In the fourth novel in Anne Bishop’s New York Times bestselling series, the Others will need to decide how much humanity they’re willing to tolerate—both within themselves and their community… Since the Others allied themselves with the cassandra sangue, the fragile yet powerful human blood prophets who were being exploited by their own kind, the dynamic between humans and Others has changed. … between humans and Others has changed. Some, such as Simon Wolfgard, wolf shifter and leader of the Lakeside Courtyard, and blood prophet Meg Corbyn see the closer companionship as beneficial.
But not everyone is convinced. A group of radical humans is seeking to usurp land through a series of violent attacks on the Others. What they don’t realize is that there are older and more dangerous forces than shifters and vampires protecting the land—and those forces are willing to do whatever is necessary to safeguard what is theirs…

Bishop builds a frightening world where people are NOT the boss of anything as she highlights the best and worst of human characteristics.
This series is an excellent read for us fans of fantasy. It centers around an unusual premise and set up, making it stand out in its genre. At the same time, the characters have an unusual way of expressing themselves. There is a subtle romantic tension that runs through the stories without taking center stage, but which helps to anchor the stability of the group of characters. It also does a good job of supporting the importance of tolerance for differences and of acknowledging each being’s validity without being preachy about it.
Fans of Ms. Bishops Dark Jewels novels will love her New world. New strong women facing challenges and overcoming them with class, and wonderfully evil villains who come to really twisted but deserving ends.

Thoughts: OMG!! This series just keeps getting better and better. I could NOT put this book down to save my life, which is why I was up until 1AM reading it. I swear if I didn’t have other stuff to read I would be reading all the book again and saying screw it to the world. I don’t know how Ms. Bishop does it but even when there isn’t something exciting going I’m as interested as when there is. I just love the characters! Simon and Meg are so adorable yet both so naive when it comes to relationships. Simon is used to how wolves get mates but knows that he can’t do that with Meg. While Meg has no clue at all and is scared because of her experiences at the compound. But that is only just a tiny piece of the whole story. I can’t wait for the next book!! I’ll probably devour that one as quickly as I did this one.
Very much enjoyed this book – Anne Bishop is an amazing writer.
Love this series
Meh. Her Black Jewels series is far better than this one.
Phenomenal series. I absolutely love very book and every character.
It left me waiting with baited breath for the next installment.
This is a very unique and wonderful series!
Interesting twist on the normal varieties of supernatural creatures. In this world, vampires and werewolves and supernatural creatures own everything and humans are barely tolerated.
Not quite up to speed with the earlier books in the series. The story development has reached a point where it is time to finish the series and move to another idea. I love Anne Bishop’s ideas and stories but sometimes a short series is better than a long one.
Loved it!
Grows on you. interesting premise
A Guilty Pleasure
Great job with world building. Very thought provoking
Fantastic continuation of the series! I love to see the heroine’s identity and sense of self grow. Laugh out loud funny and affectionate parts balance the serious events. So glad to for each new release!
