In the fourth novel in Anne Bishop’s New York Times bestselling series, the Others will need to decide how much humanity they’re willing to tolerate—both within themselves and their community… Since the Others allied themselves with the cassandra sangue, the fragile yet powerful human blood prophets who were being exploited by their own kind, the dynamic between humans and Others has changed. … between humans and Others has changed. Some, such as Simon Wolfgard, wolf shifter and leader of the Lakeside Courtyard, and blood prophet Meg Corbyn see the closer companionship as beneficial.
But not everyone is convinced. A group of radical humans is seeking to usurp land through a series of violent attacks on the Others. What they don’t realize is that there are older and more dangerous forces than shifters and vampires protecting the land—and those forces are willing to do whatever is necessary to safeguard what is theirs…

There are a few authors who make we want to stay up all night (or at least past my bedtime) in order to finish their book – Mary Higgins Clark is a guilty pleasure. But any book in The Others series keeps me riveted. The characters are people I care about, the situations are tense and I have to read “just one more page” in order to see how they turn out. The only bad thing is that after I’ve read past my bedtime to finish the book, it’s done and I have to wait another year for the next one. March 2017 can’t get here fast enough.
4 ½
I think this was my favorite in the series so far…..
There are so many things happening in the book I don’t even know where to start. This book like previous books is pretty fast paced and pretty much gripes you from page one.
Well the humans are still stupid and think they can take…. The others….. and they are moving forward with their plan to take over for them and ruling the planet .
The Others on the other hand know things will come to blow. But over the course of several books they almost became friends with some humans and they would feel bad if they would not survive. So now they are trying to save their friends.
All the while they are still helping the cassandra sangue to settle and learn to live a normal life. Of course nothing is ever that easy. Meg and some others also trying to find a way to help them without having to cut.
Meg really came through in this book. I thought. In this book more than any others she really learned and she really tried to stand on her own two feet. More than that she stood up for herself. There were a few time in the beginning where I rolled my eyes at her for taking the easy route but overall she really came out of it on top and with more confidence.
Simon also grew so much not only in this book but throughout. It is amazing how much the “clever meat” grew on him and how far he is willing to go to safe some of his friends or as he calls them the human pack. But it is clear that he cares for them.
Just as it is still crystal clear how he feels about Meg.
Tess, is Tess and I still love her , more than ever now that most of everyone know what and who she is.
Vlad is still busy helping with the humans but also with some other Vampires that are coming in and around town and other to. I’m curious to see how that that plays out
Most of the book the others and other settlement are busy prepping for a big “storm” that is about to hit. I have to say that was my least favorite part of the book, I thought it be bigger and actually thought it was a bit anti climatic and went by way to fast.
The Aftermath was still pretty big and we shall see how it continues, but just the part of the ‘Storm” itself was a bit of letdown.
I thought there were other ‘battles’ in the book that were much bigger and better in a cruel way.
Overall, I really loved this book and can’t wait to start the next. The end with Simon and Meg gave me hope for their relationship…… it’s only taking four books lol.
I own the paperback but I listened to this on audio from the library and I must say the narration was fantastic.
I rate it 4 ½
Always something new. A page turner. Love this series!
This is my favorite series ever. I own 2 full sets of it and take the books with me when I travel. Anne is a great writer and a gifted world building. Start with Written in Red. Timeless, shifters, suspense, a mixed community – what else would any reader want?
I honestly didn’t think that Anne Bishop could top her Jewels series but then she came out with this series and blew me away! At this point I’m convinced that Bishop’s grocery list could be a best seller! (Prove me wrong!)
Well that was an adventure. There was a ton of tension which kept me engaged and turning the page. But that also stressed me out. There are so many characters and I care about so many of them, but they can’t all make it out of the series alive right? And the sexual tension went up a lot. At this point if there isn’t some kind of resolution between Simon and Meg I’m going to be pissed.
I have no idea where this is going in the next book. I’m pretty sure I say that every time and it’s good that Ms. Bishop is keeping me on my toes. And my understanding is that the last one in the series/following these characters. I’m not sure I’m ready for this series to end.
The storm is building between the HFL and the earth natives and Meg is continuing to try to figure out how to help the other girls. I like that all of the secondary characters are just as important as Simon and Meg. Joe breaks my heart . The ending of this book is the sweetest yet!
Love this series
Marked in Flesh is the phenomenal fourth book in The Others series by Anne Bishop. The Others and humans have been living side by side for centuries, but now the humans are overstepping their mark and they are now going to have to deal with the wrath of the Elder’s and it seems that no-one will escape.
I really loved everything about this book. Not only do we see Meg ‘the Cassandra Sangue’ growing, we see her developing her skills as a prophet and what that means not only for the others or humanity, but also for the other girls who have similar gifts to her. We also see the Others in their basic form as the ask the questions ‘How much human do we keep?’ which seems to be the central theme for this whole book as the Others go to war against the Human First League who at the beginning of the book seem to have no fear when it comes to the Others. Let’s just say that by the end of the book, their opinion certainly changes.
The book deals with a lot of conflict and lives are lost along the way. There are some really emotional moments in the books, especially if you have been following the series and have watched how things have come to a head. As well as dealing with displacement of people, disaster and families’ being torn apart, we also see the hope that the Courtyard has when it comes to survival.
As with all the books in this series, there are a host of characters who we are following as they prepare for either their survival or demise. We certainly get a lot more from the Sanguinati in this book as well as more of an introduction to the Elder’s and what their role is as Namid’s teeth and claws. The ending of the book has definitely left me intrigued to see where Simon and Meg’s relationship is going to go next and I can’t wait to read it.
If you love full on descriptive, urban fantasy books with tons of twist and turns, then Anne Bishop is a writer for you. I can’t recommend this series enough!

This series is my favorite. Love Anne Bishop*
Marked in Flesh reminded me of an older sibling who might have life figured out and you think is super cool.
It’s that older sibling who knows things, but not everything.
In Marked in Flesh The Others series is getting serious, more adult, less growl, more bite.
BUT, Simon our lead wolf is getting fluffier. I won’t tell you how that’s a spoiler.
Onward to book 5 Etched in Bone…the last (SOB) book in this fantastic fantasy series.
I loved the overall story. I must remind the reader, this a YA book. In saying that, the whole series was very good and kept my interest
Love all the books in this series
Such a fabulously gritty paranormal urban fantasy. The world created by this author remains as solid as first described in “Written in Red”, the characters have grown in their complexity from volume to volume and the problems have expanded from affecting their city to their world. I am fascinated by how the author has depicted this world where the monsters of our myths and legends are horrendously awesomely bloodily real and how she depicts the interaction of these monsters with humans both at the local community level and at the global level. Unfortunately, the way that humans as a group tend to shortsightedly inspire others to homicidal violence also rings true. Fortunately, the human race as set out in this novel manages to avoid total extermination – even if it does not feel that way.
This series is one of my more Recent must haves.
This was my least favorite of the series. I read this one a couple years ago, and then re-read it recently, and it was definitely better the second go-around than the first, but it was still too slow-moving compared to the others. I really enjoy reading about the interactions between the humans and the Others, and I adore how much they dote on the heroine. The chemistry between her and the hero is fantastic.
This series is slow-burning, and there are definitely times when it could have been trimmed down to move faster, but I really enjoyed it. It’s not deep or though-provoking, but it’s full of pure entertainment, which is exactly what I needed.
CONTENT WARNING: There’s a handful of f-bombs, so if that bothers you, this probably isn’t the book for you.
Love this series
I love this world and eagerly wait for the next one!
Original story holds your interest. Has mystery, adventure and a romance and acrion. These are books you want to read straight through and you don’t want to be interrupted.
I’m not good with reviews but if you like different and great characters, read these!
Anne Bishop always pleases!
I love this series. I have read all of the books in the series three times so far. I am hopeful that the writer continues this series. Very original and the characters are special.
