The narrator again does a fantastic job with bringing this world along with the pain, desperation, fear and determination to life.
As with book one in this series I got totally lost within the story, Melkor and Purity’s connection is one that no one or no thing can break.
A fantastic urban fantasy book that I didn’t want to end.
Picking up where the first book left off, we get a taste of the training the hunter, Alma, is giving to Purity. Both are working long and hard, but Purity is struggling somewhat with using the portals until suddenly it just clicks for her. She and Melkor are teamed up and introduced to Redemption, an Unseelie warrior, and their first order of business is to help find the mother of one of Purity’s fellow students from her high school.
Jesse is one of the high school bullies from book one, and he begs Purity and Melkor for help in rescuing his mother, who had been taken by one of the Soulless, an action that none of the hunters had ever heard of them doing before; they grab and kill only. In tracing the mother’s movements on the day of her disappearance, Purity and Melkor discover she is peripherally involved in the theft of the keys of Hell.
This story just keeps getting better and better. Purity, on her own, is beginning to show some depths to her character that just weren’t visible when with her family. She and Melkor are both growing into a more mature relationship with each other as well, and this developing storyline provides much of the entertainment, the smiles and laughs I had while reading. I enjoyed how each experienced some nervous anxiety over their close proximity to each other, the worry over there only being one bed in the apartment, Melkor’s fumbling with how to approach Purity during their brief hiatus before going out to find Jesse’s mother and the keys. And yet, they still had some less than adult moments as in the car race with Jesse back to the apartment. The voice of the unknown Unseelie in Purity’s mind and the appearance of Unblessed were unsettling and an excellent addition to the story.
I listened to the Audible audio edition of this book read by Heather Murdoch for HotGhost Productions so much that I will be looking for more books she has narrated. She has a great voice and a range and talent to distinguish a wide range of characters, both male and female.
I highly recommend this series as a whole. Book 2 does not stand alone. I think young adult readers and readers that like paranormal romance with younger protagonists would enjoy these the most.
I look forward to the upcoming publication of Book 3.
I asked to review this audiobook because I am such an an avid reader but also almost exclusively audio due to my schedule. Because of this, and the fact that a bad narrator can destroy a great series, I can be very critical of narrators. HotGhost Productions does a good job in narrating all voices this book. It was a very enjoyable listen and I didn’t have any issues distinguishing between characters. I do wish that I could see the specific narrators on the book since I often look for other audio books based on narrators that I enjoy.
As to the story, I don’t give away a spoilers because I feel you should read the story for that. However, I will say that it is book 1 in demon/vampire/hunter series that was different from what I normally see. It had great character development and overlying story line that several twists I didn’t see coming. You won’t be disappointed if you give it a try!
I received a free review copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This story has one of the most unexpected start I would have thought for a PNR. It is a most memorable start. It really set the pace for this story. I started to read/listen to this book since both characters were in another book that’s connected to this world. I was intrigued with their characters so when I found they had their own series, thought I’d look into it. Wasn’t aware it would be a new adult romance. Usually I don’t read much new adult romance, not that I don’t enjoy the few that I do. I just tend to find the characters too naive since they lack life experience. So of course some of that does affect this story and how it flows. I do find myself upset at the heroine at times but then I have to remind myself that she is young and lacks the experience to consider things through. I do like her attitude though and even though her weight (big girl here) was a hindrance in her mind, she still works hard to try and prove her worth in her journey to become what she wants to be. Overall, a good read and start to the series.
I am voluntarily leaving an honest review. All thoughts and opinion are my own.
I also listened to the audio book, so have comments about that in this review.
This story is really a prequel to the series and part one of the relationship between human Purity and hellhound Melkor. This is a YA urban fantasy book about how the team of Purity and Melkor came to be Hunters. It all starts off when Satan receives a Dear Satan letter from a very young Purity asking for one of his puppies. Satan comes to visit her, sees her potential, and assigns a young Melkor as her guardian. When they are older, and Melkor goes missing, she starts to fulfill her destiny so she can find him.
Purity as a child is very cute, and the narrator does an excellent job of depicting her. As the story progresses, it gets a little slow because there isn’t really any conflict, unless you count her relationship with her family. Near the end, the book picks up, and that conflict is the set-up for the series. The book switches points of view and the narrator does a decent job of indicating the different characters, but mostly, her male characters all sound the same. There are some interesting points in her world, such as her depiction of hell hounds and how they travel between our world and theirs. I’ve read other books by Kim Faulks (Zodiac Dragons) so wasn’t quite expecting this YA book, but I’m looking forward to the next in the series. I think this is a solid book and a good narration.
I got this book through KU after seeing an ad for it on Facebook. The premise intrigued me and I wanted to see if it was any good. I was pleasantly surprised that the story held my interest and actually left me wanting more! Melkor and Purity are very sweet and flawed characters but they work together. I’ll be checking to see if there’s a second book in their story.
I need to write this before I forget. I have no clue how Ms. Faulks does it but she exudes so many things within the words she writes that just tug at your heart strings with both joy and light and sorrow and sadness. She makes you feel like you are both Melkor and Purity when she writes their points of view.
This is just the beginning of the journey for them, only time will tell where it leads them and I for one hope I’m there for the ride because from where I am witnessing the ride it’s going to be explosive.
I’ve completed this and let me tell you I was blown away. This series is gonna be explosive as this couple becomes adhesive in their relationship. They have become hunters and their mission is two fold find the keys stolen from Hell Lucifer’s domain, Then of course there is Deimos the hound who killed Melkor’s Father.
Stay tuned because this one will be a bumpy ride as Melkor and Purity find romance along the way. I for one will be clinging to that gondola as it follows the unknown. Are you up for the ride?

Purity has always known she’s different, the Lord of Hell knew her destiny when his first laid eyes on her as a young child after she wrote to Him, asking for a puppy for Christmas! he gave her Melkor a Hell hound.
A fantastic story spanning both the underworld and the mortal realm.
I love when you get so lost in a story that all you can see is the world within the pages and forget where you physically are, this story does just that.
The Narrator does a brilliant job at bringing this world and the characters to life.
One year, Purity Jane Anderson sent her Christmas wish letter to Satan. She wanted a puppy. Lucifer gave her a hellhound.
I found this, the first book in the “Melkor & Purity” series, to be very entertaining, smart, and creative. Although presenting a vision of Hell similar to that described by Dante, we meet a Lucifer he certainly never envisioned – he almost seems like a pretty decent guy. In fact, the story really begins when he tries to fulfill Purity Jane Anderson’s Christmas wish for a puppy but, as he sees something intriguing in the young girl, he hooks her up with a hellhound of approximately the same age level.
Purity and Melkor grow up together as friends with frequent play dates and I thought the characterizations of the two leads when children very amusing. Purity is a lively, mischievous child, a real handful for her very traditional parents, and Eric is the bratty little brother we all grew up with.
I liked how the author developed their characters as they aged. They expressed the same kind of moodiness, angst, and withdrawal from their families to become independent units pretty much the same as most teens display. Bullied at school for being overweight, Purity has lost some of her earlier sass and is burdened with low self-esteem. And when high school graduation arrives and their friendship has grown to more, both struggle with communicating their desire to leap friendship to love.
But there is more to their story, Purity is fated to become a hunter and Melkor is a hellhound and both are meant to protect, to stand between the horrors of Hell and this world. I look forward to reading more about Purity’s training to take up her destiny and Melkor taking his place in Lucifer’s hierarchy in the next books.
I recommend this book to readers that enjoy paranormal, coming-of-age stories.
I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.
From the time Purity was 5 she caught Lucifer’s attention. She wrote to him, not Santa, asking for a puppy. A hellhound. Melkor is a hound shifter, her age and became her friend for life. I thought it was ironic that her mom didn’t mind the friendship as much as her younger brother. When things go bad in Hell she’s determined to help Melkor fight the Soulless from invading Earth. This is an exciting read and one that I really liked.
