This is the second part of the Dark Sea Academy trilogy, and if you haven’t read Mermaid’s Song, you’ll want to do that first. The following description contains spoilers for the first book. What’s the point of being a princess if the whole kingdom hates you?Being a royal should make my life easier, but it only compounds my problems. When my father, the new King of Valora, succeeded the beloved … my father, the new King of Valora, succeeded the beloved King Tiberius, many of his subjects believed he killed my uncle just to gain the throne. His new policies only make the people hate him more.
Just my luck, they transfer their loathing onto me.
Even my best friend and my boyfriend aren’t enough of a buffer, and I’m continually fending off verbal, and sometimes physical, attacks.
That’s when my powers start growing…
When no one at the academy can—or will—help me learn about my new abilities, I begin to research them on my own. Modern answers seem to be entwined with a terrifying ancient legend.
If the lore is true, my destiny is far more tragic than my present problems. And I don’t know if I can change it.
Or if I should even try.

Super book
Mermaid’s Heart is the second book in the Dark Sea Academy series by Stacy Claflin.
This book picked up right where Mermaid’s Song left off with Marra having to deal with her father’s shocking announcement.
I wasn’t sure whether a series about a high school aged main character would keep my interest, but there is so much going on that I can’t wait for the next book to see what Marra learns about her destiny and her family issues.

This second book is even more enchanting than the first book (Mermaid’s Song – The Dark Sea Academy Series)…and you have to read the first one as it presages and continues with the threads already established. You will jump into the thick of things on the first page. Surprises, intrigue, highs, and lows will keep you up at night just to discover what’s next. Marra continues to struggle with labyrinthine situations, with both friends and foes. She is becoming more comfortable with her multiple identities and roles. As usual, the author Stacy Claflin excels in her storytelling! Highly recommend!!!
I received a free review copy and have volunteered to leave an honest review. I like this book even more than book one, Mermaid’s Song! It’s has much more drama and action to keep you turning the pages! I can’t wait for book three!!
Marra’s life is completely upside-down. Her father, the new King of Valora is as hated as his older twin brother King Tiberius was loved. If it wasn’t bad enough that the people believe he killed his brother to get the throne, he decided to take on a second wife and banished her mom. Now he’s enacting all sorts of laws so bad the merpeople are actually rioting in the streets. Plus, her future stepmother has enrolled her in a major sparring competition and the academy’s beauty pageant! However, all of this is insignificant compared to the fact Marra seems to be the modern-day heir to the legendary Queen Sirena! At least she has her best friend Halen and her love Bash to help her navigate these new waters.
This series is a roller coaster of non-stop action. Marra never has a dull moment. I did enjoy this book more than the first one but I am still struggling with Marra. She is snarky at the worst times, gets sidetracked on the little things while ignoring more important ones, and forgiving when she shouldn’t be. I understand she’s had so much upheaval in her recent life and so many things thrown her way but she could do so much better. I also feel like she allows herself to be manipulated at times when she should take a stand. The side characters are a mixed bag. Bash is delicious, Halen is a true friend, the band members seem great while Earwyn and her dogfish are horrid, Mr. Brand is ridiculous and the King and Mrs. Middlebrooks are gross.
In my opinion, the book is at it’s best when the focus was on the legend of Queen Sirena, the Ayers power, and Marra’s own magic. The history is fantastic and the mystery surrounding Marra is compelling. I wish we had more wordbuilding in the mer-society. It’s really cool. The king storyline was good but left me with some questions about potential inconsistencies and the Bash/Marra storyline is a little rushed but enjoyable. I’m hoping for everything to come together in book three.
Amazing how life can change in a heartbeat. Marra is loosing her mother, his father isn’t getting married with her Academy’s dean and everyone’s hates her because her father ‘s action as a king. But if the Queen SIrena ‘s legend is true amarra will kill her father to gain her full power. Can anything go wrong again in Marra’s life? A rollercoaster of emotions. I can’t get enough of this series! I love the writing style, the mystery, the clues given here and there to help fill in the blanks and more pieces to complete the puzzle.
I knew when Marra’s powers didn’t grow what was happening. I won’t give any spoilers away, but……you need to grab a copy of this book (series) to meet & follow Marra, Emery, Drake, Halen, Bash, Tibierias and others under the sea.
