Few dared live as close to the border as us. Not even the long-standing peace treaty between our two nations could make people forget how the savage Men of the North used to hunt down and kidnap women here centuries ago.If only Devina hadn’t been so damned curious by nature, she would have never picked up that letter thrown across the Northern wall. Now, she is horrified to see that it’s from a … that it’s from a teenage girl who is only weeks away from being auctioned off in a bridal tournament. With no time to waste, Devina is determined to help the girl escape, even if it means putting herself in danger and finding a way into the dangerous Northlands.
Forbidden Letters is a stand-alone prequel to Elin Peer’s wildly popular dystopian romance series, Men of the North which takes place in the future where a female council rule the entire world, except for an area in the North where a group of strong alpha males are in control.

Quite simply this is Elin Peer at her very best
Whilst we’ve actually seen the end of the Men of the North series, this prequel gives us some insight into how and why the Motlanders and the Northmen grew so far apart. Elin’s narrative is not only that of a love story but also a warning of how divided we can become over the simplest of issues. I adored this story and, if like me, you have read the rest of the series, it was so enlightening. It shows a time when the differences between the two nations were actually much less. A missed opportunity to build bridges rather than walls. Knowing the love of two very wonderful people led to even more suspicion, distrust and a worsening of relations between the Motherlands and the North was, at times, heartbreaking. A rather chilling analogy to so much of human history where something good has been twisted into something to fear.
Forbidden Letters is a beautiful story of love across the divide but also a warning of what happens when we allow prejudice and fear to lead our decision making. Whilst it is an amazing work of fiction, it also draws some eerie and foreboding parallels to the political situation in so many countries at the moment, my own included. Yet at no point does this ever feel as though the author is trying to force her views on us, but it does open ones eyes and elicit deeper contemplation at times. It’s also one heck of an emotion packed, full of feels love story.
For some reason Devina reminded me of Christina, though she was a much ‘freer’ Motlander due to living in a different era. She had the caring-sharing ethos of the Motherlands, but was much less of a conformer to societal expectations and so much more of a free thinker. Tyton was perhaps more like Finn, a much milder N’man than some of the later protagonists. I totally and utterly fell in love with this pair, thankfully they get a much better ending than Romeo and Juliet did, even though I consider their love story to be just as wonderful as that of the star-crossed lovers.
This book took me through the gamut of emotions with a story that has carved itself a special place within my heart. I won’t quote them, because of spoilers, but some of those lines in the epilogue were like a punch to the gut. I could feel them squeezing my heart!
I really can’t recommend this book enough. The writing, the story, the pace and the characters do not disappoint but are all outstanding.
This was a great book. I can’t wait to read the series!!! Wonderful, original story line!!!!
Best book ever. Read it entirely, I couldn’t put it down. The characters were determined, sexy, and the author development of each one only added to their appeal. Highly recommend.
Forbidden Letters is a prequel to the ten book series Men of the North that tells a story set 16 decades after the Toxic War that wiped out all but 1.5 million people of the earth’s 7+billion. But it also takes place nearly two hundred years before the series. Although the series needs to be read in order, this book can be read either before or after the series. Dystopian, science fiction, and romance, this book, like the others, is about relationships: the first of the mix between a Motlander (culture vastly different than prewar, controlled by women) and a Northlander (differs from prewar culture mostly because of its lack of women, being made up of men who won’t be ruled by females). The story of Devina and Tyton caused the pages to fly! This book had me laughing, admiring the Heroine, wanting the Hero for myself, but with a lot of crying. Crying from loss, crying because relationships are hard (even more so with cultural differences), crying because ruling politics can never suit everybody, gender equality will always be a problem, and freedom is so costly! And on top of it all, uncontrollable circumstances are just too hard. Elin Peer knows how to deliver dangerous adventures, witty philosophical dialogue, and sexy love-making in grand style.
I don’t know what I expected when I started reading this but as usual this author has floored me and knocks it out the park. We get a chance to go back before Khan and his family, before the wall came tumbling down. Before all of the changes and merging of these two different cultures. It’s more than a story of letters going over the wall, it’s about overcoming preconceived notions and closed minds. Well at least that’s part of it. She’s lost her family and now she’s losing her freedom. He’s the last of his siblings that remains single and has already decided he won’t fight in the next tournament. Together through crazy circumstances they find a way. But that’s only part of the story. I love the women in this family they are true blue women not afraid to stand up for their men and she’s a perfect addition. As usual with this author it’s always so much more than a love story, and more than the main characters. Her books only leave you wanting more because it’s never enough and you never want it to end.
Forbidden Letters was quite an enjoyable read, I like the way that Devina was willing to go against everything she believed in to go save someone she thought was being abused even though she was very naive. But when she meets Tyton she is terrified but something about him makes her feel safe. I love the story line and the characters kept you reading . Romantic suspense. I received an ARC by author without obligation. I am providing an honest review.
This is a fantastic read. I loved it from start to finish, this read grabbed me right from the start and kept me on the edge of my seat. I could not put the book down. The World building is fantastic as well as bringing out the Characters. I love Devinas Character and her will power. This is definitely a must read.

This book takes us back in time way before our beloved N Men were born. Devina finds a letter from a young girl from the Northland on the other side of the wall. She is determined to help her escape what she thinks is a horrible fate. This book kept me on the edge of my seat wondering how in the world there would be a happily ever after under these circumstances. Ms Peer always gives us a great love story, wonderful characters that you can’t help but root for, humor, and adventure. Even though I’m sad to see this series end I would tell anyone who is hesitant to read these books to jump right in. You will not regret it. I’m looking forward to what she comes up with next.
Wow. Elin Peer is truly a wonderful person as well as a great author. She gave us this incredible 10 book series called Men of the North. But that wasn’t enough for us fans. So what did she do? She gifted us with a bonus prequel. A bonus prequel that is a full length book, mind you. None of that novella stuff! And what a great story is it. It makes me want to go back and start all over again. In fact, I think that is what I’m going to do now. This will help to keep me busy while we wait for the next series to begin!
Hundred plus years after power greedy men nearly destroyed earth and humanity, people have rebuild and formed the Northlands and Motherlands. Northlands are ruled by cruel men and Motherlands by females. During this period lots of things are forbidden, even to cross the border, but that does not stop a curious brave Mothlander. Forbidden Letters is like an appetiser and the 10 books in the Men of the North series is the main course. I highly recommend this series and would like the thank Elin Peer for taking us on a journey of romance, humour, mystery and adventure to the imagery world of the Men of the North.
I like this series. Devina finds a letter in a bottle on her side of the wall. Bravely, she goes to the other side to rescue a 15-year- old girl whom she believes is being forced to marry. She meets Tyton there. I like the the way the author built the world’s in which each of them lives. Devina and Tyton learn many of the things they believed about the other’s country are untrue. Both countries have pros and cons. Devina stands up to the Northmen. I like the surprise of how the tyrant of the North is taken care of. We also see how the Motherlands react to what they consider bad influences on their people band society.
This book sets up the plot for the hole series of
Men of the north.
Right from the very first word it was impossible to put down.
It has an amazing plot and well developed characters.
I definitely recommend this book and the hole series.
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
Received ARC copy for my honest review. Tyton from the Northlands meets Devina from the Motherlands. This is their story, how they meet and the cultural differences they face as they fall in love. Even though Forbidden Letters was written as the last book of the series, it can be read either at the end or the beginning, this novel tells us how it all started. Thank you Elin Peer for a wonderful series.
How can it be over? This book is a prequel to the Men of the North series and it was fantastic. Being back the the future of earth again and engaging with the men of the North gives the reader a version of a possible future of our world. The division of men and women, the women think they have it figured and but is it really personal freedom. The men in the North love their freedom to swear, drink, and ight for the love of a woman. A mysterious bottle throw overn the wall that divides them is the start of an amazing journey of Devina and Tyton. Their relationship starts out a bit rough, but the pure honesty of their letters and using it as a reason for Davina’s book she is writing has kept them close. With Tytons sister having her tournament was a chance for Davina to sneak over and see their culture first hand. An amazing story of culture clash, forbidden love and the hope of them having a future together. A must read, do it before or after the series. I wish the series was not done. A great HEA with such great characters.
Thank you!
Elin Peer has written one of the best books ever! It will bring you tears of joy and sorrow, shatter your heart and rebuild it, make you laugh, sigh, hope and wish you were part of the future.
So well written and thought out, a brillant story! It’s so hard to say goodbye to this fantastic series.
Started. I Loved it as much as all the others. I was crying in the first chapter lol. Still wondering should it be first or last in the story. Leaning towards just the way it is. Thanks for a great book
Ohh I enjoyed this so much. It was so sweet and romantic. I was in the edge of my seat wondering how this was going to play out. I stayed up pass my bedtime to finish it. Devina is a great heroine. Love Tyton and his family. I cringe remembering what happens in the future with the previous emperors before Khans father. I highly recommend.
This is the prequel to the Men of the North series. I’ve been waiting impatiently for Forbidden Letters ever since it was mentioned in the last book.
Elin Peer does not disappoint.
We get Devina Baker, a mothlander who finds a message in a bottle. She begins catapulting messages back across the border to Wilma in the North and her brother Tyton, very much a NMen.
Highly recommended. All the feels. The complicated relationships between men and women. And as always the fight for equality.
“Forbidden Letters” is the prequel to the “Men of the North” series and I couldn’t get enough of this fantastic series! “Hidden Letters” has a well written storyline, a plot that flowed effortlessly from page to page and characters that were so strongly written that I was totally in awe as I turned each and every page until the very end!
No spoilers of any kind included!
So all I’m going to say about Forbidden Letters is I thought it was awesome and I’m going to leave it at that!
This prequel to the Men of the North was amazing but I’m sad that this is the end to this series because truth be told I don’t want it to end!
Anyway Elin Peer is an fantastic story weaver, heck she’s kept me addicted to her work since I came across her books several years ago.
Basically she’s permanently stuck in the number one slot of my favorite authors list.
So it’s most definitely going to be a yes I do recommend this book to anyone who is searching for a fantastic story to climb into and get completely lost within its pages!
