Murder in Haunted Cornwall
On the eve of World War II, Dr. Benjamin Bones is at war with himself. While most young men are being sent away to fight the Germans, Ben is chosen to serve on English soil. Ordered to move to wild, beautiful Cornwall, he must trade his posh London office and stylish city life for the tiny village of Birdswing, population 1,221 souls. But leaving his home and shelving … and shelving his career ambitions aren’t the only sacrifices facing Ben. His unfaithful wife, Penny, is accompanying him to Cornwall in a last-ditch effort to save their marriage. But moments after their arrival, Penny is run down in the street, and Ben is almost fatally injured. And while the villagers assume Penny’s death to be an accident, Ben quickly deduces it was murder.
As he convalesces in Fenton House, which the locals call haunted, Ben meets Birdswing’s eccentric inhabitants. Mr. Gaston, the volunteer air warden, obsessed with defending his remote village against Nazi spies; Mrs. Cobblepot, a thoroughly practical housekeeper who believes in fairies; and Lady Juliet Linton, a prickly, headstrong aristocrat who won’t take no for an answer. While adapting to life during Britain’s “War at Home,” a time of ration books, victory gardens, bomb shelters, and the Blackout, Ben sets about solving the mystery of Penny’s murder—with a little help from Lady Juliet and the Fenton House ghost.

The second book with these characters. I found it to be very original with interesting characters. Not predictable at all.
This book was a pleasure to read. The characters, especially Dr. Bones and Lady Juliet, are charmingly imperfect. The setting is interesting and the plot is acceptable. Throw in a spiritual presence and i’m sold. I really felt “cozy” while reading this book and appreciate the lack of violence. I don’t much like “romance” these days, and abhor …
This wasn’t a great book, but it was entertaining and easy to read.
Really enjoyed this one.
Disjointed action
A wee bit predictable
This was a good book, and an interesting look back at WWII England
I loved all the characters! Can’t wait until she writes more Dr. Bones books.
Good. Different from the usual fiction.
some of the characters were laugh-out-loud funny. Enjoyed the humor
Intriguing characters, not the norm, and a good mystery.
Interesting characters, historical fiction and mystery, clever plot
Good read. I especially liked the historical aspect…Britain during the war. Interesting characters. They were realistic and complex. I didn’t love the bit of ghostly involvement, but I did enjoy the plot and writing style a lot.
Fun to read.
I love Emma Jameson’s Lord and Lady Heatheridge series, and I would put the Dr. Benjamin Bones series only slightly below those. I really enjoyed this book and quickly ordered the next available book and short stories. The setting is quite interesting in both time and place. Very entertaining if you aren’t averse to a little magic with your …
I loved the setting and the characters in this book: 1939 Cornwall , England and new friends Dr Benjamin Bones and Lady Juliet Linton. They are quirky and compelling. I read all four novels in the series and am anxiously awaiting more.
Fun read
I enjoyed every moment. The time frame is interesting. World WAR I I made many changes In the Dailey lives of people in Britain.
Pretty good plot, with a little twist. Typical English understated, subtle character interaction. It does make me want to read more, to follow the characters.
Loved this book and want to read more of them
