This is book four of Tess Thompson’s Cliffside Bay series and it centers around the characters Kyle and Violet. From what we know of these two, from previous books, they can’t stand each other. Kyle wants to build hotels and this and that but Violet sees it as him coming in and destroying the town with his big city living ideas. When Kyle gets the surprise of his life and finds out he’s a father of a newborn baby and the mother has passed away during childbirth his world has thrown for a loop. Who better to turn to for help then the local single mom, even if she hates his guts.
So I have a love/hate relationship with this series. Individually, I love the stories. When she brings all the characters together for dialogue and they refer to themselves as the dogs it drives me nuts. I also hate that it seems like a lot of reputation in the books. The same conversation is had between one character and three others all at separate times and that tends to make me start to lose interest but Tess Thompson is no rookie so just when you think you might have to put this book on the back burner she starts dropping plot bombs all over the place and the next thing I know I’ve read the last 50% of the book in one sitting. I also think I’m a little bitter towards romance right now due to some personal aspects of my life so I kinda scoff at love stories and maybe fake gag a little bit. This book did end with a loose end left wide open and I’m curious to see if we get closure on that so I already can’t wait til the next one.
The greatest thing about Tess and her series books is she doesn’t make her readers wait a whole year to get answers. She really throws herself into her work and generally pumps out a book every few months or so.
(4 out of 5 stars)
I received a copy of this book and chose to give an honest review.
I absolutely LOVED Kyle and Violet’s story!!! It has all the feels!!!. Little Dakota just melts my heart. One thing I really like about this series is that, in every book, you get to catch up with all of the characters from previous books. It makes for a very interesting plot. I’m ready to move to Cliffside Bay and befriend all of these characters
What an amazing, breathtaking love story!
Words cannot describe how beautiful this love story is. We know these two, a little bit at least, from the previous Cliffside Bay books, but even then we didn’t really know either of them. Their romance was so unexpectedly sweet, their friendship a soothing balm for their embattled hearts, and the way they fitted their lives together was nothing short of exquisite.
Kyle and Violet are living proof that one’s past doesn’t have to define one’s future, except that it does anyway. Kyle had such a horrible childhood, and he’s worked hard to put miles and miles of distance between his old self and the man he is today. But the hurting heart and insecurities are still there, despite the cocky mask of success he tries to hide behind.
Violet has had two important men in her life, and they both shamefully let her down in the worst of ways. Still, she’s got an inner strength that helps her rise above it all, and she finds her purpose in raising her son and defending the environment.
A drastic change for Kyle forces him to rely on Violet far more than either of them is comfortable with, until their time together starts revealing their hidden layers, giving their hearts something to hope for. All the secrets come out – and they are earth-shattering in their significance – yet none of the secrets changes anything for either of them.
The writing here is exemplary, hitting all the right heart-notes and enveloping the reader with the warmth and abiding friendship that is the foundation of life for the Dogs and their Wags. Each of the books in this series of standalone romances is beautifully written, but Kyle and Violet are my new favorite couple. Their romance is not to be missed. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Filled with pleasant surprises and unexpected turns, this fourth book in the Cliffside Bay series is another winner! I love the way Tess Thompson writes and I thoroughly enjoy these small-town, close-knit community stories – picking this one up felt like returning to visit old friends. “Marred” centers around Kyle and Violet, who are complete opposites (or so it seems on the surface) and long-time opponents. I didn’t expect to like Kyle too much, based on what I read about him in the prior books, but that quickly changed for me as I read this one. And now I think (…I’m pretty certain…) that he is my favorite of the “Dogs”. Of course, a lot of that has to do with how he and Violet interact and grow in this story. It was wonderful! Once again, the other characters’ storylines are continued as well, overall making this an essential and outstanding addition to the series. I am really looking forward to book #5!!
I didn’t expect to read such a beautiful story between Kyle and Violet. There history wasn’t the best. They were archenemies and never saw eye to eye. Until Kyle needed help and surprisingly needed Violet’s help. The other surprise?! That she accepted to help him. They put their differences aside and this developed into a beautiful story.
Kyle had a past that he barely spoke about and when it was revealed it was extremely sad. Who knew that underneath all that hotness was a broken guy. Violet was also struggling but was dealing with it. She helped Kyle with his past and he helped her with her present and future. He showed her how beautiful she is both inside and outside and defended her from her abusive father. They were a team and furthermore they were family and no one was disrespecting her on his watch. And no one was getting in between their relationship on Violet’s watch. They were a force to be reckoned with.
There were some surprises and some moments from their friends that made you standstill but it turned out well. I really wanted more of these two but I can’t wait to read on the one friend that is still single, . These secondary characters are the best.

I have so come to love these characters from this sleepy little town. This series just keeps getting better and better. One of my absolute favorite genres is hate to love/enemies to lovers and Kyle and Violet are a great example of why.
You don’t need to read the other books to fall in love with this one, but if you have you know that Violet has not been able to stand the sight of Kyle pretty much from day one. Her stance in picketing his hotel is cute and comical. But reading her evolution and the understanding of Kyle’s childhood; and his of her background really sets the stage for sweet romance.
These books don’t really have hot and heavy sex, but what they do have is that tear jerker, swoon worthy, Lifetime movie quality that makes you want to read each and everyone. I can’t wait for the next (Review by Terri “Jane”)
Each book in this series of standalone stories seems to get better and better. I’ll be honest and admit that I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy Kyle’s story. He hasn’t been my favorite in the past couple of books, mostly because he just hasn’t been nice. I did like Violet and felt for her, especially as she started to open up more and more. With that in mind I went into this book with an open mind and was completely thrown off and intrigued from chapter 1. We see a side of Kyle that we’ve never seen before and we finally get to learn what made him the man he is today. He’s broken and don’t think he’s repairable. But that all changes, and for the better. We also get a better understanding of Violet and what makes her tick. My heart was with her this whole time and I loved that not only did we get to know her better but we also got to see her finally happy, truly happy. There was only one thing I wasn’t so sure about in this book and that was Mel. She asked to go to the bathroom and she was laid off and she was upset and then she comes strolling back happy as a clam? And then the next day Kyle’s keys are missing? I think we missed something that, or at least I did. I wouldn’t mind a better understanding (no not a Mel book as she was just weird, but a conclusion to her crazy). Either way, I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to Lance’s story.

I absolutely love this series by Tess Thompson, and this book was no different. She weaves magic in every couple she features in her stories/series. I, like my co-blogger/best friend, also like enemies to lovers or hate to love storylines. This whole series can be read as stand alones….but you will be missing out on an amazing series if you don’t read them all, that is just my thought process.
The story between Violet and Kyle is so intense, since they can’t dislike each other anymore? Violet takes some extreme measures with her beliefs and that measure leaves her toe to toe with Kyle. You couldn’t find two different people, with different backgrounds, different current situations, and future aspirations. To see their relationship form from enemies to something completely different is a great transition and makes for a wonderful story. One click please….-Review by Catherine(Catty)
5 STAR Review by Jodi for Ruby Red Romance Review
I love these amazing stories by Tess Thompson. Marred might be one of my favorite so far. I love the Dogs and everything they are. It’s fun catching up with all these amazing characters. Before I start this review, I will say that you have to read these books in order. If you try to pick them up as a standalone, you will miss most of the back story.
Kyle and Violet are great characters. I’m all for a good enemies to lovers story. This is seriously the best. I loved Kyle’s free spirit life. Never one to settle down, Kyle gets a rude awakening when a surprise on his door step. I loved watching this man fall. I also loved learning about why he is the way he is. It explained a lot about him as a person as well as the man he was and is. I love Violet. She wants a better world for her son. One that sometimes she just can’t give him. I hurt for her. Her past is one that broke my heart. But I was great to see her overcome. I loved watching her walls crumble.
There is so much that happens in this story. We get to meet new people. We get to see our old friends. We have a wedding. I loved every second of this book. There were a couple parts that were left open and have me wondering, are we going to have trouble soon, or was it just fluff. I’m hoping it goes somewhere, but you never know. Tess Thompson is an amazing author and had done a fantastic job with this series.
I loved Kyle and Violet’s story in the quiet town of Cliffside Bay. Two individuals carrying their everyday burdens from their torn pasts. They both strive to build a better life but their baggage comes along with them.
I empathized the fact that they struggled with telling each other how they really felt. Was it really love or was it hope for a better life. As I read I felt closer and closer to Kyle and Violet. I liked how the characters from previous books came into their story.
Marred by Tess Thompson was so well written that I felt anger and even at one-point hatred. This quickly turned to laughter and gratitude with such a relieving feeling that they are so perfectly fit for one another. What an amazing read! I can’t wait for the next.
Kyle Hicks may have come from nothing, but now he is a sought after land developer and millionaire. His latest project brings him to Cliffside Bay where he finds himself amidst his best friends from college, known as the Dogs.
Violet Ellis, single mom and failed business owner is struggling. Disowned by her family, all she has left is her son, her pride and the causes she champions. She loves Cliffside Bay and will do anything she can to stop Kyle Hicks from ruining the charm of her beloved town with his new project.
Kyle and Violet didn’t even like each other. They always seemed to be at odds with Kyle’s land developments and Violet’s protests in opposition to him building in Cliffside Bay. But, when fate brings them together at a time they need each other most, they find out they they are not as different as they first thought. will it be enough to allow them to move forward as friends, or even more?
I can honestly say, I have loved each and every book in this series so far and the characters feel more and more like family with every addition to the series!
Kyle’s past is completely heartbreaking. He’s done so much to come from a childhood no one should ever have to experience to become the successful man he is today. But, he’s still damaged. He hides his past and his inner scars with is money and success.
Violet has always been made to feel small and like she wasn’t smart enough to think for herself or make her own decisions. She’s felt like a failure since she was a child. She takes on the world’s causes to make herself be heard and feel important.
Kyle and Violet seem like polar opposites, but really have more in common than they could have imagined. And, both truly want and need a family to make themselves feel whole again. Both are terrified of loving and losing again in their lives, but the sparks keep flying and their slow burn romance is gorgeous as they transform one another and become a family. They are both so strong, and together, they give each other everything they need! Add in two very adorable children, the Dogs and their significant others, a proposal, a wedding and some other surprises, and you’ll be swept away in the slow burn that is Kyle & Violet’s story! 5 stars!
I absolutely loved this book! The 4th book in the Cliffside Bay series with Kyle & Violet is awesome! From its sun, sand and diverse couples all set in a quaint seaside town i I’m sure you’ll enjoy this as much as I did. I’m looking forward to the next installment in the series. Thank you to the author for an advanced readers copy and congratulations on another 5 star book!
A very enjoyable read. With drama and emotional turmoil, this is a gripping read. Kyle and Violet are like two pieces of a puzzle. They fit beautifully together. A very good read. I am posting a voluntary, honest review.
Another great addition to this series! I loved getting Kyle and Violet’s story. Two that were opposites that somehow chance their views when Mollie enters the picture. Both trying to contend with their past and move forward, sometimes you need help. These two are just what the other needs. Cannot wait to the next one!
Marred: Kyle and Violet
Cliffside Bay Series, Book 4
Tess Thompson has done it again. 5 Stars for Marred, Kyle and Violet!
I love reading books from the Cliffside Bay series. Although this is book 4 in the series, you could pick up this book and not read any of the other books in the series, in that way, it is a stand alone book but I highly recommend reading all of the series because the characters in the books get richer and more developed with each new book.
Reading Marred, Kyle and Violet was like coming home, or curling up on a cool day with a cup of tea and a crackling fire. Of course by the end of the book I am already counting the days until the next book in the series is released.
If you like wholesome romance stories, let your mind be captivated and transformed into the lives of Kyle, Violet, baby Molly Blue and little man Dakota in the lovely town of Cliffside Bay. Get lost in the push and pull of life events like the push and pull of waves on the beaches of Cliffside Bay.
Of course you will get updates on The Dogs, and all of the other beloved characters from other books in the series.
Marred is a story you can relate to. Best book by Tess Thompson so far!
No one knew the details of his past they just knew it was bad. Kyle kept up appearances and was the big time play boy but one slip up and his world flipped in ways he never imagined. While his life is changing his past is always a step away. When he realizes he must come clean and let the Dogs know everything so he can get the help he needs, he had no idea the Pandora’s box he was opening. His arch enemy may be the one to not only save his hide but win his heart at the same time. When the shared history of abusive/negligent parents gives them a better understanding of what’s hidden beneath their layers they find they may have more in common than they could conceive.
This author bout broke my heart with these two. Their past their present their pains and challenges. Leaning on each other and allowing their strength to help them through will give them their victory. I love this author’s style and her characters have definitely won my devotion. I can’t wait for more the Dogs and Wags.
Once again Tess Thompson has hit it out of the park! I usually try to read only a couple chapters a day do I can savor it. I found that hard to do with Marred. I just wanted to keep reading. This authors use of words, descriptions, is amazing!
Although this could be read as a stand-alone you’ll want to get to know each of the residents of Cliffside Bay.
Let the water works begin. Another amazing book from the Cliffside Bay Series that I couldnt put down. This book peeled back all of the layers and history in Kyle and Violets personal lives. It brought you to understand who they truly were and why they were such a perfect match together. Watching this group of friends grow closer and larger in this book warmed my heart!
I am absolutely loving this series by Tess!
Follow playboy Kyle’s story, as one night results in a surprise he can’t and won’t ignore! He needs help and has to go to his arch nemesis, Violet for help!
Watch as they navigate their sticky situation, as Violet see’s a different side of Kyle, and he learns more about Violet that explains why she is the way she is!
Beautifully written, like I said I absolutely love this series! 5 stars!
I loved the first book in the Cliffside Bay series and couldn’t wait to read the rest. Marred centers around Kyle and Violet who have never gotten along. Kyle came from a very poor broken family and became very successful in real estate development and Violet is a single mom who is struggling after closing her business. When a situation occurs that forces the two of them to work together they start to see each other differently. This story was heartwarming & I can’t wait for the next book in the series! Thank you for allowing me to read an ARC of the fourth book in the Cliffside Bay Series.
