Captain T.K. Reaper only cares about his men; until he ends up falling for the one woman who can rescue his team. Reaper has lived his entire life without love. Living on the edge with no fear, Reaper and his team volunteered for Project Mayhem— a top-secret experiment that uses a serum to enhance physical abilities in order to fight terrorism. Reaper believed the experiment would help save … save lives, but the serum only ends up taking them. Forced to go on the run, Reaper escapes the lab with his men, only to realize that they need the serum to survive. He has only one choice; return to the lab, and steal the source of the serum.
Caroline Cotter used to be a spoiled Senator’s daughter; now, she’s a victim. Kidnapped and held against her will to make the serum used for Project Mayhem, Caroline gives up hope of ever being free again… until Reaper enters, and frees her from her dark prison.
Yet the jungle outside is full of terrors, and government officials are hot on their tail. Reaper plans to keep the relationship between him and Caroline platonic, but undeniable attraction and explosive desire, coupled with Caroline’s adoration that he saved her from certain death, make it hard to resist the love story blossoming between them.
What will Reaper choose? His romance with Caroline, or the sacred vow he’s made to the brothers willing to die by his side?
Thrills and action are on every turn of the page in the first book of the Operation Mayhem Series. Packed with adventure, heat, and a slight paranormal twist, Mayhem’s Warrior is a dark romantic suspense novel readers will delightfully devour.

3.75 stars–MAYHEM’S WARRIOR is the second instalment in Lindsay Cross’ contemporary, adult OPERATION MAYHEM romantic, military, suspense, sci-fi series. This is Captain T. K. Reaper, and Caroline Cotter’s story line. MAYHEM’S WARRIOR can be read as a stand alone but I recommend reading Mercy and Mayhem for some back story. OPERATION MAYHEM is a spin-off from the author’s Men of Mercy series where Reaper and his teammate’s story begins.
SOME BACKGROUND: A secret military experiment known as Project Mayhem, headed by Jack Mankel, General Rainier and Dr. Winters, hoping to create a super soldier has left several victims in its’ wake. US military Captain T. K. Reaper’s team of elite soldiers ‘volunteered’ unaware of what it was they had volunteered for or why. Hoping to avenge the death of a fellow soldier, Reaper frees his teammates (Mercy and Mayhem .5) only to discover the tests are continuing using a young woman as the source of the drug.
Told from dual third person perspectives (Reaper and Caroline) MAYHEM’S WARRIOR follows in the wake of the rescue of Reaper’s team from a secret lab in the Congo jungle, a rescue meant to save Caroline Cutter. When his latest assignment spiralled out of control, Reaper set out on his own to rescue a woman believed to be used and imprisoned in the same lab where Reaper and his teammates were once held and abused. Caroline Cotter’s life was no longer her own. Drained of her blood on a regular basis our heroine is kept comatose to keep her alive. A rescue operation finds our heroine on the run with a man whose DNA calls to her own, a man whose own life hangs in the balance along with the men he left behind. What ensues is the cross –country journey of Reaper and Caroline, and the fall-out as Reaper suspects Caroline is part of the plan.
The relationship between Reaper and Caroline is one of immediate attraction but an attraction based upon circumstance and need. Alone together, as they search for a way out, our couple will find themselves the targets of insurgents caught up in a military experiment, as well as the guerrillas caught up in a local civil war. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
MAYHEM’S WARRIOR is a story of betrayal and vengeance; secrets and lies; destruction, compassion, hope and love. Because of the ‘scientific and experimental’ nature of the series premise, I would suggest suspending reality for some of the situations and plot points- this is a fictional story with some sci-fi elements bordering on the paranormal. The premise is familiar but intriguing, fast paced and suspenseful; the romance is seductive and hot but issues of trust turn Reaper into a man not worthy of Caroline’s love; the characters are strong and dynamic.
I would like to add that I suspect I am missing some important background information in the lead up to the current series. As Operation Mayhem is a spin –off from the author’s MEN OF MERCY series, I am going to presume that much of the history is revealed in the original series.
I have a hard time rating this book.
As far as I know this was the first book in Operation Mayhem series so I would have liked a lot more informative, polished plot line whit a lot less inconsistencies. As a series starter it should have contained way more background information. Those inaccuracies related to the timeline were that bothered me the most. It felt like the author too was uncertain of when Caroline was abducted in the first place. Was it one month ago or rather like six?
Beside the timeline mix-up there was the who-knows-what-information mix-up too. Sometimes a character said or thought something that they simply couldn’t have known because they weren’t physically there when it happened or were unconscious at the time or whatever else the reason.
The story, or rather the idea behind it was quite good, hence the reason of my struggle with rating. The characters weren’t perfect but were likeable. A lot happened, it was an action packed story.
I can’t help but be a bit disappointed though to have left with so little information about Caroline. This was hers and Reaper’s book but all I have is questions with only half-answers regarding her true role in this infamous project.
Unfortunately I think the author didn’t do justice to her.
Some grammatical errors and mix-up of characters’ names occured too, adding to my discontentment.
This was my first experience with Lindsay Cross’s writing and I’m going to give a try to the second book in this series to find out how much of the above loose ends will be tidied up satisfactorily.
Lindsay Cross does a very good job mixing a romance into a military ops story. This continues where Mercy and Mayhem ended. Lindsay Cross’s books all stand alone but are a part of an ongoing series and will refer back to characters from previous books. This book is the story of Captain Reaper and his search for justice, vengeance and survival for himself and his team. The key to this is finding Caroline Cotter, the senator’s daughter. She has been taken by General Rainier to be used for experiments on her blood and that blood has the ability to save not only Reaper but his team as well. I have given you the premise for the book but I will not give away the story but know this, there will be fighting, loss, love, betrayal and redemption but the story will continue because this is a saga and there is a team of soldiers that need a story of their own. I enjoyed it so much that I will continue in Ms. Cross’s journey into Mayhem!

Decided on
3.75 Stars rounded up to 4.
Could have been a great read but ended up being an okay read.
Way to repetitive and overly wordy. The redundant repetition is proof that the story has been obviously stretched out. I don’t know why the author did this.
There are various editing errors and the writing becomes a sloppy towards the end.
It started off great. Interesting and intriguing. Loaded with action and suspense.
But, it kept getting bogged down with unneeded words.
More later
The premise is great and I think about 75% of the book is well written. By the way, this is science fiction. There is a serum created that changes the dna of humans to make them stronger, etc. That is definitely Sci-Fi!.
Not only is Reaper and Caroline interesting characters, so are a couple of others in the story. The action is fast paced and ‘Everything’ happens quickly. Other then the prolog, the whole story takes place within just a few days. This includes the ‘Insta-Attraction’.
The romance is adult and there are a couple of nice steamy scenes.
My kindle notes are in my omnibus Operation Mayhem Box Set
I will definitely be reading book 2 in this series.

Operation Mayhem Box Set (Operation Mayhem, #1-3)
This is book one in the Operation Mayhem series and it features Capt. TK Reaper and Caroline Cotter. This is a fan-freaking-tastic (second) series opener! Reaper showed more emotion than I thought he was capable of. I guess love will do that to even the hardest of men. When he tied her up and walked away I was in shock! If I had a book in my hand I probably would’ve thrown it across the room. Such strong emotions come from being so deeply entrenched in such a mesmerizing story.
Brilliant characters and story line! I can’t wait for the next one.
I loved Caroline, I was glad when I learned she had her own story especially when it didn’t exactly resolve in Mercy and Mayhem but set up for its own series which begins with this book. I really felt for her and everything that she had been through yet she was willing to put the last little bit of trust in Reaper which I felt they were adorably cute together.
Reaper, I loved his character, he was willing to risk everything to try and get this serum which also included rescuing Caroline. I loved how their connection built over time. I also loved that when he did finally develop and listen to the feelings he had for her, he was willing to risk the life of his team to make sure she was safe. Also that she was never used a test subject again.
I loved the action in this book, I also loved the connection that these two characters had. I fell in love with their relationship.
Like the other books Lindsay Cross writes there is an overall arc for the books and I loved it, I cannot wait to read the rest of the books and found out about the serum and whether they can survive or not. The book has an amazing plot. I loved it.
This story was extremely intense and it worked really well. I fell in love with the story and characters and I really can’t wait to see what happens with this series. Lindsay Cross is amazing and I have no idea what I’m going to do when I run out of books of hers because I am addicted.
A new series which branched off from the original Mercy books and what a great read!
Still the same action, adventure and romance but our heroes this time around have been experimented on and their DNA “tweaked”, giving them all a few little added extra gifts.
Reaper may have signed his team up to the experiments but they were not what they were expecting. His men are dying from these experiments and when they finally break free they now need a new source of serum to prevent them from reaching meltdown.
Whilst on the hunt for Grenier and the serum, Reaper finds Caroline and rescues her from the pits of experimentation. She has been slowly bled for her blood to be used in synthesising the serum. On their break out attempt Reaper gets injured and for the first time ever someone is taking care of him for a change!
Caroline may be a bit of a princess and her previous entitled existence is now a distant memory. Led to safety by Reaper, she quickly realises there is more to the giant warrior and falls under his spell. As they evade Grenier the passion ignites between them and there are some very hot scenes!
Mayhem’s Warrior by Lindsay Cross
Operation Mayhem #1
I always enjoy reading Ms. Cross’s books even when they stretch plausibility and this one had me wondering just how some of the things could really happen BUT I would then think, “This is fiction and in fact almost more science fiction-fantasy than just military romantic suspense. I enjoyed finding out more about Reaper and his team, how they became what they are and enjoyed finding out that Caroline is saved BUT there were some issues I had that made me wonder…
What I liked:
* Reaper’s strength and commitment to his team
* Caroline’s willingness to do what it took
* The team’s wish not to harm and their willingness to commit to something better even when deceived.
* Mira – the nurse that helped Reaper and Caroline – I hope they help her in the future
* Wanting to find out more about Reaper’s team in future books
* The action packed adventure the two were on
* Wanting to experience Caroline’s meet-up with her twin sister
What I didn’t like:
* Caroline’s naivety on some fronts
* The believability factor – especially related to the nursing skills Caroline deftly managed (that I took time to learn), the ability to do things I believe might be humanly impossible (okay he is enhanced but still) and a few other things.
Do I want to read more of the series? Yes
Do I recommend the book? Yes
Thank you to the author for the ARC – this is my honest review.
3-4 Stars
Absolutely loved Mayhem’s Warrior: Operation Mayhem. This was an exciting, action packed, and fast paced book, couldn’t put it down. Lindsay Cross has another 5 star book, this was a thrilling ride, she is masterful in her story telling she kept you turning page after page. Lindsay has a way of drawing you into her books like your in the story with these great characters.
We have Captain T.K Reaper who with his team volunteered for a secret project and when he found out they had been lied to they escaped but now Reaper is on a mission to save his team before it’s to late.
Caroline Cotter a senator’s daughter has been kidnapped but not for ransom but for a top secret project, the one and same as the soldier but why?
Soon Reaper and Caroline have this unmistakable chemistry between them. Can they fight the connection or do they want to? Will secrets come between them? Only time will tell. I highly recommend this book.
Caroline was set to marry General Rainer but leaves him at the alter. He kidnaps her and uses her blood to make a serum for soldiers, to make them super soldiers. Reaper is leader of his team and trust the wrong man. He and his team are given the serum and are turned into killing machines.
They escape but he returns to rescue Caroline because they need her blood to make more of the serum or his men will die.
As they are running from the Gen and his men, Reaper realizes he has not lost all his human feelings. He has feelings for Caroline but he has lied to her so many times, he doesn’t think she’ll ever forgive him when she finds out. Because he knows his life will be nothing but darkness without her in it.
Excellent story and characters. Lies. Betrayals. Sex. Suspense. Secrets. I couldn’t wait to turn the next page to see what happens next. Can’t wait to read the next one.
