There are three things you need to know about Kat Tanner (aka Kathleen Tyson… and yes, she is that Kathleen Tyson): 1) She’s determined to make good decisions, 2) She must get married ASAP, and 3) She knows how to knit.
Being a billionaire heiress isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. In fact, it sucks. Determined to live a quiet life, Kat Tanner changed her … life, Kat Tanner changed her identity years ago and eschewed her family’s legacy. But now, Kat’s silver spoon past has finally caught up with her, and so have her youthful mistakes. To avoid imminent disaster, she must marry immediately; it is essential that the person she chooses have no romantic feelings for her whatsoever and be completely trustworthy.
Fortunately, she knows exactly who to ask. Dan O’Malley checks all the boxes: single, romantically indifferent to her, completely trustworthy. Sure, she might have a wee little crush on Dan the Security Man, but with clear rules , expectations and a legally binding contract, Kat is certain she can make it through this debacle with her sanity— and heart— all in one piece.
Except, what happens when Dan O’ Malley isn’t as indifferent— or as trustworthy— as she thought?

It’s always the quiet ones who blow your mind once you take the time to get to know that person and truly understand everything that makes that person who she is…all of the best and worst parts of her…all of her insecurities…her dreams…her worries…her guilt and most of all, her backstory that sheds more than enough light on who/what has shaped her personality and made it difficult for her to accept herself and all of her neurotic impulses and overthinking tendencies.
Kat has always been the shy and reserved woman in her circle of knitting ladies, allowing her friends’ dominant personalities to reign, simply enjoying the comfort and feel of family that she reveled in each and every Tuesday night and all the other times they got together to celebrate one of their own. And while I completely understood her bystander interactions because I am who introvert twin, I was desperate to find out more about Kat because she intrigued me and because she caught Dan the Security Man’s eye from the very beginning and I’ve had quite the crush on Dan’s foul mouth and endearing personality. Because I wanted to figure out everything I could about Kat, every scene that she was present in, in the other books in Penelope Reid’s Knitting in the City series, Kat became my focus; I wanted to get a handle on who she was and understand what her quietness as well as what seemed to be the moments she got lost in her head illustrated about her. And while I didn’t learn too much about Kat, I knew that if I just held on until Penny Reid was ready to tell Kat’s story that I would get my answers so that I could fully appreciate everything that Kat has been through and all of the awesomeness that makes her who she is, even if her self-perception is skewed.
I don’t think I’ve read a more dynamic and multifaceted heroine than Kathleen Caravel-Tyson, partly because each one of her monikers sheds light on certain parts of her personality and background and partly because there are so many layers to who she is…that I was still discovering things about her up until the very end of her and Dan’s story. Kat Tanner, Kit-Kat, Mrs. O’Malley, sole heiress to the single largest privately held pharmaceutical fortune, executive assistant at an Architecture firm…all of these names illuminate different parts of her personality, helping readers to acquire a well-rounded view of all that Kat is as well as what she is not, even though she has a difficult time believing it.
I’ve always appreciated the kind of man that Dan O’Malley is. He’s a loyal friend, a fantastic bodyguard and the perfect second-in-command to Quinn Sullivan. And I truly believe that his less than stellar choices when he was a teen actually makes him a much more understanding and badass adult, and boy does he prove me right in Marriage of Inconvenience. Because I’m an obsessed fan of this series, I’ve witnessed every exchange between Kat and Dan, and I have been impatiently waiting for Reid to put me inside Kat and Dan’s psyche so I can hear what they’re thinking about one another and just how obsessive they’ve become about each other while they seem oblivious to the fact that their feelings are more than reciprocated. And, I can honestly say that getting both of their perspectives and watching them misunderstand one another, assume things about each other, and ultimately accept every part of one another was frustrating, entertaining, and downright swoon worthy.
Marriage of Inconvenience is one heck of a smart romance. Like always, Penny Reid takes a stereotypical plot line – this time a fake marriage – and makes it her own with her quirky, lovable characters and a mountain of truths beneath all the white lies. Kat and Dan couldn’t be any more perfect for one another, but Kat needs to believe that on her own, which won’t happen until she works through her issues and accepts her past and herself and sees herself like everyone who loves her does, and Dan is for sure included in that group.
As sad as I am for Kat and Dan’s story to be the last in the series, I’ve adored each knitter’s book and the way Penny Reid brings her heroine’s soulmate into her life. Part of the reason why so many romance readers adore this series is because they can relate to Reid’s female leads’ personalities and revel in the sweet and sexy ways Reid’s main characters get together and make their lives so much fuller because they found the perfect person for all of their idiosyncrasies. I can honestly say that I love every single one of the heroes and heroines in the Knitting in the City series, and their stories will definitely be ones that I reread because they’re just that amazing!
5+ Poison Apples
I absolutely loved this book. Humor and deep perspective mingle together to create a satisfying reading experience full of substance. Family, romantic relationships, women’s sexual health, Jewish tradition, mental illness… so much is addressed in this novel and it all cycles back around to taking control of your own narrative. Penny Reid, thank you for giving me a bit of respite during crazy 2020.
All wrapped up, the couples are happy sated and have wonderful lives. ~Sigh~ I enjoyed all their stories but loved the ones that tied to the Winston brothers the most. I have a thing for those southern boys what can I say.
Kat, the mysterious knitter, she has always been aloof in the group. She has good reason, her parents, oye they are, well it’s not good. Tiny Satan, one of her only available family members is just so ARGUH ! Holy shitake this girl has been on the hard pointy side of the rock and a hard place. If you’ve read along with the series you have seen hints of her lusty feelings for Dan the Security Man, and maybe some of his for her. Do either of them act on them? Hahahahha, no. Oh you wait now, Little Satan does something helpful for once, it’s dastardly and underhanded but brings the two together to finally face those feelings. It may be the only good things he’s ever done. 😀 Dan is Smoking hot, Kat is burning for some lovin’ but they can’t get past first base, why ? Read the book. All I’ve told you is the tame easy part of the story. Later in the story the whole gang comes together and it’s a beautiful thing to read.
I eagerly anticipated the release of this book, the conclusion to the Knitting in the City Series, and I was not at all disappointed. I loved Kat and Dan’s story. It was sweet, sexy, and laugh-out-loud funny! I especially LOVED Dan and his fantastically foul mouth – his creative cursing was hysterical. The epilogue gave a glimpse of the future and left me with the hope for more. . . Another spin off maybe? I guess we’ll see!
I was so looking forward to Dan and Kat resolving their issues and finally see them together! It was everything I hoped for. I loved seeing what Kat was coming from and finally understanding exactly why she changed her name. Also, i really liked that the first part of the story was at the same time of Marie and Matt’s story (Dating-ish) because there were several scenes I wanted to see from another perspective.
A lot of references to the other books in the series which i loved, and I really liked the second encounter with Seamus, he’s never gonna win against these tough girls!!
Dan and Kat were just as adorable as we would have thought and I love Dan’s family! Also, that epilogue? IT WAS EVERYTHING.
Incognito as Kat Tanner, Katherine is an heiress who suddenly needs to marry to avoid being committed on a trumped-up charge by her cousin who wants all of the power and money that the family company can give. Kat trusts Dan O’Malley, someone she has known for two years, despite not having conversed with him much, due to her attraction to him and a misunderstanding. Dan, the Security Man, knows it will be torture to be in a fake marriage, but if it bides him time to keep others from falling for her and vice versa, he is up for it. They both try to keep from falling in love amidst obstacles like complete trust, fear of broken hearts, and criminal forces against them. The book was an enjoyable read, especially since the main characters and recurring characters from the series are so likable. Reid takes you inside the minds of both Kat and Dan. Dan’s background had some rough elements, so he often uses the “f” expletive—somehow more acceptable in the book than I am comfortable with in real life. Reid has such an easy way of making thoughts and dialogue in her stories seem natural and you can always tell that she has done research on some topics to shed light on personality quirks and disorders, along with modern phenomena.
There was a lot of story and not enough connection with the two main characters.
There was so much going on that it took away from Kat and Dan.
The story was good but I wouldn’t say this is a romance book. Also these covers do not do the story justice. They don’t go together at all.
This book had a little romance but it was more about self discovery, friendship and family drama.
Then the ending was just her telling us everything that happened and us not getting to experience it.
I listened to this book and felt the narrators went well but if I would have read this book I wouldn’t have even finished.
Putting my love for this book into words is difficult. I became immediately obsessed with Dan O’Malley or as we have come to know him throughout the series Dan the Security Man. If you have a thing for Boston accents, a filthy mouth and tattoos then look no further!! This was my favorite book in the series by far. Kat and Dan are the definition of a relationship worth waiting for. I’m so glad Penny ended this series with these two.
Dan O’Malley is Quinn Sullivan’s second in command. He has been by his side from the very beginning having grown up together in Boston. He has grown past his tremulous/criminal past and now loves his job as a security expert. He is a business man with endless amounts of swagger and connections in all the right places. This makes him the perfect man for Kat to approach when she finds herself in a troublesome situation.
Kathleen Tanner is the shy, quiet member of the knitting club. She has been keeping a secret as she is actually a billionaire heiress to her family’s pharmaceutical company. To avoid it all being taken away from her she must get married to someone she can trust. She thinks it would be safe to approach her longtime crush Dan with this immediate need she’s facing, but their feelings immediately get the better of them both. These two ooze so much chemistry it was so fun and entertaining reading about them finally telling each other how they feel.
The epilogue in this book honestly brought tears to my eyes. This is such a tight knit group of friends, it was great getting a glimpse of them into their future. The families are beyond adorable and amazing, so much has changed but also remained the same. We also get a sight of a possible second generation of knitters!! Penny Reid is truly amazing!!
Penny continues to write smart, funny romances. Dan is now in my top ten list of book boyfriends. Read if you’ve read the rest of the Knitting in the City series. Read even if you haven’t. I bet if you haven’t read the others, you’ll want to after finishing this book. It is well worth reading all the book just to reach and read the epilogue.
5 stars by the time it should have wrapped up…3 – 3.5 stars for being overly drawn out near the end for absolutely no reason made this book really hard for me to rate.
———-
There’s really only three things you need to know about my feelings on this book:
#1. I enjoyed seeing this perfect for each other main couple get a second chance at romance after a very bizarre, big miscommunication two years earlier.
#2. You could feel their sweet, smexy connection/attraction from the get go.
#3. The intriguing sub-plot involving the crazy cousin and the heroine’s family business went from really engaging and intriguing to way overly drawn out. Including a few other side aspects later on in the book, as well. (Hero’s brother, heroine sexual intimacy issues, corporate wrong doings, etc.). Seriously, I kept wondering when the tale was going to finally end. It felt like the author chose not to choose a decisive wrap-up but meandered with the bits and pieces I just mentioned long after I expected to see “The End”…then finally got the job done.
The consequence though was too many facets continued to be inserted which derailed and detracted from what should have been the ultimate objective…a clear, concise HEA. It caused this book to fall from 5 stars by the time it should have ended to a 3 – 3.5 by the actual time it concluded. I guess what I’m trying to say is it became overly l-o-n-g at one point for no reason.
So, up until now I’ve only read the first two in the series. Fortunately, you are able to read any of them without reading the ones before, although like with any other similar series. you will know what couples get together from earlier books, because they are all friends, so of course are all mentioned in each other’s books. So far, I would still say book 2 in the series, Friends Without Benefits, is my favorite. This one was as good as book one though, Neanderthal Seeks Human. In fact, with a kidnapping in this book, it is reminiscent of that first story as well. I really liked a lot about our main characters, Kat and Dan – the security man. Dan seemed like such a sweetheart, and it was so awesome to know that he was just as interested in Kat as she was in him. I loved that he got the wrong idea when she said she wasn’t into monogamy after their night in Vegas, that he assumed she was into polyamory. LOL! That made for some fun at the beginning. But getting to Kat’s real reason for why she said what she did to Dan made for some emotional parts of the story. In a way this made it a little slower for me. Still, I loved the friends and the humor that was in the book. And I look forward to going back and reading more of the books in the series as I get my hands on them. It’s a great series, that I will definitely be recommending!
A marriage of inconvenience should most definitely not be entered into when both parties are harbouring feeling for each other. Staying detached is not easy when the person you have longed for for two years hold your hand, or mauled you when you said I do. That however is not their only hurdle. Her evil cousin causes nothing but trouble, going so far as to enlist another villain we love to hate to aid him in his endeavours to destroy Kat and commit her. Things definitely escalate and they find it hard to find a moment alone. Some sad topics and very real issues are brought up and experienced in their tale and I can say I know more about some of them now than I did before. Hilarious tidbits and one liners are as always present, and I enjoyed every minute of Kat and her Dan .
Dan and Kat finally get together, yay!!! This story is action packed, filled with all the usual suspects, you are hooked from page one.
I’m so glad a friend recommended this author and these books. If you haven’t read the entire Knitting in the City Series yet, you’re missing out. Dan is SO the man in this book! Writing his and Kat’s story last was brilliant!
Loved the characters especially Dan. He was rough around the edges but still a good guy at heart.
A book I wouldn’t be surprised to see end up as my top read for the year
You know how once in while you come across a book that you can’t wait to read, but at the same time, you sort of hate to read because you don’t want it to end? This is one of those books for me. Book 7 of the Knitting in the City series, it could be read as a standalone, but why would you want to? If you haven’t read the previous books in the series, you need to limber up your 1-click finger and go click on one the best rom-com series out there–and click on the related Winston Brother series while you’re at it. Smart and funny without going over the top, one of my all-time favorite series and one I’m sorry to see come to an end. Which is why part of me was sorry to finish this book.
I’m just going to lay this out there: I love Dan. I adore him even more than Cletus which I didn’t think was possible (if you’re not familiar with Cletus, go read Beard Science from the Winston Brothers). In fact, Dan is mine. I don’t typically claim book boyfriends, it’s just never really been my thing, but let me repeat: Dan. Is. Mine. Now that that’s settled….
Kat and Dan have both been a little bit of an enigma in the series (Kat especially); while the outline is there the details have been tantalizingly blank until now (what really DID happen in Vegas, for example ). It’s great to finally get their stories, particularly since I’ve always identified strongly with Kat as the quiet one in the KitC crew. There’s so much more to Kat than we knew; she’s both stronger and more vulnerable and I loved watching her come into her own. In fact, I may have yelled, “Go, Kat!” a few times at my kindle. Dan is smart and sexy, funny and protective, loves his family even when they don’t make it easy for him and is seriously hung up on Kat. The author even manages to make his swearing endearing.
At more than twice the typical book length, this was still a fast, engrossing, can’t-put-down read for me. Marvelous characters (including some nice moments from earlier characters in the series), a suspenseful plot with several turns I didn’t see coming, lots of laughs along with a few tears, plus a nice epilogue quite a few years later all made for a sensational conclusion to the series, and a book I wouldn’t be surprised to see end up as my top read for the year. 5+ stars

“Do you really think it’s a good idea for me to ask the guy I haven’t been able to move past in two years to fake-marry me?”
Finally Dan the security man’s story! It feels like the whole series has been leading up to Kat and Dan’s story – one I’ve eagerly awaiting for while enjoying the Knitting in the City series.
Marriage of Inconvenience has all the quirky, fun and sexy romance you’d expect from the series along with suspense, sweet angst, and Dan’s seriously foul-mouth that is hilariously perfect. All the girls and their guys are back for this story and it’s a wonderful read, but also bittersweet because I just don’t want the series to be over!
Great writing and fantastic epilogue. I hope it’s not truly the end and there will be more knitting adventures in the future!
Great installment in the knitting series. Just bought dating-ish – didn’t realise I had missed one. Enjoy Penny’s work immensely.
The end is always the beginning…
How I love Penny Reid! I first read her Winston Brothers series, I knew this an author I would follow (or stalk, it’s all semantics 🙂 but in a healthy way I swear!!) So when I was lucky enough to read this book in her Knitting in the City series, I knew I had to jump on the chance.
Now, I have to beg forgiveness here, because sadly I had only read 3 of her Knitting books. (Neanderthal Seeks Human, Neanderthal Marries Human and Beauty and the Mustache) So sorry about this and it’s an issue I will remedy in the future!
But the fantastic thing about this book and her other’s is that even though it’s a series, each one can be read as a stand alone! For this I am so grateful for because I didn’t want to feel like I was missing anything when I started reading this book. And I surely did not.
This book is about Kat and Dan (The security man). What a lovely story. Penny writes romantic comedy at it’s finest and she does it with such class and style!
Kat has a past, a craptacular past and she beats herself up about it constantly. She has a great weight on her shoulders and a glorious infatuation with Dan, which because of an unfortunate misunderstanding, believes is one sided. But as I read, I found out, it is not!
Oh Dan, how I wish you were real! What the perfect example of a hero. Yes he was born on the wrong side of the tracks, but thats what makes him all the more enduring!
I floved the humor in this book! I mean the first interaction between Dan and Caleb is fantastically funny. A great sense of humor in a man is a very sexy quality and Dan has it in spades!
Dan and Kat are so swoony together, their interactions are so real, steamy and just wow.
I loved this book, just like I have loved everything else I have read by Penny Reid and I know I will love whatever she writes next! Thank you for your words, your stories and your world Penny!
Lots of fun. With a bit if intelligence
