Maybe Later by C. Burgoa is the first book in the Spearman Family Series. The audiobook is masterfully narrated by the incredible Sebastian York and the new to me voice of Grace Grant.
Jackson Spearman is the heade of a huge tech company. And because his pa is going away on leave, he gets a new substitute – and that would be Amy.
Amy is a fresh breeze, efficient, witty.
And they drive each other up the wall fresh from the start.
Maybe Later is the fabulous start to a new very promising series by this author. Well written, beautifully thought out, beautifully narrated, beautifully told. A highly enjoyable read/ listen. I recommend the book, 5 stars.
So what to say? If you read Wrong text, right love, you’ll recognize the same set up. If you haven’t read that book, but will, please don’t let it stop you. The story does develop in a different way. Where I laughed so very often about Wrong text right love, Maybe later is a much sweeter story with a tormented protagonist female unable to open up to this wonderful grumpy guy. Don’t we all love our male figure to be like fudge: to chew on his personality, wondering whether your teeth will hold or break, but then he just melts on your tongue, leaving you with the sweetest sensation in your mouth (or belly)? Jackson, a new favourite of mine! Looking forward to read how his brothers and sisters get hooked up by the way.
SPOILER WARNING
Jack(son)s problems were easier to relate to than the mixed up thoughts of Emmeline. Eh, Amy… there, you see? How to separate this keeps you sane/balanced, I’m not sure if that works for real. But hey, this is a story, and worth your (lockdown) time.
I voluntarily leave a review after receiving a free copy of this book.
RATING 4.5 STARS
Maybe Later is a stand alone romance by Claudia Burgoa. This is such a wonderful book. It’s one of those books that just makes you feel all warm on the inside. These two were so cute together. I will admit that they did frustrate me as well. I just wanted to give them both a little shake and make them see what was right in front of their faces!!
Jackson Spearman, CEO of EMC Technologies is a wealthy, demanding man, not much of a sense of humor. He lives for his work. He’s been badly hurt in the past and his way of dealing with it is to sink even deeper into his company, his work. Jackson’s assistant is going on maternity leave so in her place they’ve hired a virtual assistant. I will tell you that their first exchanges were not warm and fuzzy. These two definitely took awhile to warm to each other.
Amy Walker is a virtual assistant extraordinaire. She had been warned before taking on her new client that he was going to be difficult. But she was up for the challenge. Little by little she wore him down. They slowly warmed to each other and a friendship was born. Their “work” chats soon became more personal.
At the same time, both Amy and Jackson completely by chance meet someone else in real life. Just a chance meeting, an instant connection, a glimpse of something worth exploring. Both Jackson and Amy are carrying burdens from their pasts. Both struggle with letting go and allowing happiness in now. Amy especially struggles with this connection she is feeling towards this new man she has met and the virtual friend she has made in Jackson.
This was such a sweet, romantic story. I especially loved Jackson. Once he was in, he was all in. The epilogues were especially wonderful. As I said earlier, this is a stand alone. But I look forward to reading about Jackson’s brother, Jason, in, Then He Happened.
Maybe Later was my first book by this author, and I was so glad I gave it a chance. I love witty banter and was intrigued reading the overview as the heroine in this story, Amy Walker aka Emmeline, is a virtual assistant and for the first third of the book, she only communicates remotely with her boss Jackson/Jack Spearman. Their connection is undeniable even though they hadn’t met in person yet.
She is amazing and I love her charismatic personality, the suggestions and advice she gives him, how dedicated she is to her job, how she isn’t afraid to speak her mind or go the unconventional route like not ordering his favorite lunch, and her smart business sense.
You can tell from the writing back and forth that they need each other and long for a friendship. That’s what I love most about this book as they start off as boss and assistant, but she breaks all work barriers by trying to get to know him and become his friend. Once they accidently meet in person, it’s explosive. Their chemistry is undeniable and how they meet is so romantic and unique. He is the first one to put the clues together and I couldn’t put the book down waiting to learn how it would end.
I am in awe of how honest and open Emmeline is with her feelings of self-worth. Her parents really did a number on her, and I admire her so much. She is broken and a bit of a recluse for good reason, but Jackson only sees a woman who truly understands his soul. He sees every positive quality that she possesses. He loves her quirks and doesn’t stop until she realizes just how special she is to him. Both Jack and Emmeline are so deserving of love and I was so happy with the ending of this book and how they found each other. Their individual personalities were very evident and they complemented each other so beautifully.
This book is filled with so much passion and deep emotions while being funny and realistic as well. I felt the writing and character development is excellent; the storyline that gave me the warm fuzzies, just like watching some of my favorite Rom-Com movies like You’ve Got Mail and Never Been Kissed.
A Virtual Reality
You’ve Got Mail meets Sleepless in Seattle… a hot headed CEO hires a virtual assistant when his goes on maternity leave. The beginning chapters are mostly email & text message exchanges which allow Jackson & Amy to get to know one another, mostly.
“Amy” is using a pseudonym to protect her identity. When the main characters finally meet, sparks fly.
As with all virtual relationships, it’s easier to hide behind a keyboard than be present in life.
I wasn’t certain I would like this story, the reviews were very good. I loved it!!! Planning on reading more by this author.
I read about a book a day. Most are bully or dark romance. This book was a big surprise. It was well written and done in a different format. I loved Emm and Jackson. I could feel like I could see them on the page.
received in exchange for a honest review.
I have to be honest. I love Claudia Burgoa’s books. I love her imperfect characters and how she tackles serious topic and doesn’t have love be instant but a journey. Saying this I need to say I was wary of this book. Why if I love Ms. Burgoa’s books so much? It was a romcom. I never read a romcom from her. I don’t even believe she wrote one before this book. They have all been serious but amazing. So I was leery before I began.
I can say after reading I was smiling and just enjoyed this book. I loved the interaction between Amy and Jackson. Jackson was Mr. Crankypants personified. You can’t help but love the guy and watching him slowly become who he once was is great. Amy was bubbly and a great assistant. Their interactions got us to get to know Jackson more and see he was hiding behind his crankiness. Even though this is a romcom, it did have some serious moments. Those moments were handled in the wonderful Claudia burgoa way with sensitivity and grace. When we learn why Jackson is how he is you really feel for the guy. This isn’t doled out all at once either. We get hints and clues here and there and never really the total story. Just enough to know the guy was burned badly. So when he put himself out there you rooted for him. As he transformed due to Amy’s ways you smile. Seeing him confused about how he finds two people amazing and guilty because of this until he realizes the truth was heartwarming and wonderful. When you see why you laugh and just sit back and enjoy the ride.
Amy was lighthearted and sweet. She was great at her job and hard working. Her and Jackson awesome together. they help each other learn to heal and take chances. Little did they know where that would bring them and how nutty their situation would become. These two helped one another come out of their shells and learn where they want to be. The learn to trust again and let someone in.
What makes this story fun? The plot is so twisted and fun. You wonder who knows what and how it will pan out. You see that Amy has a view of what she wants that is based on fantasy and this I believe is because of her past. She wants something that can’t be achieved and this protects her from being hurt. Jackson wants to trust again but is scared to and becomes cranky. When these two come into each others lives it doesn’t start out in a nice sweet way. in fact he wants to fire her, but along the way they become each other’s friends and trust one another. They let each other in and explore who they are. They become more and their lives are enhanced because of it. It’s great to see. As they fall in love they are faced with confusion and their past. JAckson also faces a impossible fantasy and that is hard. They learn to heal and open up but also watching Jackson wait and be so loving patient and kind is awesome. These two have some awesome chemistry and entertaining chats. They are two peas in a pod that challenge the other and support each other as well. there is love and respect galore but their love started on the foundation of friendship and grew.
A really great entertaining fun romance that has you smile and laugh. Has you just sit back and watch the show unfold with amusement. Claudia Burgoa gave us a pleasant surprise with this wonderful fun romance.
A HILARIOUS & WICKED, ROMCOM NOVEL
“Maybe Later” by Claudia Burgoa is a hilarious, witty and wonderful read! I wasn’t expecting it at all but my first book by the author really amazes me and no doubt left a lasting impression.
AWalk90: Socialized?
JSpear84: Met a girl.
AWalk90: Girl or woman? Because there’s a huge difference between those. I could congratulate you or call the police. Speak correctly, Spearman.
The book starts off with a string of correspondences between the hero, Jackson Spearman, and his newly appointed virtual assistant, Amy Walker. Their back and forth is so funny I just laughed so hard while reading the book!
Initially I thought the story will continue in this fashion – bantering with one another on email and the chat app – but it moves in a different direction and alas, brought us back to some real-life action. Leaving their virtual identities behind, we find Jack and Emmeline giving it a shot at real romance.
“How fucked up is it to want two women at the same time? I like that I can talk with Emmeline, but Amy challenges me. She makes me want to be better.”
Jackson “Jack” is an infuriating CEO of a tech company, who initially hated Amy for her direct responses and persistent curiosity. He finds her an insufferable know-it-all and refuses to let her in on his personal life. But through his interactions with her, he gradually realizes she is one of the few people he could speak freely with. His physical attraction to Emmeline and emotional attraction to Amy is confusing him but all too soon he will learn the truth of the matter!
“Your website has your bio, and attached to it there’s a picture of a building. Most people add their image to the bio. Unless … you are a building?”
Emmeline or Amy’s character really had me laughing through the book! Her snarky remarks and responses to Jackson are truly hilarious and the spark between them is undeniable. While in real life she met a gorgeous and sweet guy who caters to all her needs, ultimately she felt a deeper connection with the virtual Jackson whom she hasn’t even met yet.
“I get it, someone hurt you badly and it’s hard to trust and be vulnerable. It is scary to open up to others but staying isolated isn’t the answer. I hope you learn to trust again.”
As both of them came with past baggages, they find themselves having to face the challenges and discover their true self before having the courage to open up to each other.
The author did a great job throwing her readers into the world she built for Jackson and Amy, not forgetting to add in plenty of humour, some angst and a much believable romance (steam is on the low side but well, the plot more than makes up for it).
“It’d be unfair to ask you to wait until I figure my life out,” she says looking around.”
While I love reading an over-the-top, impossible-in-real-life romance story, I honestly think that Amy/Emmeline’s character is very realistic and unbelievably possible in real life. I can’t say for all women but for me, connecting with a partner on an emotional level is way more important than physical attraction. The heroine ultimately made a decision that I could relate to and that makes her one of my favourite book heroines!
“I’m far from perfect, Em. I just tried to be the guy you needed when you were having a shitty day. That’s what you do for your loved ones.”
Jackson, on the other hand, is also an amazing hero because he is just the perfect partner one could ever ask for. He didn’t push for the heroine to accept him or to give him any answers. Instead, he encourages her to find herself and give her time. I think this makes him one of the best book boyfriend ever!!!
Our story built slowly, in two different worlds, with two different hearts, fusing into just one big love.
Claudia Burgoa is a wonderful writer and the sense of humour, wit and the plenty of inspiring quotes she added into the story makes it one of my best reads thus far! There is some angst towards the end of the book and also a minimum level of smut in the story, but other than that, I will most definitely be reading it again to relive the awesomeness of this beautiful love story.

Loved this book! Such a fun read that I couldn’t put it down. As soon as I finished I got Jason’s story in Then He Happened.
My second time reading! Yes, that means you know its amazing. Maybe Later is such a fun and unique office/romcom. Heaps of witty banter with just enough angst to make it relatable. The entire story flowed seamlessly and I couldn’t put it down. Grab snacks and tissues! Five stars!
This book had me laughing at some points, near tears at others, and just was a very enjoyable read. Jackson Spearman is afraid to trust because of his relationship in the past. When his PA goes on maternity leave, she arranges a virtual assistant to fill in. Amy Walker is constantly challenging Jackson, to get outside his comfort zone. He thinks she’s unprofessional and annoying. Eventually, she gets past Jackson’s defenses. Their relationship on chat is amazing. When they each meet their ideal partner, will their “virtual” relationship ruin it for them?
This is a beautiful story that will have you laughing throughout reading it. I loved Jackson and Emmeline’s characters. Jackson’s assistant hires him a virtual assistant while she’s on maternity leave. Amy Walker aka Em doesn’t take anything from Jackson. He doesn’t care for her attitude at all. Eventually, they become friends. Jack meets Em at a bookstore, but only introduces himself as Jack, no last name given. He falls for Em, but Em tells him she’s not ready. What is going to happen when their identities become known? I won’t leave any spoilers, but I will say you will enjoy this book. I can’t wait to read more books from this new to me author. Now, I need to go buy more of her books.
I’m not surprised I loved this, everything I’ve read by Claudia Burgoa has blown me away. This book was written with witty humor about two people with serious issues. Both Jackson and Amy/Em are so closed off to other people but can let it rip online. I loved their banter. Great book with so many feelings with characters that care so much. Five Stars.
Maybe Later is everything I love about a good romance! Claudia Y. Burgoa is an amazing author! I am fairly new to her and I love all of her stories! This one may be my new favorite though!! FIVE STARS!!
Lots of witty conversations and interesting characters…the story will keep you entertained from beginning to the end. If you are incurable romantic and introverted, this will definitely pique your interest, but even if you’re not, you’ll still enjoy this light hearted and cute romance. Who doesn’t like a happy ending that seems almost improbable yet something that feels like should happen?
You can be whoever you choose to be behind the mask of technology but what you can’t do is run away from life! Jackson Spearman has built an empire, and with his heart hiding behind a fortress he lives in solitude! His quiet world is shaken by the new, annoying, virtual assistant that he has to rely on till his really assistant returns! Funny banter and the power to break down some of his walls Jackson finds himself wanting to know the woman behind the screen but fate had other plans!!
Maybe Later is witty, sweet, heartfelt slow burn romance that readers will love. A quick and easy dual POV office romance, err, well… kinda since a huge part of it is based on a virtual relationship. Maybe Later takes a few unexpected twists and does not follow the cookie cutter structure of many romances making it a very fun read for me. I loved the develop of the H/h romance through their virtual relationship and loved the characters. I expected it to be predictable, but I was pleasantly surprised when I read it. I would recommend this one for sure if you are looking for something by Claudia Burgoa or untraditional and not set in stone trope-y.
From the moment I picked this book up I had a feeling that I was really going to enjoy it. The banter between the hero and heroine was smart and fun and had me chuckling. I loved the You’ve Got Mail vibe from the story as these two connected through their online conversations and when they met in real life it was obvious that they had so much chemistry. As their online and true personas came out, I truly loved watching them fall for one another and open themselves up to the possibility of love.
The characters are fun and the dialogue was witty. The slow burn between these two was delicious and worth the wait. This was a lighter read and I really enjoyed it.
Oh so sweet, this love story is worthy of Claudia. I did feel like I was watching a Tom Hanks / Meg Ryan movie. Jack is so complicated but Emmeline is not any less. The sweetness of the story is so cute, funny and beautiful. I sympathized with the parents scene, I think a lot of us have been there. Claudia always manages to give us a story from the heart that is so realistic. Thank you Claudia for sharing this gift.
Such a delightful read! This is a light story that will leave you smiling. The characters are great as well. I love Claudia’s work and Maybe Later was a wonderful rom com.
