Will Mary and Betty survive a deadly night lost in a mansion consumed with a horrific secret?
Mary Holland is on her way to Maine to attend a funeral with her best friend Betty. At first the trip appears normal but when Betty ends up getting Mary lost on a stormy back road, the trip quickly turns into a nightmare that pulls them into a night filled with secrets, confusing questions, and deadly … questions, and deadly enemies.
After running her car into a flooded ditch Mary and Betty set out on foot and end up at a spooky old mansion sitting alone in the middle of the woods. Desperate for help they approach the mansion and are quickly chased inside by a dangerous dog. Once inside they become trapped in a hideous game designed by a monster lurking within. With nowhere to run and no way out, Mary and Betty begin fighting their way through a long night, struggling to escape.

I really liked Mary, she is level headed and knows when to step back and review all the information in order to get them out of a situation or work out the best steps forward. Betty unfortunately is very timid and has a terrible habit of fainting and to be honest it became a bit annoying along wit repeating words. I liked the mystery of the story and the fact that who you thought was the murderer kept changing along with you feeling like you were in the maze of a house also. This is a good book don’t get me wrong, however it just didn’t grab me like others written by Wendy Meadows.

I just love these ladies although Betty faints way too much. Worried she may have something going on other than syncope by fright. Yet these two ladies can find more trouble and dead bodies than a cemetery. They are awesome ladies and keep me reading with page-turning action and twisty mystery. Lots of amusement too.

Mary and Betty are on their way to the funeral when Betty gets the girls lost. They end up in a mansion for the night. But it’s gonna be a long night for the girls. Once they get in the mansion, they are trapped. Can they get out and find the help they need? You will need to read the book. I have not read any of the other books in this series, but I can say I prefer other books by this author. Maybe I missed something by not read the other books. Not a bad story, just not as good as her other ones in my opinion. I voluntarily reviewed a free ARC of this book from Booksprout.
As usual Mary and Betty are up to something. They are always up to looking in to mysteries and deaths. You have to laugh at poor Betty, but Mary has patience to deal with her. You have to read the book. It was enjoyable to read.

Allow about a day for this somewhat family-friendly suspense story, which starts off slowly but comes to a WICKED end.

Betty receives a call that her aunt has died and must go to Maine to attend the funeral. Mary decides to take the trip with her, but they soon find themselves lost on a stormy night somewhere on the back roads. With no other choice, they walk to a spooky looking mansion with hopes that someone is home. What they discover is a dead body and lots of strange occurrences which somehow relate to Betty’s aunt, her aunt’s widow, and Betty’s cousin. Can Mary and Betty sort out the mystery of the dead body and escape the mansion before they become the next victims?
I enjoyed the characters of Mary and Betty. Mary is a strong, intelligent, and very compassionate journalist, while Betty is her nervous, sheltered, and almost child-like best friend. Because of Betty’s nerves, she has a habit of fainting at the wrong moments which sometimes is humorous and other times puts the girls in a whole lot of trouble.
This is a delightful cozy mystery filled with a mix of mystery, suspense, madcap adventure, a tad of humor, and lots of twists and turns.

Mary had more than a little scare! As the story first opens, Betty and Mary seem to jump at every little noise and dangerous thing – real or imagined. Dark and rainy night, funeral, lost in the country. Trapped in a spooky house. Victoriana mad, there are spooky secret passages, disappearing dead bodies and a large, vicious dog. It all seems a bit silly.
A fun little story with silly Betty fainting at the drop of a hat for no decent reasons.
And then…… evil doers abound, betrayals, complicated, missing wills – and after all the known bad guys have left, evil remains.
A wild and woolly murder mystery!
