From the USA Today Bestselling Series
There are three things you need to know about Kat Tanner (aka Kathleen Tyson… and yes, she is that Kathleen Tyson): 1) She’s determined to make good decisions, 2) She must get married ASAP, and 3) She knows how to knit.
Being a billionaire heiress isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. In fact, it sucks. Determined to live a quiet life, Kat Tanner changed her … life, Kat Tanner changed her identity years ago and eschewed her family’s legacy. But now, Kat’s silver spoon past has finally caught up with her, and so have her youthful mistakes. To avoid imminent disaster, she must marry immediately; it is essential that the person she chooses have no romantic feelings for her whatsoever and be completely trustworthy.
Fortunately, she knows exactly who to ask. Dan O’Malley checks all the boxes: single, romantically indifferent to her, completely trustworthy. Sure, she might have a wee little crush on Dan the Security Man, but with clear rules , expectations and a legally binding contract, Kat is certain she can make it through this debacle with her sanity— and heart— all in one piece.
Except, what happens when Dan O’ Malley isn’t as indifferent— or as trustworthy— as she thought?

Just because I don’t wish to discuss putting junk in my poop-shoot doesn’t mean I’m a prude.
The best banter in the entire book once again comes from the knitting group. These women are hilarious! I laughed until I cried! (A side note: I want an entire book written about one of their knitting nights. Nothing else, just their night together!)
MOVING ON!
I’m not sure what I thought we would get with ‘Marriage of Inconvenience’, but it wasn’t this. ‘Marriage of Inconvenience’, was multi-layered goodness, iced with a dollop of humanity and sprinkled with hilarity!
And this was the problem for me. I have written and erased and started my review over so many times. I knew no one wanted to read a review that was as long as a chapter in this book! And yet, I couldn’t edit out all of the good things I have to say about it AND give you a concise description of it! So, I’m sorry, if you choose to not read the rest of this review, just know YOU NEED TO READ THE BOOK!
I want to go back and re-read this series because I am intrigued by Kat and need to meet her again. I want to remember how she interacted with her knitting group and Dan.
Up until this book, Kat was hiding a secret and we didn’t even know it. She was quiet, reserved (the person you see in the corner at a party). It wasn’t until her history and secrets were revealed that I began to understand her personality.
Her mother suffered from mental illness and was institutionalized while Kat was just a small child. Her father’s only concern showed to her was his belief she would surely develop schizophrenia too. He constantly watched and waited for signs. And that was the extent of his parenting. Because of this, she was a pro at self-blame. She questioned everything she did and everyone’s intentions towards her.
In her teenage years, she was afraid of becoming like her mother so she wanted to live her life to the fullest, going wild and making poor choices, she was at rock bottom when she visited her mother in the mental hospital. It was there she had a light bulb moment, she can live each day to its fullest even if she, at some point in her life, was diagnosed with schizophrenia. So she turned her life around, went to school, got a job and also made a concerted effort to learn the family business.
Kat was the only heir to her families pharmaceutical company and fortune which pisses of her cousin because he believes the company should be his. He is a vile, evil man, with a side business worthy of any villain. Kat’s cousin Caleb, the CEO of Caravel Pharmaceuticals, wants to have her committed to a mental hospital. He wants what he feels is rightly his, ‘what he’s owed’!
She has three options:
Option one: let Caleb become guardian of her person and property. Where he would immediately commit her and take control of her inheritance and her controlling shares in Caravel Pharmaceuticals.
Option two: execute a medical power of attorney to someone close to her.
Option three: get married. By doing so her husband would become her medical power of attorney.
Kat chose option three. A marriage of inconvenience with the man she’s had a crush on for years! Dan.
My intentions are to deserve him.
Dan is definitely one of my top favorite male character’s created by Penny Reid! He was alpha, sensitive, vulnerable, understanding, caring, loving, generous, patient … I could keep going. He loves her for who she is, all her oddities, all her insecurities and holds her close, wraps her up in his arms and shows her she is worthy of love. He too, has family issues, namely his brother — who we met before. Yeah, he’s back reigning his crazy down on Kat. But Dan is there. He’s always there. And he wants Kat and will have her, anyway he can!
Trust me that I want every part of you. I stared at him, panic ballooning within me. What if parts of me are messy? Or ugly? He smirked. Parts of you are ugly and messy. I still want you. I want the ugly and the beautiful and everything in between. You don’t pick and choose the parts of a person you want. Sh*t, I’m the ugliest f*cker I know and I want to give it all to you.
Filled with passion and tenderness, Marriage of Inconvenience is a phenomenal “conclusion” (say it ain’t so) to the Knitting in the City series.
I have to tell you my limits because you have to trust me. So you have to know…you mean something to me. It’s never going to be a finish line with you or something to cross off a list. It’s—I want —I need—it to be everything.
5 “I want to deserve you“ Stars!!
I’m giving this book a high five, jazz hands and finger guns (pew pew) of awesomeness!
I finished this one over a week and a half ago and I’m having trouble writing my review. I feel like my fumbling words can not do this book justice. It’s the end of one of my top favorite series and I didn’t want it to end. Someone hold me! I feel like I’m saying goodbye to my fictional friends and family. Don’t go! I wish it could on forever and ever. I would love to just sit there in their knitting circle and knit with them all. I can’t knit and probably really stink at it, but I know one of them would teach me so I wouldn’t have to learn it on the streets. Right? I can fake it till I make it!
“Knitting means never having to say you’re sorry.”
Oh Kat and Dan, *sigh* you both gave me a million butterflies. I loved the build up between these two throughout all of the other books. It made this one I think, the best one in the series. I couldn’t read it fast enough. I also highlighted the crap out of it, there are sooooo many wonderful parts. So, so many. Dan with his “naught-secret voice” that swears like a trucker to Kat with her yarn addiction and neat and tidy life. This book had it all for me. Hit it right out of the park I tell you. I heart these two together so much! I feel like Penny mic dropped this one and I’m over here slow clapping.
“I want it all, Kit-Kat. I want all of you.” And we all want you Dan!
I liked it. I didn’t love it, like I loved most of the other Penny Reid books I’ve read. Maybe my expectations were set too high after reading Scenes from the Hallway. The dialogue was classic Penny Reid. There were definitely some quotes and lines that I either found funny or identified with. But other than that…it fell flat
Marriage of Inconvenient is the latest and final book in the long running Knitting in the City series and takes fans on a journey to remember by retuning moments to where the gang really shone whilst giving as a totally new story that will have everything that you love about this series. Finally it’s Kat turn and her story is one that like the others stories that have come before her. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows and the story runs parallel in the same timeframe as other books . It is a book definitely written for the fans and there is plenty to love about the latest couple.
I couldn’t remember much about Kat or Dan the security man except for the brief mentions in other stories. No surprise given that Kat has had a monster secret that basically makes her current life an entire lie. She may be in control of her life as she likes it but it was about to change. Plus she was totally quiet and all things considered it was no surprise when it all came tumbling out . Well Kat got quite the story and she about to take Dan along for the ride. It blew my mind and honestly I enjoy the final instalment not only for the romance of course but the concept that she tied into whole scenario.
This was truly the perfect way to say goodbye to them with an adventure that gets the whole gang involved. Like the others books, there is a strong storyline ripped from the headlines. I like the idea of Kat being an heiress to a company that she believes she not ready totally responsible for. Instead she being forced into a situation where she can’t control the decisions total and being forced to allow Dan into her world despite having hesitations. Allowed to see that she shied away from what truly mattered and need to embrace the good and the bad. With help of her friends of course and those are some of my favourite moments in this book. Aside from the ones with Dan of course.
For two people who seem totally opposite when we seem together for the first time in this book. It was surprised how much they had in common aside from the obvious. It allowed to explore many things and this book never got boring.
I loved seeing everyone come together to help one another and seeing key memorable scenes from another POV. Kat was truly the perfect heroine to end the series, with an arc that was part redemption, self discovery and romance. The final book won’t disappoint but I’m said to see this series end.
Addicted. That one word pretty much sums up how I feel about reading Penny Reid’s books and so it is given that Marriage of Inconvenience is my much anticipated book of 2018. In this seventh installment, Reid still has me hooked and addicted to these characters who have a special place in my heart.
“I have to tell you my limits, because you have to trust me. So you have to know…you mean something to me. It’s never going to be a finish line with you, or something to cross off a list. It’s-I want-I need-it to be everything. ”
The title alone pretty much gives readers as to what to expect in the storyline but the reason why you need to read this book is because Penny Reid continues to wow her readers with a heartfelt, smart, witty, and beautiful story with charming characters. And of course, Dan will steal your heart as he was the heart and soul of this book. So if you are looking for a sweet, palpable, and beautiful love story then I highly recommend you to read this book.
Wow. Just wow. Penny Reid is truly and incredible storyteller. I loved, loved, loved Kat and Dan’s story. This was an absolute joy to read, incredibly entertaining and detailed and full of so much heart! It was excellent!
This was a great end to the series. But, I think there is the porential to enjoy Kat and Dan’s story without knowing everyone else (it would just be a giant tease to want to get the back story on all the secondary characters).
I have read all the books in the series, so I trusted the author, but I also was a little nervous about Kat. We don’t really get to know her because she is so buttoned up, and I felt protective of Dan because we get plenty of deomnstrations of what a nice guy he is. Happily, Kat is able to start talking to him in an actual conversation 20% into the book.
And, as I knew would happen, Kat has a fantastically-shown backstory that that gave me comapssion for her. She and Dan are able to have a great relationship that builds on their insta-attraction two years in the brewing, with well-written conversations, and banter, and “grown up on opposite sides of the track but some how their expereinces mesh perfectly”.
We got to see a lot of the friend-chemistry that has grown over the years with the original knitting and crocheting women, and with their male partners. That’s one of the best bits of the series: the people who have already has their book remain complex characters who get to grow and evolve and matter even as they are relgated to secondary characters in someone else’s book.
Gah! It’s over! I’m so happy and so sad at the same time. I discovered Penny Reid by accident last year and I INHALED her books. I fell in love with all the ladies of Knitting in the City series and was so pleased with how Ms. Reid wrapped it all up.
OH Dan the Security Man…..we’ve known him since book one. His been a solid force in the background from the beginning. And FINALLY after six books and a couple of novellas, we get to see him and Kat come together! It was beautiful.
Kat is such a unique character with her very own set of insecurities and issues and a CRAZY background! I just can’t believe how intricate everything was and how obviously well researched when it came to the pharmaceutical industry. But really, this is Penny Reid so I really shouldn’t have been surprised! Her books are romance novels but SO MUCH MORE.
So the romance in each of these books are completely individual to each book, but I would never call them standalone’s. They really need to be read one right after the other. The characters are so involved in each others lives and Penny always, ALWAYS finds a way to involve the ladies and their men in each others stories.
As Penny has heavily warned on social media, this book has MUCH more language in it than her other books because the character of Dan happens to be a big potty mouth. I honestly didn’t think it had as much as I was expecting, but it is much more than her other books. There is one and half sex scenes towards the end. There are a couple of heavy kissing and petting scenes earlier in the book. And a bit of violence (fight scenes, no killing).
So what are you waiting for?! Go start book one, Neanderthal Meets Human and be prepared to fall in love!

My very first thought when I read about Kat and Dan came completely out of left field. They reminded me of a popcorn brand from years ago called Slap My Butter and Call Me Salty. (I’m not even kidding about the name, lol) I’m not usually a fan of food metaphors, but this was the perfect pairing!
Kat=butter. Smooth, firm exterior, until it warms up and begins to soften.
(Dan had to overcome Kat’s tough psychological walls)
Dan=salty. Well seasoned, with a bit of bite when consumed in copious amounts.
(Kat had to learn to deal with Dan’s emotional barriers)
Actually they’re a bit of both and that’s what made them blend together so well.
So anyways…I was happy with the story! The beginning covered Kat and Dan’s unusual relationship. I devoured every word at an alarming rate! I was happy dancing these two finally had their moment and it was worth waiting for!
The second half convinced me Penny could execute a cozy mystery with aplomb! The gang comes out In full support of Kat and Dan, there’s fascinating tidbits on pharmaceuticals (true or opinions I haven’t a clue, but it was food for thought), and I especially loved the sleuthing! I thought I had Kat’s devious cousin figured out, but I wasn’t even close to his nefarious plans. It was great!
There were also some interesting topics covered. While I realize they stood out because they’re not issues typically discussed-in books or general conversation-they provided a whole other layer to the story itself. The female orgasm/sexual inadequacy, mental health and the stigmatism associated with a diagnosis, along the pharmaceutical industry. Penny’s stories are like onions. Just when you peel a layer back, there’s another, and another, etc., but they provide a rich texture and dimension I haven’t really found elsewhere.
Intelligent, sassy, and unique leading ladies and men, real issues wrapped in brain matter and a side of snark, and just enough romance to satisfy my HEA quota, the Knitting in the City series has become a fast favorite of mine!
(Please excuse the food metaphors. I have a head cold and they’re all I can come up with right now!)
Favorite Quotes:
They have this turkey sub with stuffing and cranberry sauce. It’s like Thanksgiving in a sandwich, but without the additional seasoning of my drunk uncle Zip’s politics, or my sister Cathy’s failed attempts at pumpkin pie. The woman never met a recipe she didn’t want to ruin by making it vegan. What the fuck is almond milk? They don’t call it ‘nut juice’ but that’s exactly what it is.
My stomach colluded with my heart to switch places because—if my brain could be trusted—it looked like he was giving me the sexy eyes.
He doesn’t scare me. He’s older than both of us, but he looks like the sort that still trips over his umbilical cord, you know? Needs everything spelled out with alphabet soup, doesn’t get the picture unless it’s finger-painted.
Her tone was so salty, it made me thirsty.
I stared at Dan, my lips parting in wonder. He’d just used some variation of the F-word as a noun, verb, adverb, and adjective all in one sentence. I didn’t know whether to be mortified or impressed.
I frowned, my mood shifting suddenly because, who would name their dog Bark Wahlberg? Only the funniest, cleverest, most amazing man in the world, that’s who.
He’ll be back. He’s like my mailman… He always comes back and brings bad news.
My Review:
I loved every word of this cleverly written and highly amusing book. Over five hundred pages of delightfully arranged words and I would covet five hundred more of the same. I adored this smart, quirky, and enticing group of characters and could never tire of reading of their antics, shenanigans, and perilous adventures. The cheese-loving heiress Kat was advised to quickly find herself married to prevent her sinister and nefarious cousin (AKA Tiny Satan) from gaining control of her treasure chest of assets and family’s business empire by appointing himself as her guardian and having her committed. Enter Dan the sexy security man – foul-mouthed, expletive-spewing, creative cussing, bawdy talking Dan; who was excellence personified and my new BBF. Written from my favorite dual POV, this book was complete perfection. Humor, a sweet romance, danger, an original and well-crafted plot, and top-notch writing – all in one place. There was nothing more I could have asked for. I treasure and idolize the Divine Penny Reid whose prose had me Googling the Five Knuckle Shuffle. I am always excited about learning new things 😉
Love this author! I have every book she has written and love each one! This book was sweet, suspenseful, and thought provoking. Highly recommend! You won’t be disappointed. Warning, use of the f-word is abundant. That did not bother me, as I use it frequently myself. Just an fyi.
I am a huge fan of a Penny Reid’s brand of quirky, smart humor and reading Marriage of Inconvenience, I was not disappointed. I especially love how I was completely pulled into the emotions of the story, laughing, crying, and swooning in turn.
Both Kat and Dan are characters who have been fairly quiet in previous books where you just get a hint that Kat isn’t quite the unassuming office worker that she seems on the outside.
“My boss had initiated a hug last winter break. After giving me an effusive speech about how valuable I was and handing over my bonus check, she’d hugged me and I’d turned into a statue. When she’d backed off and apologized, I made some excuse about having menstrual cramps, heartburn, gas, and diarrhea. That’s right, all four.”
Kat’s world seems to be crashing down around her and she has to appeal to Dan to help save her and protect her.
Dan, the security man, is so gruff on the outside that I would have never suspected his inner sweetness! And he swears more that anyone I could imagine and uses his swears in the best way!! Definitely COLORFUL!
“The last time I was off-kilter and within Dan’s proximity, my brain had suggested topics like, Talk about the weather. My mouth had translated ‘weather’ to mean, hurricanes are a type of weather, let’s talk about death by drowning.”
Although Marriage of Inconvenience can be read as a standalone, in this story we catch up with many of the characters from previous Knitting in the City series books, so there may be spoiler-ish storylines. And really each book in this series is more wonderful than the last, so none should be missed. Marriage of Inconvenience is a perfect, though bittersweet end to this series.
“I want it all, Kit-Kat. I want all of you.”
I’m such a freaking broken record when it comes to Penny Reid because I pretty much adore everything she writes. Her books are oh so comfortable for me and her books have become comfort reads and I love that she NEVER dumbs it down. Thank the baby Jesus.
Now to be completely honest, I’ve hoarded the whole Knitting in the City series and I’ve read all but two plus a novella and I’m so freaking glad my time with the Knitting crew is not (completely) over.
I’ve read enough books to have wanted Dan and Kat’s book just as bad as everyone else.
Ever feel thankful for a book? Just completely grateful that an author poured her heart and soul onto paper, in the form of a book? That’s exactly how I felt while reading this book, it was in that moment, perfection.
Reid’s trademark humor, passion and absolutely incredible storytelling with a Penny Reid flair are all present and accounted for in Marriage of Inconvenience. I laughed my butt off so many times, I lost count. I also broke out into a sweat when Dan put on his charming pants, which, let’s face it, he wears them all the time. Kat’s arc of character growth is pretty big and was a pleasure to read. Plus the whole Knitting crew makes appearances and OMG that epilogue! Ms. Reid also throws in a nice bit of suspense plot and relocates to Boston for much of the book. While in Boston, we are introduced to and get to know Dan’s family. Kat is very much in need of some kind of family support because hers is gone and what’s left is undesirable. Seeing how Dan’s mom supports Kat gave me all kinds of warm feelings.
If you’ve read all of the other books, I feel pretty sure that you’ll enjoy this one as well. For those that have not picked up the Knitting in The City series, what are you waiting for?
It was wonderful and it closed out this series in the way it should, perfectly. It was funny, sexy, smart, and it was simply a great read. This series is amazing. I definitely recommend this book, this author and this series
Marriage of Inconvenience by Penny Reid is the seventh full length romance in her Knitting in the City series. This is Dan the Security Man and Kit-Kat’s story, also known as Dan O’Malley and Kathleen Caravel-Tyson. Told in dual POV and can be read as a standalone this is yet another fantabulously wonderful tale from one of my absolute favorite authors, ever!
I absolutely adored getting to see more of Dan’s perspective having become familiar with him throughout the series. His outlook on Kat, his relationship with his brother, his origins in Boston and his Dog Wally’s real name!
Kit-Kat was always an enigma throughout the previous books. Quite, supportive, loyal and obviously attracted to Dan but with little else to go on seeing things from her perspective was also eye-opening and keenly interesting.
These two mis-matched people together crated an absolutely perfect whole. Despite the difference int their upbringings, one person’s lack was another’s strength and the depth of their feelings for each other just could NOT be kept down. An addictive page-turner that was devoured in as short a time as possible I highly recommend any and all things Penny Reid. Enjoy!
A Marriage of Inconvenience with the possibility of more? Sure. Count me in. A Marriage of inconvenience skillfully crafted with engaging characters, a fresh spin to the trope, and a wonderful blend of wit, sexual tension and heartfelt moments that will make it impossible for you to put your eReader down? ABSOLUTELY!
Kat Tanner is a reluctant heiress. She would have liked to cut all strings to her family, but now it seems that in order to circumvent certain disaster she is in dire need of a husband. Someone who can be trusted and won’t want emotional entanglements. And the only man who fits the bill is Dan the security man who she has a crush on. Thinking that a business proposition with defined expectations would suit the seemingly indifferent man best, Kat takes the plunge hoping her heart will survive. What would she do though if she had it wrong and Dan is interested?
As with all beloved series, the ending is bittersweet. We want to see everyone happily ride into the sunset while wishing the series would keep on going, but without a doubt the overriding emotion was joyful excitement over getting to know a couple whose story has been in the making for a long time. I enjoyed every single beautifully strung word and was pleased and satisfied with this last chapter in the Knitting in the City Series.
Reid pens a fascinating and delightful romance that vibrates with humor, drama and a whole lot of wonderful friendship from the loveable knitters and their respective partners. The antics, camaraderie and loyalty between the ladies will make you want to be part of their close knit tribe.
The chemistry between Kat and Dan is appealing, full of warmth and enhanced by Reid’s brilliant plotting and character development which gives us two seemingly different individuals with different backgrounds and equally dissimilar struggles but who complement one another perfectly. I loved Kat’s journey of self-discovery and hers and Dan’s heart melting romance.
There were so many incredible moments and the best aren’t restricted to the romantic portions. Besides the aforementioned knitting sisterhood there’s also Penny’s ability to educate while entertaining. I always appreciate the snippets of information included in the epigraphs as related to the story. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next!
Marriage of Inconvenience is standalone contemporary romance by Penny Reid. T told from both points of view with lots of cursing and happily ever after that will leave you delighted. A must read for any romantic comedy lover.
Review:
It’s done. And now I’m sad.
First the story:
Kat Tanner is a connoisseur of cheese. She is a loyal friend. She is a level-headed adult. Kat Tanner is also Kathleen Tyson, heir to a billion dollar pharmaceutical fortune. Kat is also a little broken, and hesitant. Kat Tanner has a giant crush on Dan O’Malley.
Dan O’Malley is a nice guy. He’s loyal, he would do anything for his friends, he hates disappointing his mother, and he has a crush on Kat Tanner.
So what happens when Kat needs Dan’s help to escape a malicious trap set by one of her family members? What happens when two people who have liked each other from afar are pushed into a situation neither of them though they would be in?
My feelings:
I’ve been thinking how to write this review, but nothing good is coming to mind. I’ll just say this: Penny Reid does Dan and Kat justice. Once again she’s written a book that has taught me things, alongside entertaining me. Anyone who’s been following the Knitting in the City series has been waiting on pins and needles for Dan and Kat to finally get together. Their own friends have been watching the two pine away for each other.
This story has been a long time coming, and I’ve been frustrated at some of Dan and Kat’s actions. Especially Kat, who’s kept herself away. But once they were together everything made sense, because these two people made sense. I think Kat describes what love is, really well. Love is when you want to deserve that person, and Kat truly did want to deserve Dan.
And that ending. The epilogue was beautiful, but I liked the fact that Penny didn’t tie everything in a nice big bow. She left room for change, and I hope to see these characters in other books as well.
The end made me melancholy, but I finished the book with a smile on my face.
