And it’s in that collection that Mary discovers the mysterious book – ancient, hand-written, bound in a scaly skin, and written in an … and written in an unknown language.
But then the book changes, and permits her to read it. It is a magical book, and it’s willing to teach her magic! A whole new world opens up to Mary, a world wondrous and strange. The rational, scientific young woman discovers that this world contains secret magicians, uncanny beings, artifacts of power – and dangers such as she had never imagined. This new world brings Mary new friends. But also powerful and dangerous enemies.
Mary Bennet and the Bingley Codex is the first book of the Regency Mage series, and begins Mary’s journey through this magical world. If you enjoy Jane Austen, Harry Potter, and Georgette Heyer, you’ll love Mary Bennet and the Bingley Codex because it blends Regency comedy of manners and fantasy high adventure.

Having just burned through all four extant Mary Bennet books, (in the middle of the 2021 Ice Storm/continuing pandemic) I am now declaring this series to be the Ted Lasso of the Regency magic genre. They are the comfort food of books. They are, in fact, like reading chocolate, and I don’t want to pressure the author, but certainly more of the series would be greatly appreciated, should they be on the horizon. Charming, engaging characters, witty plots, and clever world building.
In this Pride & Prejudice sequel Mary Bennet finally escapes from her mother’s machinations and goes and stays with the Bingleys. In their estate called Pleasaunce, Mary finds the library she has dreamed about and starts her cataloging task, and discovers the books of magic. And so her adventures starts.
A very enjoyable and well-written story, with its cast of characters that are introduced throughout the story.
There are four books in this series. All are harmless light reads.
A wonderful take off from Pride and Prejudice, where oft neglected sister Mary blooms into a unique and unexpected character at home with magic and mystical turns of fate and unexpected twists. A delightful read that I thoroughly enjoyed, and I am looking forward to reading the rest in the series. Well written, well developed, good plotting and still true to Jane Austen’s original story and characters!
Fun book. Good to see the character of Mary developed.
Light, fun read.
Although I’ve enjoyed Joyce Harmon’s Regencies in the past, I wasn’t sure how I felt about yet another book spinning off the Bennet sisters from Pride and Prejudice. This one has overtones of paranormal and witchcraft, which can be difficult to pull off believably. However, although the start was a bit slow, Ms. Harmon handled the backstory of the Bennets skillfully and develops Mary as a believable and sympathetic character. The storyline picks up as it progresses, leading to a truly absorbing climax. I expect to read more in this series.
This is a great series
I usually dislike books that are based on Jane Austen’s work because they simply aren’t good enough to be worthy of her. This is not a masterpiece but it was fun and smart.
Spin off of Pride and Prejudice with Mary Bennett with magic tossed in along with a library of books and a persistent suitor.
I would have liked a more tangle of magic!
Very original
For fans of “Pride and Prejudice,” this novel combines elements of the Harry Potter series with the backdrop of Jane Austin’s settings. A refreshing look at what has become of Mary Bennett, the middle girl who is more interested in intellectual pursuits rather than acknowledging that “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” With Mary’s new discovered prowess over the social mores of her time, Joyce Harmon breathes new life into a time of social constraints.
A wonderful beginning to the series. I loved Joyce’s portrayal of the Bennet family and her take on the circumstances and relationships, and Mary was delightfully courageous.
loved it. I’d love to read more about Mary.
Light romance with a hint of mystery. Cleanly written and believable enough to enjoy.
Very cute twist on the Bennet family and a nice take on Mary and her sisters – especially a good look at Jane! I liked the magic system too. Low-conflict, but really fascinating, and Mary got her own in the end. Interested in picking up the sequels!
Delicious! Loved this!
Pretty good. I like pride and prejudice so it was fun reading some more about the characters and new ones. It’s you know far fetch but I enjoyed it.
What could be more fun than Pride and Prejudice’s least loved Bennet sister discovering that she has magical powers? A really amusing read that Jane herself might have enjoyed immensely.
