Violet came from a family who provided for her every financial need but failed her in every other way. Her father was domineering, and her mother complacent. When she became pregnant out of wedlock, they sent her away, unwilling to let her make them look bad in the eyes of their friends and the community. Kyle grew up with a docile, nearly absent father and a mother who abandoned him and his siblings at a young age. His family was so poor that he was forced to go to school in clothes that were several sizes too small and permeated with the stink of the pig farm he lived nearby in a trailer that often had no utilities and no water for showers or baths. Their lives seem completely different, and neither one of them likes the other much, but when Violet’s business fails, and Kyle is surprised by the arrival of an infant daughter he didn’t know he had, the two of them come together in unexpected ways. Perhaps at the core, what each one of them needs and wants isn’t as different as they first believed.
This book has reminded me of all the hardship in the world; how everyone has a past filled with stories―some good and some bad, some we share and some we keep quiet. This thought should have made me sad―and it did―but somehow this author of remarkable stories was able to point this out, and then make me think that perhaps this commonality between us is something that should be celebrated instead of mourned. Ms. Thompson stated it best when she said, “If only we could set aside our metal shields and bare our hearts. Perhaps then the world might solve its problems.”
Without a doubt, Marred is another beautiful book in the touching, heartfelt Cliffside Bay series.
Welcome to Cliffside Bay, a little California town you may visit several times, but you will definitely wish you could stay!! Marred is the fourth book in this series by Tess Thompson, and is as enjoyable as the others. This is primarily the story of Kale and Lettie (read the book to find out how they came to be called those names!), with regular appearances by the other Dogs whom we’ve come to know and love. This series certainly involves romance, but it’s about much more; extremely well developed characters, each with certain shortcomings, trials and tribulations. Each book can be read as a standalone, but it is so much more interesting to read them in order. The characters are developed more in each book, and definitely grow through time and circumstances. Definitely looking forward to more books in this delightful and engrossing series, which I highly recommend reading!
Thank you to Tess Thompson for an ARC of this book. This is my honest opinion of this book.
I loved this book from the first to the very last. I love Kyle. I think he took a very broken childhood and decided that it would be easy to just work and make a huge life and he would never have to think about it anymore. It does not always work that way, but he sure tried. He comes across as a self centered person to some but he’s really a very kind person. He’s just running from demons. His past and his guilt. He has the ability to love someone very deeply.
Violet comes from a family who thinks she has made a mess of her life. It seems no matter what she does she can’t win. She has a son who is her life and she’s raising him alone. She needs a life and love of her own. She needs a family to call her own. She’s hated Kyle for a long time and they don’t get along at all. But somethings happen that are beyond our control. I call it “meant to be”. Some people are just meant to be together no matter what and that is Kyle and Violet. They have gone through a lot and learning to trust each other will be a struggle. But when something lands in Kyle’s lap that he does not expect he turns to Violet for help.
Only she can save him and only he can save her. Together they can heal and have what each deserves so much. Love and family.
One of my favorite things in this book is: “SOMETIMES I THINK THE PERSON WE ALL STARTED OUT TO BE GETS CHIPPED AWAY AND CHIPPED AWAY UNTIL WE’RE LEFT WITH NOTHING BUT THE HARD KERNEL-THE PLACE WHERE WE’RE MERELY SURVIVING ON THE FUMES OF OUR FORMER GLORIOUS SELVES. ALL THAT’S LEFT IS THE SURVIVOR WHO EXISTS WITHOUT REDEMPTION OR GRACE. WE MUST GET THROUGH, WE THINK. JUST ONE MORE DAY. ONE MORE DEAL. ONE MORE DEPOSIT IN THE BANK ACCOUNT. ONE MORE CONQUEST. I’VE LIVED LIKE THAT FOR ALL MY ADULT LIFE. IT’S BEEN A CONSTANT TRUDGE UP THE HILL TO PROVE TO MY SELF THAT I’M NOT SISYPHUS AFTER ALL.” Kyle said that to Violet and I think it was beautiful.
This book is beautiful. Filled with so much love, heartache and happiness. Just enough of each though to touch everyone. Some scenes are so happy, then some are sad and some are just plain hot. Kyle and Violet are my favorite of all the couples in Cliffside Bay. I love this book. The 4th in the series. Well done. A big 5 stars from me.
Great book. Loved it.
My favorite of this series, so far. Two troubled souls come together in the most original way. A heart-warming story full of surprises.
Book #4 in the Cliffside Bay series. This one is all about Kyle and Violet. They are sworn enemies and absolutely cannot tolerate one another. Or can they? They are truly more alike than they know.
Kyle has been running for most of his life from his childhood and the scars it left on him. He feels he isn’t worthy of anyone and that’s why he jumps from one-night stand to one-night stand. Violet is the queen of failures. She excels at them, or so her father tells her. She has stopped trying to measure up. Then, a baby on the doorstep (so to speak) changes everything.
Get ready to return to all of your favorite Cliffside Bay peeps, check-in on them, and find out the latest. In this one, one tiny baby changes everything for Kyle and Violet and how they view one another. Secrets are revealed and hopes and dreams uncovered. This series just keeps getting better and better.
A very intriguing story with many layers.
Great writer.
Love the whole Series!!!
Too often a person will see oneself as undesirable, unlovable. Marred by Tess Thompson lets us see how two people, Kyle and Violet who truly feel that way, survive and move on. Kyle has blamed himself for what happened in the past. Violet has dealt with mental injuries from her insensitive father. Coming together under odd circumstances, they become each other’s best friend. You’ll love this one.

Marred was full of wonderful, realistic characters and was well written. It drew me in from the beginning and kept me turning the page to see what would happen next.
4th in the series. I’ve read and enjoyed the prior 4. You can enter any point in the series, but it will make you want to go see how the earlier ones developed and concluded. This one is very good and it is wonderful to see how they overcome the angst of their pasts.
Loved It
How can opposites find a middle ground. Mollie Blue. Dakota is a single mom that grew up in Cliffside Bay and opened a environmentally friendly business, but it didn’t do so well and has to close. Now her parents are moving back & she will be homeless. She and Kyle haven’t seen eye to eye on things. Kyle was home when he got call to come to the front desk if his business, that’s when he meets his 6 day old daughter. He’s lost, he has ghost from his past he hasn’t dealt with, but will now, with Violet’s help.
A good page turner.
This is a very good book .It kept me on my toes, very inspirational.
It was predictable from the first. I felt it was difficult to keep all his close friends, girlfriends, wives straight. I did finish the book, but not sure why.
MARRED is the story of opposites attract. But, can they find common ground and happiness. Kyle and Violet are thrown together when baby, Molly Blue lands on Kyle’s doorstep. Kyle, is totally over his head when he becomes a single father. The baggage from his childhood haunts Kyle and blocks his way to a happy ever after.
There is a question of missing keys that was not resolved in this book. I have to believe the set of keys will turn up in one of the following books in the series.
I loved this book! Kyles sad upbringing makes him who he is until life throws him a curveball and leaned him needing Violets help. It’s not easy for either of them to trust again as Violet has not had it easy keeping her own secrets and struggling as a single mom. They find themselves finding all they ever needed was each other! A must read! Loved this so much !
Enjoyed reading!!
Good story!!lol
