When children are young their emotions come in peaks and valleys. Sometimes they’re super excited, sometimes they’re sad, and sometimes they lose control and express themselves by throwing a temper tantrum. These outbursts of emotions are common for parents and kids of all walks of life and can be leveraged by parents who want to teach impulse control, improved behavior, and better mindfulness. … mindfulness.
That’s why Matt’s swirly world was written to help parents understand the “why” behind a tantrum as well as what’s going on inside their child’s brain when they’re acting out, feeling scared, or reacting to stressful situations.
An adorable journey featuring a mother and her young son, this book is a great reminder about how all emotions are accepted and that proper behaviors can be learned by kids and taught by moms and dads. In fact, your love is the perfect space where emotions can be processed, expressed, and shared together.
In this book parents will learn how mindfulness helps kid’s create better coping skills, but also a variety of other useful tools, including:
- How love can be used to process emotions and support positive behaviors
- Why feelings of anger and frustration come and go and are non-threatening
- How a calm voice and demeanor can soothe a child and minimize meltdowns
- Providing children relief from stress, anxiety, or big feelings and emotions
- How children often mimic the behaviors of their mothers and fathers
- Moving forward and adapting to behavioral changes in the future
This is an opportunity to learn and grow as a parent while teaching your child valuable mindfulness and self-control skills they can use long into adulthood. And it should be the first book you read on tantrums, emotions, and how to inspire positive behaviors each and every day.
When you need help better understanding why your child feels or acts they way they do in times of crisis, or you just want to connect with them on a deeper level, learn more about temper tantrums and emotional control with Matt’s swirly world – Helping Parents Understand Tantrums to Create Mindful Kids.

Wow! I love this. A precious story for parents and little ones that may be struggling with understanding and controlling their big emotions. I really like the way concepts are broken down for children to grasp more easily. I can’t wait to use it the next time my toddler has a meltdown! Very well done! 5 stars.

The book Matt’s Swirly World: Children’s Book by Madeleine Matthews is a wonderful story to read. It is a book that is insightful and entertaining. I loved that the story gives a lesion on emotions and is very easy to read. The illustrations are great. I loved them because they are so colorful. I loved the characters of Matt and his mother. I found that Matt’s mother is insightful and resourceful. You will love reading about Matt and his mother. This book was informational and a joy to read. It is a story I would recommend.
This is a great book to read to small children, around five or six, to help them understand feelings of anger and disappointment. I would also recommend reading to kindergarten children to help them deal with the stresses of starting in a school setting.
First off, the illustrations in this book captivated my attention and once it can do that to me then it will definitely work on my daughter. I loved the lesson taught in this book about anger management. It’s something we should discuss with our kids and I would recommend that parents purchase this book. Highly recommended.
An ADORABLY illustrated teaching lesson for toddlers and young children how to deal with stress, anxiety and how to calm a temper tantrum before it happens. This book will be pulled out again and again, perfect tool for quiet time after melt downs. Brilliant conversation opener, coaxing kids to explain their feelings with words instead of anger.
I think this is a great way to explain and help a child focus on different ways to relax/calm down before or even after having a tantrum. Depending on the child this would help them, and also the parents also. I’ll be keeping this all in mind when dealing with my 6 year old grandson
This book is definitely for children and parents alike. At the moment my son is too young for this book. However when he is older I can help use this book as a tool for him to better understand his emotions and work through them in as healthy positive manner. Once again like the previous book of hers I read this one is beautifully illustrated and I cant wait to share it with my son.
This has beautiful illustrations and the story is amazing. However I could see it being read to kids in second and third grade. But also explained by a teacher at the same time. Because some of it is a little over their heads. However The underlying theme that if you breathe the anger will settle is really good and I think it should be practiced in classrooms. I really like the little boy Matt in his stories and I like the lessons that are learned.
This is a book that can help patents teach their children about a very difficult situation to deal with. Tantrums are very common in young children. This book gives and excellent explanation on anger, a feeling that is hard to understand and explain. The creative explanation and the calm way it was delivered was wonderfully done. I am sure this book will help may children get in touch with their feelings. Unfortunately, I can not comment on the illustrations because they did not come with the book but if they are anything like the cover page, they will be great.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I’m not sure about this book. The idea is good but… I think the words are not appropriated for small children. I don’t think they would understand half of the ideas. I had to read it twice to get the idea.
This is a good read for the age group specified and I’ll be reading it my son once he enters the age group for sure. The illustrations are gorgeous and it has a fantastic learning lesson for boys. You can get a similar book for girls.
This book is amazing. I cuddled up with my little ones and we read this together. They loved the story and the characters, and I loved the way they didnt even know that they were learning something while we read. I highly recommend this book to everyone.
I love how emotions are explained to the child in this story. More importantly, mom taking a couple deep breaths before dealing with the tantrum is a good reminder for parents.
Matt’s Swirly World: Children’s Book by Madeleine Matthews
My rating 5 out of 5 stars
This is a sweet book and the pictures are wonderfully made. The lesson is this story is that we shouldn’t let our disappointments build up into anger. The mom teaches her son that anger and disappointment don’t last and helps her son find an easy way to help rid himself of the negative feelings. Great story, great lesson, perfect to teach children and I thought adding the story of the dragon and fairy were a perfect touch to show a similar situation to the kid.
I read Matt’s Swirly World to my 3.5 year old, and he seemed to enjoy it. It was a little over his head, but he liked the pictures. He loved pointing out the dragon and his emotions on each page. I can see it would be a good book to help slightly older kids identify their emotions. Matt feels disappointment and anger when he has to leave the park. But his mother tells a story of a dragon and fairy to help him understand his feelings. In a fun way, she teaches him ways to cope with the feelings to let them pass. It also helps explain that emotions come and go, like a wave. The pictures were colorful and capturing, but the words were a little lengthy for young children. I would recommend this for maybe 5-8 year olds.
Matt’s Swirly World: Children’s Book by Madeleine Matthews. This book does have a great idea behind it. I found it easy to follow and enjoyed it. The illustrations were engaging and my nephew liked them, he also followed along nicely and liked the story. I’m glad I picked this book up for my nephew, we had fun reading it together and he took something away from it I believe. If you’re looking for a story that’s got a great lesson behind it also I definitely recommend this book. I’ll definitely be sharing this story with more of the children in my life. Four stars and highly recommended.
Matt’s Swirly World: Children’s Book by Madeleine Matthews. I really loved this book and wish I had it when my son was younger. Its the story of a mom who is trying to teach her son how to process his emotions in a positive way. It teaches us that an outing to the park leaves Matthew with happy feelings until its time to leave and then he has a meltdown. His mom tells him the story of a angry dragon and helps him realize a calm voice and telling a story can help soothe the child and stops his meltdown. This book is a great resource for parents because it helps them to learn what is behind tantrums and how to teach impulse control. Its tells us that talking in a calm voice can soothe a child and minimize meltdowns. It also teaches kids self control skills which in this crazy world is very important. This is a great children’s book that parents, grandparents and teachers can learn a lot from it!
There are two versions of this story. Ally’s Swirly World and Matt’s. I chose this version because I have an 8-year-old son. When kids have tantrums and what calms them down depends on the child. Matt doesn’t want to leave the park and fusses. His mom tells him a story.

Matt’s Swirly world is the first book that I have read by Ms. Matthews and it was adorable. I read this short story to my grandchildren and they where enchanted with this story.
We deal with tantrums from my granddaughters all the time, so this book helped me when it comes to her tantrums. I do know the reasons my granddaughter has been through a lot this year, so it really helped me.
I will read more of Ms. Matthews books to my grandchildren.

Matt’s Swirly World is a book for both kids and parents to read together. It teaches some parents in certain situations how to calm a child in the middle of a tantrum and also teaches kids how to react and control anger issues.
