Murder in Haunted Cornwall
On the eve of World War II, Dr. Benjamin Bones is at war with himself. While most young men are being sent away to fight the Germans, Ben is chosen to serve on English soil. Ordered to move to wild, beautiful Cornwall, he must trade his posh London office and stylish city life for the tiny village of Birdswing, population 1,221 souls. But leaving his home and shelving … and shelving his career ambitions aren’t the only sacrifices facing Ben. His unfaithful wife, Penny, is accompanying him to Cornwall in a last-ditch effort to save their marriage. But moments after their arrival, Penny is run down in the street, and Ben is almost fatally injured. And while the villagers assume Penny’s death to be an accident, Ben quickly deduces it was murder.
As he convalesces in Fenton House, which the locals call haunted, Ben meets Birdswing’s eccentric inhabitants. Mr. Gaston, the volunteer air warden, obsessed with defending his remote village against Nazi spies; Mrs. Cobblepot, a thoroughly practical housekeeper who believes in fairies; and Lady Juliet Linton, a prickly, headstrong aristocrat who won’t take no for an answer. While adapting to life during Britain’s “War at Home,” a time of ration books, victory gardens, bomb shelters, and the Blackout, Ben sets about solving the mystery of Penny’s murder—with a little help from Lady Juliet and the Fenton House ghost.

Really enjoyed the characters and it was a rollicking good mystery.
Excellent characters, interesting inn that it is set during WWII but the war is really background that helps to define the characters and the situation
I simply love these Benjamin Bones books!! They are charming, so British, very evocative of England during WW2 years. They’re extremely amusing, and the characters are delightful. I can only hope that Emma Jameson will write even more books for this lovely series!
Couldn’t wait to start the next book in the series.
Liked the development of the doctor’s character and his emerging acceptance by the provincial English community. Also th growing awareness of her Ladyship, the younger, that she might present a more polished persona within th community.
Very enjoyable series with witty observations on contemporary London.
Good, written during the being of WW2. Lady Juilet was a little had to believe at times as she was not a petite “lady”. I also didn’t get the reasoning for the ghost as she had little to do with the plot.
An interesting murder mystery set during the early days of WWII. I hope the author will be writing more stories for Dr. Bones, Lady Juliette and the people of Birdswing.
Excellent author…others pale by comparison. Intelligent writing relieved by humor and expertly placed happenings. Highly recommend this book. will read others in this series.
I cannot wait to read the next book in the series. I loved the characters and the plot twists.
a quick read with quirky characters… old fashioned British
Too campy; over the top – caricatures; unable to get interested in the characters.
Interesting plot. The story line a bit unpredictable. Kept reading because I couldn’t guess where it was going. Worth the time to read. Funny at times.
Kept you on your toes and trying to solve the puzzle to the very end
Wonderful, fallible characters. Reminds me of Elizabeth Peters books.
Dr. Benjamin Bones no longer loves his wife, recognizing that what he had once felt had been infatuation. But he did not wish her dead. Arriving at dusk in a small village where he was to start his war-assigned practice, both Dr. Bones and his wife were struck by a lorry; he was badly injured, but she was killed. Of course, it turned out to be …

An interesting time period. Early WW11 murder in the English countryside.
Interesting series. It’s more about character development which is quite good than the story per se. I look forward to reading the next one in the series.
This series continues to shine. The characters and situations are very enjoyable.
