I discovered this series through a recommendation from a friend earlier this year, and it’s quickly become one of my favorites. I highly recommend all the books about The Men of the North!
First of all I have to say this author makes it darn hard to not fall in love with anything she has published but this series goes beyond that. I personally am not a big fan of dystopian type of reads but when I read The Protector I didn’t immediately associate it with any genre. The Nmen are brutal and wild and fierce and confrontational and foul mouthed. They have tournaments to show themselves worthy to have a wife. They fight for control and leadership, the women while honored and protected are not leaders or educated. The women of the Mother Land are ruled by women and are all peace and harmony, love not war almost like the hippies of days gone by. There’s no violence and people are sent to centers to restore balance. The men are prettied up with bows and ribbons and makeup no scars, no cursing and definitely no muscles. Their worlds are separated and that’s fine because the way they rule their separate sides of the wall are just that separate. Until they aren’t.
I have read each book in the series and while they are all standalones they each have a common theme which is them moving to reunite their people. Now as you progress thru the series you find more differences between the two sides in how they deal with things. The emotional aspects are funny and sometimes just sad, but you also see similarities. There is never a dull moment and yes book hangovers are in your future.
Like this authors other books you will find yourself in deep thought over some of the little things that make it draw you in and fight for the characters and world. You will fall in love with the characters and their struggles and beliefs. You may even choose a side. Regardless you will fall in love with each of them and want to slap them upside the head, hug them and make it all better, choke some sense into them, wash their mouth out with soap, confine them to their room (yup like a bad boy or girl, oh wait that did happen). You will love this author, shake your head and wonder how in the hell, cry, laugh, and then wait for the next book to find out what happens next. Me personally?? I’m heading over to find me a Nmen, who wants a pansy ass momsies boy when you can have a Nmen?
I absolutely love this author who writing always has a deeper layer, always emotional, always thought provoking, always entertaining, always more. I haven’t read anything from her that I wouldn’t happily recommend to any reader.
I have reviewed each of these books separately, they are fantastic. I love how Elin Peer creates this new world, brings the readers into the world and allows us forget the real world. To have the first five books in a box set, that is amazing. Buy the set, you won’t regret it.
I’ve read and reviewed each of the 5 books individually and am combining all of my reviews here in one place. This is a great chance to get 5 amazing books for one low price! I highly recommend doing so.
The Protector:
Elin Peer has done it again. She has created a world with characters that somehow manage to weave their way into your heart and mind. Some I just love and some I love to hate. And I find that I’m always a little bit sad when finishing a book that she has written because I feel like I’m leaving behind friends. Any author who has the ability to do that even once I consider to be talented. I can honestly say I have felt that way after every book I have read of hers and I’ve read them all!
This new series starts us off with Boulder and Christina. I’m just smiling as I recall their adventure in my mind. They are so very different, but complement each other perfectly. I started reading it and couldn’t put it down. I totally ignored everything I should have been doing and did what I wanted to be doing, which was find out what was happening in Boulder and Christina’s world. I really can’t wait for Kahn and Pearl’s story and just know it will be my favorite with those two minds going at each other (much like Green in the Clashing Colors series). This is a great introduction to the new series and I have to say that I loved it! It has its own HEA as all of her books do. There is also no cliffhanger although you are introduced to other characters that will follow with their own story so it’s best to read them in order. Also, her stories are all complete stories…you never feel cheated with just all of a sudden everything wrapping up and you end up just scratching your head thinking, “what just happened?” You definitely get your money’s worth! If you have read any of her books you know what I’m talking about. If not, do because you won’t regret it.
The Ruler:
I anxiously awaited the release of this book because I love everything Elin Peer has written and knew this would be no different. And it wasn’t. Fabulous book with a great story. I loved the two main characters and how crazy they are able to drive each other. The dialogue, the situations (even though it’s hundreds of years in the future), all of it…believable and quite easy to imagine. I found myself transported to this great place and that I didn’t want to come back! I especially love how the heroine is strong and oh so very brave, yet maintains her femininity. I’m always a sucker for a strong female character! And Pearl is a great one. I’m reminded of a quote from the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding that goes something like this: “The man may be the head, but the woman is the neck and can turn the head any direction she wants.” That pretty much sums up Pearl. It took Khan a little while, but he learned not to underestimate her. Chess anyone???
And now the wait for The Mentor…
The Mentor:
The Mentor captured me right from the first word and didn’t let go! I knew that would be the case when I started it though because that’s how it’s been with each and every book I’ve read from Elin Peer. She has true talent and that is shown through characters, the settings she creates and definitely in the stories she writes. This book is no exception. I felt the angst right along with the characters…my heart broke with some of the tragic events children had survived…and belly laughed at some of the pranks (especially the one involving the teachers).
This book is a stand alone, but the third in a series. It can be read without reading the previous two, but it would be much better to read them first. Trust me. You won’t be sorry.
The Seducer:
Wow, it just keeps getting better and better. Elin Peer has a way of creating characters who are well developed and complex – just like real life. These stories take on a life of their own and I find myself so vested that I can’t put the book down. Ever since the first book I read by Ms. Peer (The Accidental Slave), I’ve been hooked. She manages to create worlds/settings that are rich and I have no problem imagining in my head. She has a lot of talent and I have not been disappointed in reading any of her books. The Seducer definitely fits into that category. I find I have a favorite new couple with each new Men of the North Books. I anxiously await the next one!
The Warrior:
Elin Peer has this incredible gift of creating characters, situations even whole worlds that allow you to totally escape your own world for a time. I haven’t found many authors who have been able to accomplish that and consider myself lucky to have stumbled across her and her books. This story is no different. I awaited anxiously for this book – book 5 in the series. Magni, the hero of this story, always fascinated me with the glimpses we saw of him in previous books. I have not been disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Magni and Laura (the heroine) and will love to see more glimpses of them in the rest of the series. I had a hard time finishing this book, only because I didn’t want Magni’s and Laura’s story to end. But all good things must eventually come to an end. So now I wait patiently (or maybe not to patiently) for the next book in the series to arrive.
Book 1 This is a wonderful story about how to cope with life’s change now we are 400 years into the future and women control America they setup a counsel that decides what happens on there side of the border. Christina Sanders is an teacher and a Archaeologist who was determined to get across the border to see the Northland which was primitive where men still killed animals and fought, were rude and treated women with no regard for what they might want. But she had heard that there was the opportunity for her to work on a new find. She had heard about the women ratio of 15 to one for every man, she was after a man but you never know. But there was not much information but one woman had some pictures that she had shown and they were able to see and talk to them, but didn’t know a lot about them but had found them fascinating and mysterious. The Nmen are in need of a man to excavate a building site which happen to be Berkley College unfortunately happens to be inside of the Northland and Christina is requesting to go are rather dying to go and when she is given approval she was certainly not prepared for what she saw and heard. When she was dropped off at the border she was waiting for her ride to the city and when he came flying down she was scared to death because of the way he was flying the drone he stepped out and she did try to be nice where she was from in San Francisco all men and women didn’t believe in being rude or not speaking in a kindly tone to anyone, but her ride was a 6 foot 8 inch muscled bound bearded swearing giant and she was scared to death but she looked him straight in the eye. Then she met the Ruler Khah Aurelius of all of the Northland and he was very unhappy because she was a woman he told her that she had to have someone to protect her or she would have to leave. Christina touched them all in a way they never expected. This was a funny, romantic, sad and a look at what could happen in our future. I purchased a copy and provided a review with no obligation.
Book 2 While Khan was trying to keep his brother from going crazy over his wife for leaving him because she wanted to learn karate now she was gone and his brother had gone on the other side in hopes that he could find her and bring her home but since he couldn’t he kidnapped a noble woman and Khan has been holding her at the palace until the women of the M world return his brother’s wife. His brother is a laughing stock and his brother is getting drunk and fighting daily. Khan is not surprised that the women on the other side have come up with an idea to exchange her for Councilwoman Pearl who thinks that she is outsmarting Khan but he is quite the slick character and he and Pearl team up and start a school with both boys and girls to see how it will work for the future of both sides. Something big happens for Pearl and Khan and they find that they have more in common than they thought, they make a decision and bring it before the board about the school as well as a personal issue, but the board is not happy with the out come and things change drastically for Pearl and Khan. Great story line, just about everything about this book and the series is pretty fascinating considering we are years into the future. I was given a copy as a gift from the author, I am providing a review without obligation.
Book 3 Another outstanding story with in depth characters that keep you reading to the end. In this book Archer and Kya the new teachers for the test school seem to have different ideas about how the children need to be taught and disciplined but while they are fighting at every turn things are happening to and around them at every turn. Very enjoyable and a first for the Nmen and the Motlanders and oh what a teaching moment for everyone in this new book. Elin did an excellent job on this book as she has on the ones before. I received a copy as a gift from the author. I am providing a review without any obligation.
Book 4 Finn is the physician among the Nmen and to his Ruler Khan, he has convinced his Ruler and his wife Pearl to allow him to come as a representative to the Motherland because he thinks that while he was protecting Athena after Magni kidnapped her and brought her across the border. That she put a curse on him when she thought that he was going to rape her even though he told her he would not, they got off to a bad start even if it was only 5days but she had been terrified, but not so much by the time she came back home after Pearl agreed to take her place. She and Finn did learn a little about each other even though Finn has some serious emotional issues he has come to apologize and ask her to forgive him and remove the curse. Athena cannot figure what Finn is really up to so she makes a deal with him and he agrees. This is their very interesting story, a lot can happen in 5days and it does for Finn and Athena as well as for some others. Enjoyed the story. I was given a copy as a gift by author. I am providing an honest review without obligation.
Book 5 This is absolutely one of the best stories of the series, they just seem to keep getting better. Magni is at his wits in wanting his wife back it has been 6 months now some of the Nmen have been sent over to the Motherland for the past week and his best friend Finn was part of the group that went over and he was staying with the Priestess that Magni had kidnapped and was put under Finn’s protection. Finn promised that he would try to find Laura and try to convince her to come home. Finn fell in love with Athena while he was visiting and brought her back with him because she got hurt during the earthquake .Magni was happy to see Laura but didn’t know how to express himself except by demanding that she listen to him. Laura talked with Athena and realized a lot about herself as well as her husband growing up in the Northland she saw how different her life was to the way she had been living in the Motherland and she liked the freedom she had but she loved her husband but he always wanted her to do as he told her without question and she was determine to prove herself to him but she didn’t realize that she didn’t know how her husband thought because they didn’t talk and realizing that she made even more mistakes that caused them both distress. Now it seems like they may never get back to gather because Magni finds out she is not one of them anymore in his mind she has betrayed him so he leaves for Alaska and all hell seems to break loose. I received a copy of this book as a gift from the author. I am providing an honest review without obligation
I’ve read all the Men of the North books individually and I loved and enjoyed every single book. Elin Peer is a very talented story weaver which is why I try to get all her books if I’m able to because I enjoy the characters and realities that she creates.
I highly recommend this box set to anyone who’s interested in crawling into these stories and getting totally lost within their pages. Because every single book is amazing!
This has to be The BEST futuristic book I’ve ever read. Elin Peer has the inate ability to weave a tale that will have you automatically following along spellbound! There are few authors who can place you within a storyline, make you feel as if you are personally involved with the characters they have created and then once it’s finished, your mind has automatically started to compare what you’ve read against the reality you live and wonder. Wonder what if. Could it be? How will it end? So much talent will leave you in awe as you read The Men of the North Series without a moment of disappointment. A definite 5 star recommendation
Be transported into a world at once familiar and wonderfully strange…
Come into a future where two diametrically opposed societies
must come together– or perish.
Ah, the battle of the sexes…
Elin Peer has created a dystopian world where the divide between social mores and sexual roles is pretty much literal.
Will the “Momsies” and the “N-Men” find compromise? How about Love? Can they build a combined culture for lasting peace?
Each of these books explores the many aspects of the societal mores that we live in– through a futuristic, gadget-filled, lens. And each romance is all at once funny, frustrating, steamy and satisfying.
Bottom line: Go ahead! Binge a little! 5 stars.
