He survived Auschwitz but now Simon Mendelevski has to find out who betrayed his familySeptember 1945. Auschwitz survivor Simon Mendelevski, penniless and unkempt, returns to Amsterdam in a desperate search for his family, friends and neighbours. Simon meets two Dutch women, both of whom have also suffered. One, known to him before the war, is anxious to make amends for what she perceives as a … amends for what she perceives as a failure by her fellow citizens to protect the Jewish population while easing the pain of her own loss. The other arrived in the city after the bombing of Rotterdam in May 1940 during which she lost a limb.
He searches for the address where he and his Jewish family were hidden prior to their arrest by the Nazis for anything tangible connected to his family, and for whoever betrayed them. Only after finding answers can he start to rebuild his life.

Wonderful book and well written. Would like to read more books by the Author.
It was enlightening to learn how far-reaching Hitler’s destructive enforcers went to round up and destroy Jews – who would have thought Denmark was included in this madman’s blood thirsty plans. It was heart-warming to see that there were also good people who sought to protect and assist the affected victims.
I really enjoyed this book. It gave such a good idea if what it was like to reintegrate after surviving a concentrationcamp. This is the first book I’ve read that did. I liked the characters and could feel their emotions. Highly recommend this book.
I enjoyed it very much
This is an interesting read.
Antisemitism did not disappear from Holland post WWII, but many Dutch were willing to help the Jewish community .
It captures the mood and thinking (good and bad) of that era with an amazing ammount of dayly or weekly factual data. The author is clearly familiar with Amsterdam after the post second World War
While I’ve read many WWII stories, I have new understanding of the tensions between native Dutch and those who were Nazi sympathizers. This is truly a page-turner.
A powerful read!
Excellent read, hard to imagine living through the horrors but finding help!!
Enjoyed it very much!
Touching, wholly believable, and vividly descriptive.
I’ve read many books on the Holocaust but this one was approached from a completely different direction. It’s the story of a concentration camp survivor trying to restore his life to a semblance of normalcy. The characters were strong and sympathetic but not pathetic. I enjoyed the book very much and highly recommend it.
Great book!
Well told story of the suffering of the Jewish people during WWII.
Well done
This book gave another view of what went on in Europe during and after WWII. It was most informative and well written. It should be put on a list of “Must Read” books for young and old.
Loved this historical fiction story. Learned a lot.
Eventually, I began to skim this book… Not written very well or riveting.
Tremendous book. Tremendous. I noticed someone gave it less than 5 stars. No chance. If you like historical fiction and/or books about the what the Nazi’s did to the Jewish population, read this book. Or, if you just like great books, read it.
