While on a camping trip, Ted Kerasote met a dog—a Labrador mix—who was living on his own in the wild. They became attached to each other, and Kerasote decided to name the dog Merle and bring him home. There, he realized that Merle’s native intelligence would be diminished by living exclusively in the human world. He put a dog door in his house so Merle could live both outside and in. A deeply … deeply touching portrait of a remarkable dog and his relationship with the author, Merle’s Door explores the issues that all animals and their human companions face as their lives intertwine, bringing to bear the latest research into animal consciousness and behavior as well as insights into the origins and evolution of the human-dog partnership. Merle showed Kerasote how dogs might live if they were allowed to make more of their own decisions, and Kerasote suggests how these lessons can be applied universally.

Great book for a dog lover like me.
I was delighted to find a book about a subject that I often consider – what would dogs do if we did not treat them as pets? Well written. Melds research with personal experience.
If you like dogs you should like this
This is a remarkable book, by a remarkable writer, about the remarkable dog you always wished was yours.
Lots of dog history…and tale of a found dog and how he taught the author many life lessons over the years.
Loved it. Laughs. Cried. Cried some more. Did not want the book to end.
I thought it was a wonderful story. I can’t believe it made me cry….twice.
I had a hard time really getting attached to the plot and a lot because I disagreed strongly to the authors views on human and animals places in this world ,I actually deleted it halfway throigh
It was easy for me to put this book down after 4 chapters. The author seems to desire to impress the readers with the character’s vocabulary and intelligence and not interested in telling a story for the reader.
This is one of my all-time favorite books and I recommend it to everyone I know that reads. It was very well written, both editorially and content, making an enjoyable and easy read, Furthermore, I fell in love with Merle. What makes this quite unusual is that I don’t even own a dog. I also liked the people and and the way they interacted with …
Great read. A must if you like dogs.
Being a pet lover I thouroly enjoyed reading it.
great great dog, with a wonderful person who let Merle be all he could be
If you love dogs you will like this book. There are a number of observations and analogies, albeit all the author’s opinion, that give, if not insight, at least pause for consideration on the partnership that is man and his canine companion. A good deal of the book is presented in dry recitation of events and emotions, but frequently enough the …
