Sometimes the truth can be a sticky thing…
Nicole Fitzhenry-Dawes feels like the only failure amid a family of high achievers. Her boyfriend turned out to be married, and her career as a defense attorney is in tatters. When she inherits her uncle’s maple syrup farm, she thinks it’s time for a change—one that keeps her far away from bad guys.
For half a day at least.
Her uncle’s suicide wasn’t a suicide at all. And as Nicole closes in on his killer, she not only risks becoming the murderer’s next victim, but also starts to wonder if knowing the truth is ever worse than believing the lie…
BUSHWHACKED – BOOK 2
Sometimes the most beautiful places hide the darkest secrets…
What former lawyer Nicole Fitzhenry-Dawes wants is to peacefully run her maple syrup farm. What she gets is a body run over by her car. It turns out to be the manager of the local animal shelter, and his death wasn’t the accident it at first seems.
With a little finagling, Nicole convinces the interim police chief to allow her to help with the case, even though she’s also busy trying to settle in to her new role as owner of Sugarwood and figure out her unusual friendship with the county medical examiner.
As Nicole closes in on being able to put the killer behind bars, will she manage to find the evidence she needs before the murderer puts her in a cage—or a body bag—instead?
ALMOST SLEIGHED – BOOK 3
The truth always comes with a price…
Former lawyer Nicole Fitzhenry-Dawes has finally settled in to her new home in Fair Haven, and her first maple syrup season is upon them. It’s not going as smoothly as she’d hoped.
Their sap lines keep springing leaks, and as if that wasn’t enough, Nicole finds their groom-mechanic, Noah, apparently trampled in one of the horse stalls.
Fair Haven’s interim police chief is ready to declare it an accident, but Nicole believes otherwise. With Noah in a coma, she’s determined to figure out who wanted to kill him before the perpetrator can return and finish the job.
But whoever attempted to kill Noah has other ideas and is willing to do whatever it takes to stop Nicole from discovering the truth—even destroy Sugarwood and the man Nicole loves.
These books are “clean” reads and contain no swearing, gore, or steamy bedroom scenes. While the series is best enjoyed in order, each book is a complete mystery on its own.

I loved, loved, loved these three books. After reading them I immediately bought the rest of the books in the series (even though they weren’t on sales). I read quite a few cozy mysteries, but these are really special.
Great development of the main character and her interaction with the townsfolk of Fair Haven. Set in a maple syrup town and farm that is kinda quirky especially for someone from New Zealand.
Fun to read and you grow to love the characters.
I enjoyed these books but I was really pestered by the character of teeny> I found her unnecessary and an interruption to the flow of the stories.
A light fun read.
Light reading and somewhat predictable, but easy reading.
Such an enjoyable series! Easy to read, interesting story lines. Devour it like a box of chocolates!
I enjoy reading books in a series in order to really get to know the characters. I bought all six of the Maple Syrup Mysteries because they are enjoyable, there are plot twists, and the characters are mostly every day people who find themselves juggling personal and professional lives, just like most of us. I also learned that maple syrup is produced in MI; I only was familiar with VT maple syrup. The recipes at the end of each chapter were interesting, and I actually made one, to my husband’s delight. I also read the pre-equal and can’t wait for more Emily James books.
Having read all the available books in the Maple Syrup Mysteries, I am patiently waiting to see how the overall story resolves. The serious got me through some harsh winter weather.
did not really care for this book series
I enjoyed these stories. Good character and it kept me wanting to read more.
Love this series. I look forward to every book that comes out. It is fascinating to see the characters evolve and grow.
Fast moving and fun
Love this series!!! Couldn’t put the books down. Found myself staying up late just to find out what was next. Plan to buy the next set in the series.
I dragged myself through the 3 book set (discount price on Amazon), it’s not very good. The premise is standard: big city 30 year old has a relative murdered in a small town and moves there to take over the business. Unfortunately, Nikki is emotionally immature and not very bright for a 30 year old lawyer. Had those character traits been spread out over the supporting cast it would have been cute. Her one claimed skill is being able to read people, yet unless she states “I am now going to read someone”, she is oblivious to the attitudes of people around her. She handles her romantic interest with the skill of a 16 year old. Maybe I’m just to old to see those traits as endearing rather than irritating. The idea of inheriting a maple syrup farm is great, the lead character is not very likeable. I won’t be reading more of this series.
I really enjoyed them – enough I’ll find more at the library!
A pleasant read. Nicole inherits a maple syrup business from her Uncle Stan. Disillusioned with being a lawyer who can’t really be cutthroat when she needs to, Nicole decides to take over the operation of the business rather than selling it. Of course, a murder soon is discovered, and Nicole tries to squelch her romantic response to the married county coroner.
Suspenseful, well written.
I love reading series books. It’s fun to get the know the characters better instead of something new each time.
Very enjoyable cozy.
