal faces love, loss, and heartache because she is harboring a secret that threatens to destroy her every attempt at happiness. But over the next fourteen tumultuous years, during the peak of the Weimar Republic, she learns she is willing to do anything to have the love she longs for and to protect her family.
However, it is now 1933. Life in Berlin is changing, especially for the Jews. Dark storm clouds are looming on the horizon. Adolf Hitler is about to become the chancellor of Germany, and that will change everything for Michal forever.

Followed history
I’m very interested in stories about the Holocaust. This well researched book offers an authentic example of the Europe of the first half of the 20th century. At times very hard to read, one comes to care about the characters.
Makes you wonder how someone survives so much trauma. Have read 2 of Roberta’s books now and will read more.
I was engrossed from the first page and can’t wait to read the second book watch over my child
It was an ok read. It tended to be repetitious in it’s story line and tale. And at times, overly wordy.
Gives a very real feel of the anxiety of the Jews during the rise of Hitler.
I like the way she went back to her husband, and beliefs.
Love this author
This is my first review and I had to write it.
I couldn’t put this book down. I was immersed in it from start to finish. I highly recommend it!
Avid Reader
I did not realize it was part of a several; book series and it just abruptly ended. I was very disappointed.
Thought it needed a good editor.
If I would want to read porn (which I don’t) this might be good for some folks..BUT not me
This book has a compelling story and at first, it was hard to put it down. The historical period and the setting provide many heart rending stories, but at times the narrative became wooden, even though the plot was gripping. The characters lacked life. The final and fatal flaw was that there was no resolution. Even though this a series, each book needs to stand on its own. Otherwise it is a multi volume book. I would like to know how the story ends. Despite the bad writing, I did engage and care about the characters. But I will not.
Informative and well written, describing a time in recent history which should never have happened. Gave me great insights.
.
Was sorry to find that this was part of a series.
don’t know if I will find the rest of the series as interesting.
This is one of the very rare times when I have started a book and found myself reading other books in between. I found this to so predictable and so much like this genre of book that I got tired of knowing before it happened what was going to happen. I still have not finished it and don’t know if I ever will, which is extremely rare for me! I would recommend only if it is a subject that you are absolutely not familiar with!
Author needs to study more about Jewish holidays. Hanuka is a minor holiday, but this author made it seem like a major holiday with exchange of gifts???
It wasn’t what I expected
One of the worst I have ever read. So many historical errors. Michal was never a name used by the orthodox and Taavi…not Hebrew, not Yiddish, ???”??:?
Left me hanging at the end
