It’s her chance to make a difference and make up for horrible past mistakes…despite the fact that its battle-hardened commander never wanted her on his team.
When Hell Squad is tasked with destroying a strategic alien facility, Elle knows they need her skills in the field. But first she must go head to head with Marcus Steele and convince him she won’t be a liability.
Marcus Steele is a warrior through and through. He fights to protect the innocent and give the human race a chance to survive. And that includes the beautiful, gutsy Elle who twists him up inside with a single look. The last thing he wants is to take her into a warzone, but soon they are thrown together battling both the alien invaders and their overwhelming attraction. And Marcus will learn just how much he’ll sacrifice to keep her safe.
Note to readers: This post apocalyptic sci fi romance contains a lot of action (think invading aliens, explosions and gunfights), tough warriors (the sexy, battle-hardened soldiers of Hell Squad) and a steamy romance (lots of sexy times between a gutsy survivor and a tough, scarred warrior). So if you like it fast, and gritty, and sexy, this is for you!

About Anna: I’m passionate about all things action romance. I love stories that combine the thrill of falling in love with the excitement of action, danger and adventure. I write about people overcoming unbeatable odds and achieving seemingly impossible goals. I like to believe it’s possible for all of us to do the same.

Marcus is book one in the Hell Squad series by Anna Hackett.
This was a great start to the series. I wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy this title, because I’m not a big fan of the post-apocalypse world, but I soon found myself engaged and entertained.
The world was invaded by dinosaur-like Aliens and not the friendly type. These aliens almost killed off humanity and now what is left are banding together and trying to find a way to end the invaders. It’s war. Humanity’s last chance.
Marcus is the leader of Hell Squad. He’s ruff, tough, and scared on the inside and out.
Ellie was a society girl. She was sheltered, sweet, and innocent until the invasion. Now she’s running communications for Hell Squad.
I liked the introduction to everyone on Hell Squad. Hell Squad is a crazy bunch of people. They take on the most extreme missions. All are hardened warriors/soldiers. I liked the believable dialogue and loved the teasing and banter amongst Hell Squad.
Ellie and Marcus dance around each other, but after a mission that she goes on with Hell Squad, Marcus took action. I liked that we got both Ellie and Marcus’s POV’s. It was fun reading the tough Marcus and seeing his feelings about Ellie. At times his thoughts and words were almost poetic. I also enjoyed the sex scenes. They were well written, placed well, and added to the story.
I also liked that we got some chapters in Gabe’s POV to help us see into him and get ready for his book.
Hackett is a wonderful writer and storyteller. Her characters and world are believable and make me just fall in the story from beginning to end. I can’t wait to read on.
Rated: 4 Stars
The kick-off to the Hell Squad books, Marcus and Elle are a great way to be introduced to this post alien invasion world. I love this series and all the members of Hell Squad (plus the Berserkers)! If you love SFR and lots of action, you’ll love this series!
In the aftermath of a deadly alien invasion, a group of survivors fight to win the planet back. Elle Milton, once a socialite, has made a new role for herself as communications officer for toughest teams fighting for survival – Hell Squad. Marcus Steele is a protector. He fights to give the human race a chance to survive, which includes Elle, the one woman who he can’t stop thinking about.
“When you’re with someone, you’re supposed to lean on them. Share how you feel. In the good times and the bad.”
I loved Elle and Marcus. Elle was a socialite who conformed to her family’s expectations instead of being herself. Now she has a chance to save lives and be a better person. I love how strong she is even though she is terrified. She puts her life on the line to fight with Hell Squad and take down the aliens’ communication tower. She is beautiful, sweet, but tough as steel.
“You’re a protector, Marcus. Anyone—man, woman or child—knows that the instant they see you.”
Marus is a protective alpha male. He is scared on the inside and out. He fights his attraction to Elle for months but he can’t ignore it after their mission together. He is such a badass but can also be very caring and kind, especially to Elle. Whenever Elle doubted herself, Marcus was there to remind her of what she has achieved and that everyone changes. That we can’t hold on to the past, just grow from it.
“We can’t erase the past, and frankly, you shouldn’t want to. It’s brought you to this point. It helped make you who you are today.”
Marcus and Elle were everything I want in a hero and heroine. I adored them and couldn’t get enough of their story. The other members of Hell Squad were fascinating and unique as well. I cannot wait to dive back into their stories and watch them fall in love again.
“You’re mine now. I’m not letting you go.” “Good, because I’m going to hold on to you too. Whatever happens, whatever we come up against.”
Hackett does an amazing job with creating unique and fascinating worlds that you get absorbed into and don’t want to leave. The aliens were so unique, creepy, and deadly that they will stick with you. I cannot get enough of this series, which is why I have read it so many times, and I cannot wait to read the rest.
“For now, we just have to find whatever light we can, hold on to it, and use it to guide us until the sun comes up.”
This is the best series and I fell in love with Anna Hackett’s writing and all of her wonderful characters. From Marcus to Tane, every book gets more exciting and by the time I hit #20, I cried, dragged it out and didn’t want it to end. Bravo, Anna! You have a fan for life!
Anna Hackett has created a postapocolyptic world for readers to explore with wonderful, entertaining characters. Hell Squad is badass and I’m looking forward to reading more!
This is the first in a great series! When I read this one I was lucky as there were a number already out in the series. Now that I am all caught up I eagerly watch for a release of the next one. Anna Hackett also has a number of other series, i.e. Treasure Hunters, that are well worth reading.
This is the first book I read by Ms. Hackett and it wasn’t the last.
I have this whole series and more.
I Highly Recommend that you get this one to find out what a great writer she is.
This was a great start to a new series. I really love this genre even though it’s hard to find good books in it some times. This had everything a great post apocalypse book should have: non stop action, badass fighting, evil aliens, suspense and HOT SEX! Can’t wait to jump into the next book.
This is a deceptively short story. But it packs a mighty wallop!!!
There are sexy alpha-male soldiers, who are at home with having females on their team, who are just as kick ass as them, if not more. Sci-fi thriller meets romance in a tightly woven package.
Set in futuristic Australia after an invasion of reptilian aliens has blasted most life from the planet. A team of special ops soldiers, civilians and techs band together to rid the planet the best they can of the invaders.
Elle, a former party girl, is now the Hell Squad comms officer, and she is damn good at her job. She has a bit of a crush on Marcus, the squad leader and wants to show that she is no longer that shallow, vapid girl she once was made to be.
Marcus and Elle have been denying their feelings for one another. There are sexy scenes but not in depth and mostly happen off camera as it were. I highly recommend this novel especially if you’re into sci-fi romance.
I can’t wait for the next book
I’m a huge fan of this genre and Ms. Hackett does a great job with it. The story is well written and moves along at a quick pace The characters are well developed, making the reader care about what happens to them (as with any book I read, if I don’t like the character, I generally don’t care for the book). I would recommend this series to anyone who is a fan of action syfy with some romance thrown in for extra spice
