‘Medellin: Acapulco Cold’ is the third book in Bill Fortin’s gripping series about CIA agent Rick Fontain. This installment in the series follows Rick as he tries to track down a stolen nuclear warhead through the United States, Mexico, Russia, Malaysia and other countries all over the world. This case ends up being one of the most complex and life-threatening of Rick’s career. Fortin’s writing seems to get better and better with every new novel that he releases. This book was no exception in that regard.
In ‘Medellin,’ Fortin’s writing is descriptive, compelling, snappy and witty. I found myself alternatively biting my nails and laughing out loud at Fontain’s quick one-liners many times while I was reading this novel. There were no parts of this book that dragged or bored me. It kept up a tense, action-packed plot throughout its entirety and kept me guessing about what was going to happen next till the very last page. These stories remind me a bit of a mixture of the James Bond films and ‘Die Hard’ with some Alex Cross thrown in for good measure. I love the descriptions of CIA operations and technology. All of those details seemed genuine and added to the story quite a bit. I didn’t feel lost or like I couldn’t understand what was happening at all.
I don’t want to give too much away and spoil the entire plot because it was too awesome a read for that. This was just the kind of thriller I love, the kind that has equal doses of tension and comedy as well as an international setting. I’m hoping that Rick Fontain has more work to do in the future and that there will be more books coming out in this series.

Bill Fortin has done it again. He has written a seat of your pants original thriller starring Bill’s altered ego Rick Fontain. This time Rick is on a mission to stop Soviet nukes from falling into the Medellin Drug Cartel hands. It’s a great read and I highly recommend it especially if your a Clancy or Griffin fan.

The cold war is over and Soviet Union is the loser. Gorbachev under pressure from President Reagan has agreed to end the cold war era and the Soviet Union has collapsed. One of the agreements between Gorbachev and the American President is disassembling of a certain number of the warheads owned by the Soviet Union. A clique of greedy rogue KGB officer operation outside the agency led by Victor Cheuchkov sees this as an opportunity to enrich themselves. Taking advantage of the confusion they steal a few warheads from inventory marked for disassembling to sell in the black market using Iran as the middleman. Cheuchkov has a perfect customer none other than the devil himself Pablo Escobar a Mexican drug lord and head of the world most feared Medellin Cartel.
Pablo Escobar and his Medellin Cartel control the lucrative worldwide distribution of cocaine and are flush with money. Medellin Cartel is simply too powerful and like all power drugged people Pablo is feeling smug. In its hitlist is anyone its way including governments, Mexico government on top of the list and U.S.A government coming closely in second place. In their quest to show President Madrid of Mexico who is the boss they buy a warhead from the rogue KJB officers to tip the balance and force Mexico government to release their men and confiscated drugs. Medellin Cartel makes a mistake of killing a family related to one of their distributors ST Lee. Seeking revenge, Lee ensures the news of the cartel`s latest deal reaches the wrong ears in case of Cheuchkov and Pablo and the right ears in case of justice. This is when things start going wrong for the Medellin cartel. The ears are of none other than Rick Fontain.
Pablo believing he is untouchable doesn’t know by buying the warhead Medellin cartel has gone too far. They have made a deadly mistake of messing with an enemy out of their league – Rick Fontain and by extension the United States of America. Unlike the intimidated Mexico government under President Madrid, President Reagan is not afraid to accommodate him. He unleashes his best man Rick Fontain on a new assignment – Pablo and Medellin cartel. What Pablo and Medellin Cartel doesn`t know is he is about to collide with unrelenting and unforgiving natural phenomena. Rick Fontain is not a normal spy. Rick is a thorough and resourceful extraordinaire CIA field agent with unlikely friends at all levels and he is wired not to stand aside while crime is perpetrated. He is a flawless specialist in breaking bad guys like Pablo and company.
With blessings of his president and top DOD chiefs, Rick Fontain leads a team of tough spies, an unlikely business associates, military intelligence, war-hardened special OPS teams and hurting Mexico SWAT team under a no-nonsense Major Sotomayor who is operating dark after betrayal by his bosses in Madeline payroll resulting in death in an ambush. Operation Acapulco Cold is underway to recover the missing missiles, recover the missing warhead and neutralize the nuclear threat and bring Pablo and his Medellin cartel to justice. Rick`s is well experienced in the game of cat and mouse game. However, his team has hands full of moles within its ranks, intimidated Mexico government, Mexican government officers under Medellin payroll, KGB rogue officers and assassins protecting their investment and the well-armed Medellin cartel under Pablo and his ruthless lieutenants – and the clock is ticking.
…
This is an almost perfect Action Thriller novel. The book shows the usual well-researched and meticulous work of Bill Fortin. By combining his deep imagination addition of a twist in relatable historic events and characters the author has created a book full of suspense that will keep the reader flipping pages.

Bill Fortin has another winner! As a former member of President Reagan’s support staff in the late 70’s and early 80’s I always enjoy Bill’s books. If you haven’t read the first 2 in this series, buy them now before reading this one. Rick Fontain is America’s James Bond in my opinion and writing about an actual time in history with some true historical references is the way I like it.

Bill Fortin – Military Rick Fontain Series Bk 3 – Medellin Acapulco Cold – Reviewed 8/29/19 – Read 8/28/19
When the Cold War becomes hot, here’s another look!!
March of 1987, with Ronald Regan as our President the Gorbachev treaty from 1986 stepping down and removing nuclear bombs some disappear. Rick Fontain is tasked in finding and getting the situation under control. The Russians and the Medellin cartel are working against Rick and the bombs are scheduled to be armed and the cartel is ready to wipe out their enemies.
What did I like? An exciting and interesting storyline outlining a fiasco that happened when the Russians wanted to put one over on our President and sell the bombs on the open market. The interesting take that the author took included an account adding a little humor to defuse a very serious situation.
@ddeegott What will you like? Stimulating, thought-provoking, exciting and fascinating with very remarkable characters. Well written with lots of research showing on every page. The characters are awesome and interesting with some being very unique. I liked the audiobook with the feeling that I was sitting right there and involved with every action that took place. The situation was very serious but loved the way the author handled the situations and using the language that would normally be used. Adding the personal take and humor made the book even more interesting to listen too! I received this from the publisher in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion. All opinions expressed are my own and not edited by anyone but me.

Bill Fortin has surpassed his previous two novels; Red Eye Fulda Cold and Stinger, Operation Cyclone. In Medellin Acapulco Cold, he continues the development of the main character, Rick Fontain’s persona. What fascinates are the subtle ways in which Fortin brings his characters to life. You can feel—sense the respect and comradery between Fontain and Bill Douglas, and those of the inner circle. The plot is immediately set into motion. The reader knows almost immediately that a drug-smuggling Mexican Cartel and the Russians are involved in the disappearance of Atomic warheads. The action is fast-paced. The growth as a writer shows itself very nicely in Medellin Acapulco Cold. A layperson may have some trouble with all the military acronyms but in typical Fortin style, he provides their meanings and as in his previous books there is a list of characters and names at the end of the book to help the reader.
