I love this book, being a former EMT this book really hit home! When you leave your house that morning you’re never sure who or where your next call might be, your partner always has your back, and God speed to the ER! This book touched on a little of all that and so much more. Thank you to all the Emergency personnel for doing a great job and thank you Derek Adam for a great book!
If you’re looking for a dark read that plumbs the depths of one man’s madness, an inspirational tale of a hero that doesn’t view himself as such, the story of a relationship in peril and second chances, an action-packed thrill ride full of witty repartee, and a realistic view of what it’s like to be a paramedic on the front lines. This is a haunting romance tale for you. The best part? After all of the intensity and going through the proverbial emotional ringer, Adams still manages to pull off a happily ever after ending to this story. I’m expecting a book hangover for days after this one.
“I spent those months without you. I know what it’s like not to have you close. That’s not a life I want to live anymore.”
What a great story! I loved the characters, the story line, the excitement, the suspense, the twists, the heartache, the humor (I love Hunter), just all of it!!
Bobbie Badger has been a paramedic for over a decade. He’s seen it all – from the mundane transports, to the bad calls where he saved a life, to the calls for the ones that he couldn’t save. His dedication to duty has never wavered, even after the one call that has nearly destroyed his marriage to Holly. But, the guilt he feels is spilling over into every call, threatening to push him over a line he won’t be able to cross back over.
When both a neighbor and a friend wind up dead, Bobbie seems to be the prime suspect for being the last one to see them both alive. Other strange events make it clear that Bobbie is the target, but why? Who would be gunning for him and going to the lengths of killing those close to him? In a race to figure out who is behind it, is he putting Holly in danger too?
The characters are great. Bobbie, loyal to the job, struggling with guilt over not being able to save the one person he should have been able to save, with anger toward his now estranged wife for leaving coupled with the love he still feels for her. Hunter, the ladies man, the comic relief, but loyal to Bobbie to the end. Then, we have Holly. I loved her. She’s strong, sassy, sexy and provides the center that Bobbie so desperately needs to find his way back.
The author is prior EMS, which adds legitimacy to the details of the calls Bobbie and his partner Hunter respond to. I love that. First responders have to deal with tragedy and loss on daily basis. They see the worst in our society – violence, addiction, neglect, abuse. They are there holding our hand as we’re being cut out of twisted metal, they’re there helping save our parents, our spouses, children and friends. I cannot imagine the mental toll it can have and I applaud those in the industry who followed their calling none the less.
I’d highly recommend this one to everyone!
An action packed, suspenseful romance that was also full of extremely funny one liners that had tears running down my face. The characters were written with great depth and meshed well together within the story. I really enjoyed this debut novel and will be reading more from this author in the future.
